Performance of an electro-hydraulic active steering system

Fischer, Eric, Sitte, André, Weber, Jürgen, Bergmann, Erhard, de la Motte, Markus January 2016 (has links)
Hydrostatic steering systems are used in construction and agricultural machines alike. Because of their high power density, hydraulic drives are qualified for the use in vehicles with high steering loads. Conventional hydrostatic steering systems are limited in terms of steering comfort and driver assistance. For realisation of appropriate steering functions, electro-hydraulic solutions are necessary. This paper provides an overview on existing implementations and introduces a novel steering system. The presented active steering system with independent meter-in and meter-out valves fills the gap between existing active steering systems and steer-by-wire solutions. An appropriate control and safety concept provides advanced steering functions for on-road usage without the fully redundant structure of steer-by-wire systems.

Wheel movement during braking

Klaps, J., Day, Andrew J. January 2002 (has links)
Yes / An experimental study of wheel movement arising from compliance in the front suspension and steering system of a passenger car during braking is presented. Using a Kinematic and Compliance (K&C) test rig, movement of the front wheels and the suspension sub-frame, together with corresponding changes in suspension / steering geometry under simulated braking conditions, were measured and compared with dynamic measurements of the centre points of the front wheels. The resulting knowledge of front wheel deflections has enabled the causes and effects of steering drift during braking to be better understood in the design of front suspension systems for vehicle stability.

Steering System Modelling for Heavy Duty Vehicles

Sjölund, Rickard, Vedin, Nicklas January 2015 (has links)
Future heavy duty vehicles will be designed and manufactured with improved Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, ADAS. When developing ADAS, an accurate model of the vehicle dynamics greatly simplifies the development process. One element integral to the vehicle lateral dynamics and development of ADAS is the steering system. This thesis aims to develop an accurate model of a heavy duty vehicle steering system suitable for simulations. The input to the system is an input torque at the steering wheel and the output is the wheel angle. Physical models of the system components are developed using bond graphs and known relations. Some components are modelled with non-linear inefficiencies and friction of different complexity. Unknown parameters and functions are identified from measurement data using system identification tools such as, for example, linear regression and non-linear grid search. The different subsystems are identified separately to the extent deemed possible. Different model designs are considered, validated, and compared. The advantages and disadvantages of different model choices are discussed. Finally, a non-linear state space model is selected for its high accuracy and efficiency. As this final model can be used to simulate a heavy duty vehicle steering system on a desktop computer faster than real time, it fulfills its purpose.

Energy-efficient steering systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles

Winkler, Torsten, de Zaaijer, Rik, Schwab, Christian January 2016 (has links)
Besides the braking system the steering system is one of the most important systems on vehicles. The reliability and the performance of a steering system decides on the controllability of the vehicle under normal conditions as well as emergency situations. In everyday use the characteristics, the connectivity to assistance systems and the energy efficiency of the steering system become more and more important to fulfill the increasing demands regarding fuel consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and comfort. To meet these demands, new steering systems must be implemented and new technologies have to be developed. This contribution compares different approaches regarding functionality and energy efficiency to give an indication which system is the most promising solution for future front axle steering systems as well as rear steered axles (tag- or pusher axle) on trucks.

Improvement of Steering Performance of a Two-axle Railway Vehicle via Look-up Tables Estimation / Förbättring av styregenskaper hos två-axligt järnvägsfordon via uppslagstabellsuppskattningar

Damsongsaeng, Prapanpong January 2020 (has links)
A conceptual design of an innovative two-axle lightweight railway vehicle for commuter services is carried out at KTH Railway Group. An active wheelset steering is introduced to improve the curving performance of the vehicle, which is one of the critical performance requirements. This thesis aims to improve the steering performance of the active wheelset steering. Look-up tables for estimating time-varying wheel-rail contact parameters are introduced to supervise a simple PID controller of the active steering system in order to improve steering performance. The look-up table (LUT) estimation is focused on time-varying wheel-rail contact parameters, including creep coefficients and contact patch variables due to their direct influence on curving performance and lateral stability of the wheelset. As a result, the estimated longitudinal unit creep forces (UCF) have the potential to supervise the gains determination of PID controller because it can appropriately distinguish running conditions. The estimation of longitudinal UCF is achieved by the combination of the results from the LUT of creep coefficients and the LUT of contact patch variables. The result from longitudinal unit creep force estimation is shifted to the first quadrant to use as critical gain in the Ziegler-Nichols tuning method for the PID controller. The critical oscillation period for PID tuning can be expressed as a function of vehicle speed. Consequently, the PID controller for the active steering system uses time-varying gains with real-time tuning. The proposed control system for active wheelset steering is validated with nine running conditions using SIMPACK and MATLAB/Simulink co-simulation. The proposed control system provides a stable wheelset lateral displacement control regardless of the running condition. The active steering system significantly reduces wheel-rail wear, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed active steering system.
