The development and field testing of an instrument to measure middle school counselors' knowledge of stepchildren

Megivern, Monica M. January 1990 (has links)
School counselors are in a position to receive referrals concerning children's reactions to changing family structures and to help a stepchild adjust to stepfamily living. This study assessed the need for training and education of Virginia middle school counselors regarding their knowledge about counseling stepchildren. This was done by measuring their level of knowledge through the development and use of the instrument, Knowledge and Skills for Counseling Stepchildren: A Self Assessment (KSCS). The focus of this study was the development and refinement of the KSCS. The purpose of the instrument was to assess the training needs of middle school counselors' knowledge about counseling stepchildren. The development of the KSCS took place through conducting item analyses on two pilot studies. Results of the study established a profile of middle school counselors past preparation, current strengths and deficiencies, and the need for training in the area of counseling stepchildren. The majority of counselors had done no prior reading or taken any coursework on the counseling of stepchildren. Test scores on the KSCS were negatively skewed, reflecting a low level of knowledge and identifying a need for training and education in this area. The majority of counselors came from schools where enrollment was 501 to 1,000 and 30% of their caseloads were stepchildren. Counselors from schools where enrollment was 0 to 500 and over 1,000 had caseloads where stepchildren also represented one-third of the students counseled, indicating a consistently high population of stepchildren. The majority of counselors offered no psychological or educational counseling program specifically for stepchildren. Six counselors offered a program specifically for stepchildren and 15 offered time-limited groups for children with separated or divorced parents that addressed issues pertinent to stepfamily living. Recommendations include revisions to the KSCS and required coursework on the counseling of stepchildren for state certification of school counselors. / Ed. D.

Family cohesion in remarried families

Smith, Thomas Alton January 1985 (has links)
A random sample of sixty-eight remarried families was studied by use of FACES III, a widely accepted measure of family cohesion. The purpose of the study was to examine family cohesion in remarried families. Specifically, family cohesion in remarried families was compared with cohesion in a norm group of intact families, as well as investigated in light of the effects of specific variables associated with remarried families. The results indicated that stepparents and natural parents' perceptions of cohesion did not differ significantly. The results confirmed that cohesion levels of remarried families with adolescents were lower than the cohesion levels of other remarried families in this study. Remarried families with adolescents also were found to have significantly lower levels of cohesion than other intact families with adolescents. Cohesion levels of remarried families in other life cycle stages were not found to differ significantly from cohesion levels of other intact families. Complexity of remarried family structure and years in the remarried family did not significantly affect the perceived cohesion levels. / Ph. D. / incomplete_metadata

The experiences of stepmothers of non-residential stepchildren

Hutton, Karmen 09 1900 (has links)
This study explored the experiences of stepmothers of non-residential stepchildren, using a phenomenological approach and qualitative exploratory design. Participants were recruited in the Gauteng area through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the information. The findings of this study indicate the following: the participants, in their role as stepmothers of non-residential stepchildren, experienced various challenges that were very stressful, especially during the early stages of stepfamily formation. The lack of acknowledgement of the stepmothers’ dedication to their stepchildren, as well as conflicting rules concerning how to care for the children, caused distress for the participants. Support from their partners, as well as improved stepfamily relationships over time, were acknowledged as contributing factors to the participants’ continued commitment to their stepfamilies. Further research on stepmothers of non-residential stepchildren is recommended / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Riglyne vir die begeleiding van kinders in hersaamgestelde gesinne

14 October 2015 (has links)
M.Ed. / The reconstructed family is not a new phenomenon. In the past it occurred when a spouse died but nowadays it can be largely be attributed to divorce or the marriage of an unwedded mother. The result is that more children grow up in reconstructed families. Hardly any research has been done and little information is available about the child's involvement in such a family ...

O pai/padrasto em famílias recompostas / The father/stepfather in stepfamilies

Martins, Tiago 21 June 2018 (has links)
Recent changes in the composition of Brazilian families were the result of, amongst other factors, the growing number of separations and divorces, the massive entry of women into the market, scientific and technological innovations, like the effective methods of contraception and assisted reproduction as well as measures in the health area that have increased the life expectancy of the population. All these changes contributed to the redefinition of the feminine condition, the gender relations between men and women, and the forms of exercise of motherhood and fatherhood. As a result of these transformations, there was an increase in the number of reconstituted families made up of couples living in second marriage and whose organization is quite complex, especially regarded to relations with children from the first marriage of the spouses. In some recomposed families, a man is the father of previous children, stepfather of the children of the current partner and with whom he may also have children. The objective of this research is to investigate the exercise of fatherhood and conjugal relationships in families who are composed of second union of partners who have children from previous marriage(s) and eventually from second marriage to analyze how men, who are fathers and stepfathers, experience the relationship of fatherhood with children, considering that the one(s) from the first union lives with the ex-wife, and what ties they have as a stepfather of the children of the current companion. Seven men who are fathers and stepfathers and living in second union were interviewed. Data were collected with the father/stepfather through interviews with semi-structured script, recorded and transcribed in its integrity, and analyzed according to the theoretical approaches of anthropology and psychology. The results indicated a flexibilization of the domestic tasks and children caring, changes in the experiences and the exercise of paternity, movement of the stepfathers towards a good relation with the stepchildren, maintenance of the relationship with the consanguineous children.

Riglyne vir die begeleiding van ouers in hersamegestelde gesinne

Coleman, Susan 10 February 2014 (has links)
M. Ed. (Educational Psychology) / In the author's daily handling of clients at the Institute for Child and Adult Guidance at the Rand Afrikaans University she came to the startling realization of just how many children are' either going through or have already gone through the trauma of their parents' divorce and the reconstitution of the family unit after their parent's remarriage. The author believes that there are unique problems facing today's child in the reconstituted family; so unique in fact, that it may be viable to develop a parental guidance program specifically for the reconstituted family. To ascertain whether a parental guidance program specifically for the reconstituted family is really necessary and desirable, an attempt is made to provide positive and qualitative answers to questions such as: Do normal families really differ from reconstituted families? If so, how and to what extent? Are there major differences in the typical problems facing the parents of the two types of family? Are there major differences between the two family types in "the way children perceive their parents?' The author, therefore, endeavors to identify problem areas in the reconstituted family by first of all studying available literature in an attempt to define a normal family; a reconstituted family; the functioning of a normal family; relationships in the reconstituted family and possible problems that may surface. In an empirical study three practical case studies handled at the Institute of Child and Adult Guidance are studied and an attempt is made to isolate those problems that are unique to' the reconstituted family...
