This investigation describes a beam finite element with crack in central region, for the numerical analysis of the dynamic behavior for any crack length. The element simulates the dynamic behavior of a rectangular section beam with three degree of freedom per node and includes the shear effects and plastic zone at crack tip. The model was implemented in MATLAB environment and it was validated comparing the numerical simulations with results available in the literature. The simulated results are also compared with an experiment performed with rectangular section beams containing different crack length. A modal experimental analysis was performed and it was obtained the experimental modal data, which was compared with values from numeric simulation. The results obtained shown a good agreement between the numeric and experimental model results, which contributes to progress of structural failure prediction due the presence of cracks / Mestrado / Mecanica dos Solidos / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica
