Knowledge Worker Behavioral Responses and Job Outcomes in Mandatory Enterprise System Use Contexts

Hornyak, Robert 11 April 2012 (has links)
The three essays that comprise my dissertation are drawn from a longitudinal field study of the work process innovation of sourcing professionals at a large multinational paper products and related chemicals manufacturing firm. The focus of this study is an examination of how characteristics of the work process innovation context impact enterprise system (ES) acceptance, rich ES use behavior and the resulting individual-level job outcomes realized by knowledge workers in a strategic business process. The ES, an enterprise sourcing application, was introduced to innovate the work processes of employees who perform the sourcing business process. Over a period of 12 months, we collected survey data at four points in time (pre-implementation, immediately following training on the new system; following six months of use; and, following 12 months of use) to trace the innovation process as it unfolded. The three essays that comprise my dissertation focus on three key gaps in understanding and make three corresponding key contributions. The first research essay focuses on the transition from an emphasis on behavioral intention to mental acceptance in mandatory use environments. This essay contributes to the technology acceptance literature by finding that work process characteristics and implementation characteristics are exogenous to beliefs about the technology and that these beliefs are important to understanding mental acceptance as well in mandatory use contexts. The second and third research essays emphasize the transition from lean use concepts to conceptualizing, defining and measuring rich use behaviors and show that use must be captured and elaborated on in context. This is pursued through the development of two rich use constructs reflective of the sourcing work context and the complementary finding of countervailing factors in the work process that may impede the positive impact of rich use behaviors on job benefits.

A Study on Synergies of Balanced Scorecard Applied Between Corporate Headquarter and Strategic Business Units --- with C Telecom Company as an Example

Lin, I-Sheng 26 August 2008 (has links)
In the era of knowledge-based economy, the competition models in information service and telecom industries have been affected by rivals across the countries, evolutions of cutting-edge technologies and new business models. The competition advantages of traditional cross-industry large firms depend on the capability of vertical or horizontal integrations. The joint operational movements have become one of the core competences of enterprise. The large firm which has several strategic business units (SBUs) often faces complications of beneficial conflicts between its SBUs. In addition, cooperative achievement which should be produced by deploying balanced scorecard (BSC) could be affected due to poor communication and evaluation between headquarter (HQ) and the SBUs. By choosing the C telecom company as a case study, this thesis explores how BSC and strategy map which are deployed inside this company affect HQ and SBUs in operational aspect. By interviewing the senior managers from HQ and SBUs of the C telecom company, we can actually access the status of implementing BSC and the synergies between HQ and SBUs in this firm. Moreover, with Goold & Campbell (1998) as the theory basis, we analyze how BSC affects synergies by reviewing the signs of six synergy types. We found in this thesis that BSC in the C telecom company apparently have created significant effects in three synergy types, such as ¡§shared know-how¡¨, ¡§shared tangible resources¡¨ and ¡§combined business creation¡¨. However, only partial or none of effects have appeared in other synergy types, including ¡§coordinated strategies¡¨, ¡§vertical integration¡¨ and ¡§combined business creation¡¨. In order to produce more significant effects of synergies, we provide the following suggestions to C telecom company while functioning BSC. 1. Reinforce the integration of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). 2. Maintain the autonomy of SBUs. 3. Enhance the coordination and intervention competences of HQ. 4. Organize the Office of Strategy Management (OSM).

Strategic Business and IT Alignment Assessment : A Modeling Approach Associated with Enterprise Architecture

Plazaola Prado, José Leonel January 2009 (has links)
Information Technology (IT) systems are pervasive tools for contemporary enterprises to achieve their mission and goals. A key issue for a well-functioning enterprise is to keep business and IT strategies aligned as they continuously evolve. Although many practitioners and researchers offer business and IT alignment theories and approaches there is no silver bullet solution for all the issues involved in Strategic Business and IT Alignment (SBITA), which is still ranked amongst the five top enterprise executives? concerns year after year. In this thesis two SBITA assessment methods are presented. The first is the Organization-wide Approach for Assessing SBITA, developed as an enhancement of Jerry N. Luftman's SBITA assessment approach in terms of measurability, traceability and organizational involvement. The second is the Alignment Metamodel Assessment Method (AMAM). Both methods are based on well established references and approaches and they are presented with systematic documentation for their application and reusability as shown in the included papers and reported case studies. This is a composite thesis that, besides the introduction, includes five papers (papers A-E). Paper A describes Luftman's SBITA assessment approach and its enhancement in terms of measurability, traceability and organizational involvement, the proposed Organization-wide Approach for Assessing SBITA. Results from applying this approach in two case studies in companies in Sweden and Nicaragua are also included. Paper B describes the AMAM. It explains how a metamodel is deduced and how the SBITA assessment will be performed. This paper argues that the AMAM can be affiliated to the EA discipline as a guide or reference for identifying the relevant EA?s representations for the SBITA concern, mitigating the expenses and drawbacks of the often larger modeling required in applying EA frameworks. Paper C shows a weighting of the importance of the SBITA topics, taking as reference the Henderson & Venkatraman Strategic Alignment Model (SAM) - the basis of Luftman?s SBITA assessment approach -by relating it to the relevant and highly cited references in the field of SBITA. Paper D explains the criteria and the process for associating the AMAM artifacts with the Zachman´s Enterprise Architecture Framework and reports the pattern of association into the EA dominion. Paper E reports the details of the processes and results of applying the developed AMAM in a case study conducted in an intensive IT services enterprise in Nicaragua. / QC 20100805

Micro strategy and strategising in the financial services industry in Namibia

Feldmann, Silke A. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since it is recognised that strategy-as-a-practice is an inherently complex affair, the relevant strategic processes and activities within organisations were explored, with the purpose of the study being to gain a deeper understanding of the strategising roles that lead to the formulation and implementation of strategy. It was found that competitive advantage comes from unique strategic processes within the organisation, which, in turn, depend on specific actors, behaviours, discourse and communication, as well as on the level of shared strategic understanding within the organisation. The financial services industry in Namibia formed the focus of the study. Financial services companies are regarded as risky, highly complex institutions, because of the mostly intangible products and services they offer. The business models they employ have evolved into highly sophisticated sets of processes that require heavy investments in technology and business systems. Capricorn Investment Holdings (CIH) was used as a case study to examine micro strategy and strategising within the financial services industry in Namibia. Focus was therefore placed on banking (Bank Windhoek) and insurance companies (Welwitschia Nammic Insurance Brokers and Santam Namibia). Bank Windhoek, Welwitschia Nammic Insurance Brokers and Santam Namibia are subsidiary companies of CIH. Examining strategising from the micro strategic perspective has many advantages, such as highlighting both the dynamics and the consequences of strategic action, while allowing for a much richer understanding of the multiple factors that influence strategic processes. These include the social, political and economic contexts within which strategic action has occurred. The main findings of this study are that strategising processes are less structured at group level than within the subsidiary companies. The culture of the organisation, including the behaviours of leaders, determines the strategic thinking capabilities of staff. Moreover, the findings show that strategising capabilities are stronger at leadership level and that mature companies are likely to involve more stakeholders in the formulation of their strategy. The findings also suggest that there is a need to include intuitive approaches in strategy development. Lastly, within CIH formal strategising processes outweigh those interactions where strategy is developed through informal talks and discussions.
