"The Fifth Avenue of Richmond": The Development of the 800 and 900 Blocks of West Franklin Street, Richmond, Virginia, 1855-1925Culhane, Kerri Elizabeth 01 January 1997 (has links)
The 800 and 900 blocks of West Franklin Street, Richmond , Virginia were developed during the period of 1855 to 1925. As a result, manifested on these two blocks are important examples of late-Victorian and early twentieth-century American architecture. The predominance of the Second Empire and Richardsonian Romanesque styles indicate that this neighborhood experienced the most intensive building campaign during the 1880s and 1890s. This development corresponds to the period of economic recovery experienced in Richmond after the Reconstruction. Though Richmond suffered economically due to its geographical and political position during and immediately following the Civil War (1861-65), the post-Reconstruction economic recovery made possible financial success for a small number of enterprising Richmonders. Tobacco, trade, and manufacturing were the leading occupations of the financially successful. The original residents of West Franklin Street and their homes are evidence of this prosperity. Roughly one quarter made their fortunes in tobacco, one quarter in manufacturing, one quarter were merchants of one type of another, and the balance were independent business men, lawyers, stockbrokers, and real estate developers. These successful Richmonders chose to erect monuments to their success in the homes they commissioned from local and nationally known architects, builders, and craftspeople. This thesis charts the pattern of social, aesthetic, and architectural development by identifying the patrons, architects, contractors, and craftspeople who built the 800 and 900 blocks of West Franklin Street.
The 800 and 900 blocks of West Franklin Street, comprised in a National Register Historic District, are now largely owned by the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). In 1925, the school began acquiring the old residences and remodelling them into dormitories and classrooms, eventually acquiring 34 out of 42 of the extant original buildings. Consequently, VCU now owns a major intact collection of architectural and historical merit. Though VCU has commissioned master plans and architectural guidelines to guide the development of the growing university, there are no specific guidelines for the maintenance and treatment of the historic buildings. The adoption of and adherence to a university-wide preservation plan is proposed in order to protect this unique and important district.

To gain in- depth information regarding this issue, a qualitative research approach was followed. Data were collected by means of story-telling, guided by two foundational question themes. Firstly, experiences of family life and schooling and secondly, experiences of survival on the street and repeated criminal involvement. Data were analyzed according to the guideline discussed in Creswell (l998). Data were verified by means of measures suggested by Creswell (l998). Findings indicated that participants in this study suffered severe emotional and physical and material deprivation in their family contexts before moving to the street. Google Earth och Street View : En säkerhetsrisk för svenska företag och myndigheter?Lindberg, Sandra January 2012 (has links)
In recent years, the establishment of 3D-applications on the internet, in order to show geographic areas and places, has become more common. Examples of such applications are the web services Google Earth and Street View, supplied by the company Google. The rapid development of the 3D-sevices has resulted in better image resolution and more detailed satellite photos. This in turn has led to that privacy and security related to the 3D-services has been actualized. From several parts of the world, Google has faced contestations and protests. Reasons alleged in these cases are among others integrity aspects as well as defense and security reasons. The aim of this work is to examine the security related matters that can occur during Google´s continuous establishment of its 3D-sevices in Sweden. The examine is done to get an overall picture over how Swedish companies and government agencies consider Google´s services and the law associated with these. The examine has been done through a written questionaries’ that has been sent to Swedish companies and government agencies and embassies located in Sweden, that have been considered to be a potential target of terrorist crime or severe robberies. The examine show that Swedish companies and government agencies have good knowledge of Google and their 3D-services. A great majority of the respondents have identified security risks associated with the Google 3D-applications. The general view is that the technology development that lead to more and more detailed photo technology will lead to a greater actualization of the security related matters in the future. Also the fact that the difficulties to adjust the national laws in order to prevent the problems considers being a reason that will be actualized more in the future.

Quality of service of tram services in Hong KongKwok, Ka-yan., 郭嘉欣. January 2011 (has links)
In 2010, HKT applied for the increase in tram fare which is the first time of
application in the last 13 years. The main supporting for their application is the
urgent need to improve the efficiency, safety and quality of services in order to
provide the sustainable tram operations and ensure there is sufficient capital
support for the over $200 million improvement projects while the foreseeable
business deficits in 2011
In view of the reason for applying the increase in fare, the tram service quality
will be measured according to the fixed route transit service measures from the
Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual. Both of the availability and
quality factors will be measured by the observation and passengers’ survey
respectively. Furthermore, the 2009 survey result will also be used under the
comparative approach to find out the changes in passengers’ perception and
expectation to the tram service and their response to the increase in tram fare.
By figuring out the actual quality of tram service, the necessity and the
effectiveness of the tram service improvement programmes would be identified.
Moreover, in order to access and monitor the tram service quality, it is used to
analyze the applicability of the QoS measurement in Hong Kong tram service
and important to develop the new quality of service measure for the Hong Kong
tram according to the specialized factors for tram service that is important for the
government, HKT and the tram passengers in order to access and monitoring the
quality of tram service provided. / published_or_final_version / Transport Policy and Planning / Master / Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning

A moving heritage : Hong Kong tramcars as an iconic urban heritageSy, Kin-man, 施健文 January 2014 (has links)
This year is the 110th Anniversary of Hong Kong Tramways. Serving Hong Kong Island for 110 years, Hong Kong Tramways has not only been a means of local transportation, but also an urban heritage contributing to our collective attachment and the identity of our city. The tramlines largely maintained its original alignment with minor adjustments mainly owing to the relocation of tram depots. However, the rapid urban development along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island had been constantly changing the context of the tramway. Hills were leveled and harbour was reclaimed. The tramway undoubtedly witnesses the changing urban landscape of Hong Kong Island.
The tramway is a unique urban feature with great contribution to the legibility of our city. It not only takes us navigate through our city, but also provides a useful reference for us in finding our direction in the urban areas of Hong Kong Island. The moving tramcar is an iconic urban heritage of our city. Its fleet is the only one in the world that exclusively operates double-deckers without government subsidies.
As a fully commercial tram system, it has to improve continuously to keep abreast of the society and compete with other means of transportation. Modernization of the fleet inevitably is imperative. However, how can the tramcars be rehabilitated and upgraded with modern technology yet maintain its heritage values?
This dissertation aims to maintain the heritage significance of the tramcar by identifying its character-defining elements through the votes of Hong Kong people. / published_or_final_version / Conservation / Master / Master of Science in Conservation
