Effects of microstructure on the spall behavior of aluminum-magnesium alloys

Whelchel, Ricky L. 22 May 2014 (has links)
This research focuses on the spall properties of aluminum-magnesium (Al-Mg)alloys.Aluminum alloy 5083 (Al 5083) was used as a model alloy for the work performed in this study. Al-Mg alloys represent a light-weight and corrosion resistant alloy system often used in armor plating. It is desirable to process armor plate material to yield a microstructure that provides maximum resistance to spall failure due to blast and projectile impacts. The blast and impact resistance has often been quantified based on the measurement of the spall strength and the Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL). The spall properties of Al-Mg alloys were measured for four different microstructural states resultant from varying processing conditions. The four microstructures include: (a) textured grain structure from a rolled Al 5083-H116 plate, (b) sub-micron grain structure produced using equi-channel angular pressing (ECAP),(c) equiaxed grain structure, and (d) precipitation hardened microstucture from an Al-9wt.% Mg alloy. The overall results show that grain size is not the most dominant microstructural feature affecting spall strength in aluminum alloys, when the impact conditions are the same. Texture, especially if brittle inclusions align along the grains, appears to have the most dominant effect resulting in decreased spall strength. Furthermore, one-dimensional modeling shows that the inclusion size and distribution is the controlling factor for void formation during spalling. Grain size does affect the decompression rate dependence of each microstructure, whereby smaller grain sizes result in a larger power law exponent for fits of spall strength versus decompression rate. Unlike the spall strength, the HEL shows an increasing trend with decreased grain size, as would be expected from a Hall-Petch type effect, indicating that a smaller grain size is best for penetration resistance. Samples processed using ECAP alone provide the best combination of spall strength and HEL and therefore the most promise for improved blast and penetration resistance of aluminum-magnesium alloy armor plates.

Strength and Modulus of Recycled Aggregate Concrete Subjected to Wetting and Drying Cycles

Unknown Date (has links)
The reuse of crushed aggregates for producing structural concrete is a major concern especially when it comes to its strength and durability. This study evaluated recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) for its strength and durability under simulated environmental degradation in the form of wetting-drying (W-D) cycles. The study consisted of two phases, each involving the determination of the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity using the conventional method and also a nondestructive ultrasonic pulse velocity method (Pundit Lab). Phase 1 involved 7-day curing followed by 30 W-D cycles, while Phase 2 included 28-day cured samples subjected to 15 W-D cycles. It was found that RAC specimens subjected to W-D cycles had minimal degradation in strength, making the use of RAC in construction very promising. Results from Pundit Lab compared reasonably well with conventional test results, showing promise as a nondestructive tool for the evaluation of RAC properties. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2018. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Durabilidade de união e carga cíclica para falha do silicato de litío reforçado por zircônia após cimentação adesiva /

Diniz, Vandeberg. January 2018 (has links)
The fatigue behavior of a zirconium-reinforced lithium silicate-based ceramic (without additional crystallization, glaze firing and additional crystallization firing) adhesively cemented to a material like dentin (NEMA G10) was also evaluated with or without thermal aging. For the microtensile test, the zirconia reinforced lithium silicate ceramic blocks were cut into smaller blocks and randomly divided into 12 groups (N=72; n=6). In the fatigue test, discs (diameter 12 mm and thickness 1.2 mm) were cut, cemented to NEMA G10 epoxy resin discs (diameter 12 mm and thickness 2.3 mm), assigned into 6 groups (N=120, n=20) and subjected to the fatigue test by the ladder method (100,000 cycles, 20 Hertz frequency). The bond strength (MPa) and fatigue (N) data were submitted to 2-Way ANOVA, and respectively submitted to Tukey and Bonferroni tests (p <0.05). The results showed a statistically significant difference for the "thermocycling" factor (2-Way ANOVA, p <0.05), with the groups without thermocycling been superior to the aged groups (Tukey). The Bonferroni test indicated that within the same condition (with or without thermocycling), the groups with additional crystallization or glaze firing showed higher results than the groups without additional firing. Thus, the bond between ZLS and the resin cement was negatively affected by thermal aging in water. On the other hand, the fatigue behavior of ZLS discs cemented on NEMA G10 was higher in the groups that received glaze or crystallization firing and lower in the aged groups...(Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Evaluation of the torsion test for determining the shear strength of structural lumber

Heck, Leanne Renee 06 November 1997 (has links)
The torsion test was evaluated as a method for determining the shear strength of full-size structural lumber. The evaluation involved an experimental length study, an experimental depth study, and a finite element study. The length study consisted of fifty nominal 2x4 specimens, ten specimens for each length, and ten American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) shear blocks. One 14 foot long board yielded one specimen for each length: (a) 21.0", (b) 28.5", (c) 32.0", (d) 35.5", (e) 39.0", and (f) an ASTM D143-94 shear block. The statistical analysis revealed no evidence that the length affected the shear strength. The depth study consisted of fifty specimens, ten specimens for each depth: (a) 2x4, (b) 2x6, (c) 2x8, (d) 2x10, and (e) 2x12. In addition, fifty ASTM shear blocks, one block for each specimen, were tested. The statistical study did not reveal convincing evidence of a depth effect on shear strength, even after accounting for specific gravity and shear span as covariates. Failure modes for the torsion samples involved a longitudinal shear crack at the mid-point of the longest side, which propagated toward the ends of the specimen and through the cross section perpendicular to the growth rings. The finite element model revealed that uniform shear stress occurs within the shear span, which begins and ends a distance of approximately two times the depth plus the grip distance away from each end of the member. In addition, torsion theory verified that the experimental shear failure plane that occurs within the shear span is parallel to the grain and the shear slippage is also parallel to the grain, similar to the known shear failure in specimens subjected to bending loads. Based on the results of this study, the torsion test is the best practical method to determine the pure shear strength of full-size structural lumber, because the test yields 100% shear failures and the specimen is in a state of pure shear stress. / Graduation date: 1998
