Environmental effects on dental student attitudes

Walker, Paul O., 1941- January 1972 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the influence of the dental school environment upon certain attitudes of dental students. An initial attitudinal profile of beginning first-year dental students was established by means of the Allport-Vernon-Lindzey Study of Values. Using the same instrument, pre-test and post-test profiles were established for dental students at the beginning of the third year and after eight months of clinical exposure. A cross-sectional comparison was made of the initial profile of the first-year students with the pre-test and post-test profiles of the third-year students. A significant difference, at the .05 level of confidence, was observed in a comparison of the religious values of the first-year students with the pretest of the third-year students. No significant differences were observed in the other five values. In addition, no significant differences in any values were observed when the first-year students were compared to the post-test of the third-year students. A longitudinal comparison of the pre-test and post-test profiles were made. No significant differences were demonstrated for the entire sample and for each quartile in any of the six areas with which the Study of Values is concerned. Additional information was gathered for the third-year students by using a questionnaire. The questionnaire revealed dissatisfaction and frustration with various aspects of the dental school environment. Within the defined limitations of this study, it appears that the sample of third-year dental students at Indiana University School of Dentistry did not demonstrate measurable changes in values despite an indication of dissatisfaction and frustration with the dental school environment. From the answers to the questionnaire, it seems likely that some of this frustration could be reduced by an educational approach which would provide clearly stated course objectives and criteria for evaluation, earlier clinical exposure, elimination of repetitive course content, more individualized instruction, and more informality in the teaching-learning environment.

Development of a model educational presentation on Zendium directed towards graduating dental and dental hygiene students

Glaser, Caryn Lisa January 1984 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University, Henry M. Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry, 1984 (Dental Public Health). / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 58-59). / Future dental professionals receive very little information on new dental products. The goal of this project was to introduce Zendium, a new dentifrice manufactured by CooperCare, Oral-B, to graduating dental studentS, post doctoral periodontic students and senior dental hygiene students. This information was presented at the dental and dental hygiene schools to fifteen (15) dental students, thirteen (13) periodontic students and eighty-one (81) dental hygiene students. Students were asked to complete two questionnaires to evaluate the appropriateness of the presentation and their reaction to Zendium. Results indicated that the students felt the presentation was appropriate in terms of the educational level, length of presentation, use of visual aids and speaker’s knowledge of the product. Their response to Zendium was mixed, with the highest acceptance of the product by senior dental hygiene students. The students had several concerns about the product, including flavor, lack of ADA approval and the need for more long-term clinical studies to be conducted in the United States. It is hoped that this information will aid CooperCare, Oral-B with their marketing strategies of Zendium to other dental professionals.

Efeito da magnificação na postura de trabalho em odontologia /

Wajngarten, Danielle. January 2018 (has links)
The studies 1 and 2 aimed to review the literature in order to gather informations regarding to magnification and ergonomics and magnification in endodontics, respectively. Study 3 aimed to determine dental students' visual acuity and neck angulation when using magnification devices and distances from the operating field. Forty students from each of the second through fifth years of the five-year program at the School of Dentistry of Araraquara were selected (N=160). Visual acuity was tested using a miniature Snellen eye chart under five different settings (unaided vision; simple loupe; Galilean loupe; Keplerian loupe and an operating microscope). Photographs were taken during the visual acuity exam in order to evaluate the angulation of the subjects' necks in a neutral posture. The two-factor Analysis of Variance - ANOVA and the Games-Howell post-hoc test were performed for the different years of the course (α=0.05). A significant difference in visual acuity and neck angulation was found between the "magnification device" and "distance" factors in each of the graduating classes analyzed (p<0.05). At a standardized distance, the Keplerian loupe, the Galilean loupe and the operating microscope provided the greatest visual acuity. At a subjectively comfortable distance, the Keplerian and Galilean loupes produced the best visual acuity. Regarding... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor
