Effect of internal solitary waves on mine detection in the western Philippine Sea east of Taiwan

Upper layer temperature in the western Philippine Sea near Taiwan was sampled using a coastal monitoring buoy with fifteen themistors attached from July 28-August 7, 2005. Internal waves and internal solitons were identifed during the empirical orthogonal function analysis. Without the IW and IS, the power spectra, structure functions, and singular measures (respresenting the intemittency) of the temprature field satisfy the power law with multi-scale characteristics at all depths. The IW does not change the basic characteristics of the multifractal structure. However, the IS changes the power exponent of the power spectra drastically, especially in the low wave number domain. It breaks down the power law of the structure function and increases the intermittency parameter. The physical mechanisms causing these different effects need to be explored futher. The Comprehansive Acoustic Simulation System was applied to determine how the IS affect the mines detection by computing the transmission loss (TL) and the ray traces of rand-dependent and range independent cases during the IS period. The maximum TL difference is 20 dB. As a result, the mine detection probability will dramatically be reduced to 1% of the original detection probability.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This thesis centers around actual field operations and post-mission analysis of data acquired using a REMUS AUV operated by the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Research. It was one of many platforms that were utilized for data collection during AOSN II, (Autonomous Oceanographic Sampling Network II), an ONR sponsored exercise for dynamic oceanographic data taking and model based analysis using adaptive sampling. The vehicle's ability to collect oceanographic data consisting of conductivity, temperature, and salinity during this experiment is assessed and problem areas investigated. Of particular interest are the temperature and salinity profiles measured fromlong transect runs of 18 Km. length into the southern parts of Monterey Bay. Experimentation with the REMUS as a mine detection asset was also performed. The design and development of the mine hunting experiment is discussed as well as its results and their analysis. Of particular interest in this portion of the work is the issue relating to repeatability and precision of contact localization, obtained from vehicle position and sidescan sonar measurements. / Lieutenant, United States Navy

Maritime manoeuvring optimization : path planning in minefield threat environments

The aim of the research project that is the subject of this thesis is to apply mathematical techniques, especially those in the area of operations research, to the problem of maritime minefield transit. We develop several minefield models applicable to different aspects of the minefield problem. These include optimal mine clearance, shortest time traversal and time constrained traversal. We hope the suite of models and tools developed will help make mine field clearance and traversal both safer and more efficient and that exposition of the models will bring a clearer understanding of the mine problem from a mathematical perspective. In developing the solutions to mine field models, extensive use is made of network path planning algorithms, particularly the Weight Constrained Shortest Path Problem (WCSPP) for which the current state-of-the-art algorithm is extended. This is done by closer integration of Lagrangean relaxation and preprocessing to reduce the size of the network. This is then integrated with gap-closing algorithms based on enumeration to provide optimal or near optimal solutions to the path planning problem. We provide extensive computational evidence on the performance of our algorithm and compare it to other algorithms found in the literature. This tool then became fundamental in solving various separate minefield models. Our models can be broadly separated into obstacle models in which mine affected regions are treated as obstacles to be avoided and continuous threat in which each point of space has an associated risk. In the later case, we wish to find a path that minimizes the integral of the risk along the path while constraining the length of the path. We call this the Continuous Euclidean Length Constrained Minimum Cost Path Problem (C-LCMCPP), for which we present a novel network approach to solving this continuous problem. This approach results in being able to calculate a global lower bound on a non-convex optimization problem.
