Structural Studies of Derivatives of Thiazolidine-4-Carboxylic Acid

Martins, Maria de Lurdes 09 1900 (has links)

A series of derivatives of thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid was prepared from two sulfur containing aminoacids, cysteine and D-penicillamine. Cysteine is very easily oxidized to a disulfide, while penicillamine is less susceptible to oxidation of the sulfhydryl group because of greater steric hindrance. Sulfhydryl aminoacids react readily with aldehydes and ketones to give thiazolidine rings with varying degrees of substitution.

Many of the compounds prepared were studied in solution and in the solid state by means of nmr, vibrational spectroscopy, mass spectra and X-ray crystallographic data. Thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acids contain a free carboxyl group and a secondary amino group, both of which can be ionized. Infrared spectra and X-ray crystallography are useful in detecting ionization and hydrogen bonds. An example is given of a compound that can exist in both the zwitterion and the non ionized state depending on the solvent of recrystallization.

From previous work in our group we were predicting that increasing steric crowding in the thiazolidine ring in close proximity to the ionizable groups would decrease the tendency of these molecules to ionize. No such simple relationship could be found.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Calculated Equilibrium Constants for Isotopic Exchange Reactions Involving Sulfur-Containing Compounds

Tudge, Allan 05 1900 (has links)

Recent investigations by H. G. Thode, J. Macnamara and C. Collins have shown that the S^32/S^34 ratio in natural sulfur-containing compounds varies by as much as five percent. These wide-spread variations suggest that fractionation of the sulfur isotopes occurs in natural processes due to differences in the chemical properties of isotopic molecules. In order to determine the magnitude of the effects that could be expected, partition function ratios for isotopic molecules containing sulfur and equilibrium constants for many isotopic exchange reactions involving sulfur have been calculated by methods of statistical mechanics. The results of these calculations are discussed.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Calorimetric determination of the interaction of Cu, Fe, and V oxides with SO₂ and measurement of sulfur (IV) and sulfur (VI) in particulate samples from Utah Valley

Cannon, Douglas F. 01 December 1975 (has links)
The adsorption of SO2 by metal oxides suspended in decane were studied by calorimetric titration. The adsorption per surface area decreases in order CuO > Cu2O > Fe2O3 > V2O5. An Andersen High Volume sampler was used to obtain particulate samples from five sites in Utah County. Particulate sulfur (IV) and sulfur (VI) was analyzed by thermometric titration with K2Cr2O7 and by a direct injection enthalpimetric determination using BaCl2. Results show that little oxidation of the S(IV) occurs after it is released from the Kennecott smelter stack.
