Role of the interface in metal solvent extraction kinetics.

Chamupathi, Virittamulla Gamage. January 1987 (has links)
Interfacially active reagents are utilized in metal solvent extraction processes and it is therefore important to understand the role of the liquid-liquid interface in the study of the kinetics and equilibria of extraction. The diffusion problems encountered in the traditional apparatus were overcome by using a high speed stirring apparatus. The microporous teflon membrane phase separator permitted more accurate measurements of interfacial areas, characterization of extraction kinetics of metal chelates, and a greater understanding of the phase separation mechanism. In contrast to the neutral ligands, the anionic ligand of dithizones and substituted dithizones showed significant interfacial adsorption at the chloroform/water interface as monitored spectro-photometrically. Equilibrium studies on p-halodithizones indicated that the adsorption constant increased as the substituent was altered from chloro to bromo to iodo, and with the distribution ratio of the ligand. Kinetic studies on dithizone and p-iododithizone with Ni(II) and Zn(II) indicated that the extent of participation of the interface in solvent extraction kinetics of these metal ions is dictated by the interfacial activity of the extractant and the mechanisms of the rate limiting step in the bulk aqueous and interfacial regions.

Self-assembled thin polymer film used for sensing application

Li, Feng January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Chemistry / Takashi Ito / Polymer thin films have played an important role in our everyday lives ranging from industrial to biomedical applications. In this thesis, two major topics based on polymer thin films including photopolymerized self-assembled monolayer and nanoporous thin films derived from diblock copolymer are discussed. In the first part of this thesis, a well-packed self-assembled monolayer with phosphonic acid as head group and diacetylenic functional group in the tail formed on AlGaN/GaN surface. According to water contact angle and UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy data, the stability of this self assembled monolayer on oxidized AlGaN/ GaN surface can be improved by photopolymerization of SAMs. The photopolymerization efficiency of the SAMs is effected by the position of polymerization functional group in the alkyl chain. In the second part of this thesis, PS-b-PMMA diblock copolymer thin films were prepared, characterized and applied as a template for electron transfer efficiency determination. The surface COOH group in nanoporous thin films derived from PS-b-PMMA were modified with ferrocene redox moieties having different linker lengths in the organic phase. The surface functionalization efficiency was quantitatively assessed by measuring the monovalent probe cations released from the surface COOH groups via cation-exchange processes using highly- sensitive analytical techniques including spectrofluorometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The surface coverage of the redox moieties is an important parameter to determine the electron hopping efficiency. The electron propagation resulted from electron hopping across relatively large spacing that was controlled by the motion of anchored redox sites. The longer linker led to the larger physical displacement range of anchored ferrocene moieties, facilitating the approach of the adjacent ferrocene moieties within a distance required for electron self-exchange reaction. Faradic currents originating from redox-involved electron hopping through the ferrocene moieties anchored onto the insulator surface decreased with increasing the concentration of beta-cyclodextrin ([beta]-CD) in aqueous solution. The current could be recovered by adding redox-inactive guest molecules of [beta]-CD to the solution.

Superconductivity has always been a hot topic in the field of condensed matter physics since its discovery by Onnes in 1911. How the superconductivity was affected by size attracted much attention especially after P. W. Anderson proposed a criterion of the breakdown of superconductivity in 1959, where the superconductors will lose their superconductivity when the energy level spacing at Fermi level (E[subscript F]) is comparable to or larger than the superconducting energy gap. As stated in the criterion, the superconductivity correlates greatly with the density of states (DOS) at E[subscript F] within the superconducting gap. The system of individual Pb islands grown on Si(111) provides an ideal platform to modulate the DOS at EF through both the quantum size confinement and the quantum well states (QWS) effects. Moreover, this system excludes the problems of size distribution, couplings among particles and phase fluctuation of the previously studied ensembles of particles. / In my thesis, I first introduce briefly the basic knowledge of superconductivity, such as BCS theory and Eliashberg theory, as well as its behaviors in a normal metal-insulator-superconductor tunneling junction. Then the study of superconductivity by quantum size effect on ensemble superconductors and metallic nanostructures is reviewed. For the widely studied system of Pb islands, I discuss in more detail the recently discovered pseudogap which was important and critical for analyzing the superconductivity. / In chapter 2, the knowledge of sample growth is given and a simple introduction to scanning tunneling spectroscopy is presented. To study the superconductivity spectra of Pb islands, we use two methods to analyze them, one the zero bias conductance (ZBC) method and the other the superconductivity spectrum analysis. In the end of this chapter, Dynes function and deconvolution procedure are introduced in detail. / In chapter 3, I introduce one of my important works in my Phd study, to improve the instrumental energy resolution. By reconstructing the instrumental structure, grounding properly, shielding RF noise, and cleaning the voltage gap source, the instrumental energy resolution has been improved greatly from ~0.9 meV to ~0.2 meV. I compare our current results both with previous results and results from other groups. / Before the instrumental improvement, we find that the measurements were very poor and the conclusion thus obtained were incorrect. To show the importance of the instrumental improvement, I introduce briefly the previous work in chapter 4. Under the poor instrumental condition, we found that the limiting size of superconductivity above 3.2 K was determined to be ~30 nm² for 9 ML thick Pb islands and that Pb island superconductors undergo a change from strong to weak electron-phonon coupling. / After the instrumental improvement, we not only correct some conclusions of the previous studies on superconductivity of 9 ML Pb islands, but also observed the more non-trivial variation of superconductivity from the change of island size or density of state (DOS) at Fermi level (E[subscript F]) by the quantum well states (QWS). A critical regime is observed for small Pb islands. As the DOS of 8 ML Pb islands at E[subscript F] is larger than that of 9 ML Pb islands, the transition temperatures (T[subscript C]) of 8 ML Pb islands hold a systematic difference larger than those of 9 ML Pb islands. The T[subscript C] results for both 8 ML and 9 ML Pb islands follow the same gradual suppression and the ratio 2△(0)/k[subscript B]T[subscript C] remains unchanged by the size effect. Further study indicates that for very small 8 ML and 9 ML Pb islands they are still superconducting, inconsistent with the Anderson criteria and other experimental results. This observation suggests a possible role of wetting layer on superconductivity of these small Pb islands. / This work, I believe, is fundamentally interesting and beneficial to understand deeply the phenomena of superconductivity modulated by size effect and DOS change at E[subscript F] and will inspire more future studies in this field. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Liu, Jiepeng = 掃描隧道譜研究Si(111)表面上單個鉛島的超導尺寸效應及態密度影響 / 羅杰鵬. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 136-144). / Electronic reproduction. Ge(100) has atomic and electronic structures quite similar to those of Si(100). As a comparison, we have studied the oxidation of Ge(100) surface. Our comparison of the initial oxidation of Ge(100) with that of Si(100) by molecular oxygen shows that the precursor-mediate mechanism and direct adsorption mechanism are common to both systems. (Abstract shortened by UMI.) / It is often been argued that a direct [2+2] addition of unsaturated hydrocarbons to the Si-Si dimer is symmetry forbidden, according to the Woodward-Hoffmann rule. This view is now challenged by our calculations on the reaction path for a concerted [2+2] addition of C2H4 to a Si-Si dimer on Si(100), which identifies a barrier of only ∼0.1eV. Our analysis shows that this is due to the peculiar feature for a surface reaction, when the HOMO and LUMO bands cross the Fermi level of the substrate, as previously suggested by Hoffmann. It illustrates an important conceptual distinction between a gas phase and a surface reaction. / Many previous theoretical studies on the interaction between O2 and Si(100) have neglected the differences between triplet O2 (ground state) and singlet O2 (excited state), and are thus unable to explain the know experimental observations in surface scattering of O2. We demonstrate that in reality, triplet O2 can also react with Si(100). With our computation results on the potential energy curves of the adsorption of triplet O2 on Si(100) and the adsorption structures along these curves, we can explain the known experimental results. The proper adsorption pathway goes through a shallow physisorption potential well, a small transition state and reaches a molecular adsorption state. There are also some interesting interactions between the potential energy curves of the triplet O2 adsorption and singlet O2 adsorption. / This thesis addresses the basic physics and chemistry of some surface reactions by first-principles methods based on density functional theory. The reaction systems probed by this thesis include the cycloaddition of C2H4 on Si(100), and initial oxidation of Si(100), Ge(100) and Al(111) by molecular oxygen. They are all technologically important systems and yet simple enough for us to study them in details theoretically. Although they have been studied both experimentally and theoretically, our first principles calculations reveal new insights that are contrary to prevalent opinions. / Fan Xiaoli = 从头算法研究研究在硅100, 锗100 和铝111 表面上的反应 / 范晓丽. / "June 2005." / Adviser: Lau Woon-ming Leo. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-07, Section: B, page: 3854. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2005. / Includes bibliographical references. / Electronic reproduction.
