Relationships between growth rate, feed efficiency, carcass quality and certain organ weights in swine

Bowden, David M. January 1957 (has links)
The object of this study was to consider effects of treatment on and relationships among, certain economic characteristics and organ weights in purebred Yorkshire market hogs. Included are measurements on 132 pigs from three experimental groups. Economic characteristics measured were; rate of gain, dressing percentage, feed per unit gain, lean cuts, fat cuts and belly. Organs weighed were heart, liver, spleen, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and adrenals. In the test of forage utilization pasture fed pigs grew slower, produced leaner carcasses and had heavier hearts, spleens and stomachs than those fed in drylot. In the two tests of dried apple pomace utilization addition of 20% pomace had no significant effects on the characteristics or organs measured. Increasing the level to 40%, however, resulted in slower growth, greater feed consumption per unit gain, lower dressing percentage, leaner carcass, heavier liver and heavier large intestine. Physiological aspects of correlations and regressions among the characteristics and organs are discussed as are the influences of treatments on these relationships. / Land and Food Systems, Faculty of / Graduate

Artificial rearing of low birth-weight pigs

Whiting, Richard John January 1982 (has links)
Four experiments were conducted to evaluate a crude immunoglobulin preparation fractionated from abattoir porcine serum with ammonium sulphate. The preparation was used as an additive to milk replacer for colostrum deprived, low birth-weight pigs reared in a non-isolated environment. Six pigs per treatment were used in experiments 1 and 3. Eight pigs per treatment were used in experiments 2 and 4. In the first experiment, members of the negative control group did not survive and mortality of the other three groups which received some immunity was high. In the second experiment, the negative control group was eliminated from the trial, so those receiving only colostrum for 12 hours died, but the two groups receiving immunoglobulin treatment showed improved survival (63, 50%). In the third experiment, higher levels of immunoglobulin (15g./kg. body weight, initially followed by 5g./kg/day) did not show a significant effect on survival in comparison with the previous levels of 10g./kg. to 2g./kg.. However, rate of gain in body weight was significantly higher in the high dose level of immunoglobulin. In the fourth experiment the pigs were maintained on immunoglobulin for 10, 15, and 21 days and it was found that 21 day treatment eliminated deaths. The highest rate of gain was achieved with those on 21 day treatment in experiment 4. However, these rates of gain were considerably below those achieved with Digs on the sow. The causes of mortality were predominately E. coli scours, septicaemia due to E. coli and other bacteria, pneumonia, and in the last two experiments, Salmonellosis. The prevention of death in experiment 4 by the immunoglobulin extract, indicated the success of the preparation against the Salmonella species encountered. / Land and Food Systems, Faculty of / Graduate

Swine feeding investigations

Fish, Ernest E. 01 January 1917 (has links) (PDF)
The United States leads the world in the production of swine. In an official estimate of January 1, 1915, she is credited with 64,618,000, which is more than three times as Germany, her nearest competitor. In the United States swine are produced chiefly in the central section of the country, generally spoken of as the "corn belt". This is largely due to the profitable returns made from corn when it is fed to swine. Sixteen per cent of the nutrients of corn fed to the average hog is returned in pork, while only three per cent is returned in beef.
