This report surveys many of the interfacing techniques currently in use on emerging military training devices. The primary focus of this report is associated with the hardware aspects of computer interfacing. After a brief introduction into the various aspects of military training devices, this study presents various computer related interfacing techniques used on military training devices. Topics addressed in the study include custom designed interfaces, commercial packages, serial communications with an emphasis on RS-232, -422, -423, and -449 serial standards as well as local area networks. Then, a number of bus standards are presented and finally, interface products pertaining to computers previously used for most training device applications are summarized

A training transfer study of the Indoor Simulated Marksmanship TrainerYates, William W. 09 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution in unlimited. / This thesis examines the effectiveness of the Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer (ISMT) as a tool to train shooters in the fundamentals of marksmanship. Key concepts explored in the research are verification of skills transfer resulting from practice and the predictive value of simulated performance to proficiency at real task performance. There was no statistical difference in the scores of recruits trained in the ISMT versus a control group that was not trained in the ISMT. Scores on simulated firing were not a strong predictor of live fire performance. In a second experiment subjects were evaluated on their proficiency and improvement during un-coached practice at the task of simulated precision fire on a target at a simulated known distance of 300 yards from the shooters. After comparable amounts of practice in the ISMT, subjects who had not previously received formal marksmanship training failed to demonstrate levels of proficiency comparable to those subjects who had previously received formal marksmanship training in the military. Consequently, the research found no evidence to suggest the ISMT qualifies as a black box training apparatus capable of imparting skill through practice without the added presence of expert instruction or an existing knowledge of marksmanship techniques. / Major, United States Marine Corps

The Chromakey Augmented Virtual Environment (ChrAVE) 3.0 System is a training system created to augment initial, refresher, and proficiency training in helicopter aviation using accurate simulation. Designed around advanced chromakey technologies, this system is deployable, scalable, and flexible, allowing for use in austere environments such as aboard ship or in forward deployed locations. The goal of system development was to prove that a collection of commercially available components could be integrated along with the Virtual Environment Helicopter (VEHELO) 2.0 software package in order to provide a realistic simulated environment in which pilots can practice skill sets that are critical to mission success. The focus of this thesis is the validation of ChrAVE 3.0 as an augmented trainer that can be adapted for use inside an actual aircraft cockpit. By placing the pilot in the most realistic simulation available ChrAVE 3.0 will enhance development of skills such as Terrain Appreciation, Crew Resource Management (CRM), and Situational Awareness (SA). Continuing past research, this thesis will analyze empirical data collected from training flights to further prove its value as an instructional tool. ChrAVE 3.0 is housed in three man-portable containers and can be set up within minutes with little or no prior experience.

The controller consists of two microprocessor systems that communicate with peripherals by means of programmed I/O, and with the host computer by Direct Memory Access (DMA) and a serial RS232 link. This thesis addresses both the hardware and software aspects of the controller design.

This paper presents the background and procedures leading to development of a simulation model to analyze the impact of certain decision variables on operational system performance and workloads as the repair facility of a typical Navy field site. The research examines the impact of maintenance support concepts, as implemented by changes in the decision variables, associated with the broader application of Automatic Test Equipment. The initial effort consisted of data collection and field site surveys which culminated in defining a work flow model illustrating typical repair facility operations. The work flow model is translated into a computer simulation model. The baseline model contains all the values for failure rates, delay times, and probability decision parameters derived from the available data. The simulation model is then exercised and the output data recorded for comparison with historical data to validate the model and provide a baseline for comparison as the decision parameters are varied. Of the variables exercised, it appears that the Built-in-Test (BIT), or Self-test capability, is one of the more important design considerations in the original operating systems.

It provides an overview of military training simulation and a review of instructional problems and challenges which can be addressed by AI. The survey includes current as well as potential applications of AI, with particular emphasis on design and system integration issues. Applications include knowledge and skills training in strategic planning and decision making, tactical warfare operations, electronics maintenance and repair, as well as computer-aided design of training systems. The report describes research contributions in the application of AI technology to the training world, and it concludes with an assessment of future research directions in this area.
