Gis Based Tsunami Inundation Maps / Case Studies From Mediterranean

In this thesis, detailed tsunami numerical modeling study was applied to the selected case studies, Fethiye town (Turkey) and Kiparissia-Zakintos-Pylos (Greece) in Mediterranean, using rupture-specific tsunami sources which can generate tsunamis in Mediterranean. As a first step of the study, the general database of Fethiye and Kiparissia-Zakintos-Pylos were integrated to GIS-based environment to organize, analyze and display reliable data from different sources. Secondly, for each earthquake scenario, the tsunami propagation and coastal amplifications were computed by TUNAMI N3 to evaluate the coastal amplifications of tsunamis and understand the tsunami propagation for the cases. As the final step, a study of inundation areas of probable tsunamis in these regions was performed. Available results were used to understand the effects of tsunamis and assist in developing mitigation strategies. Methods and results were presented and discussed.

Evaluation And Comparison Of The Wave Energy Potential In Selected Coastal Regions In Turkey

In order to meet energy needs in world, studies on wave energy, alternative energy, are becoming more and more important with each passing day. The purpose of this study is to identify the wave energy potential along the coastline of Turkey. For this purpose, the data of wind speed and direction, swell and wind wave height, period and direction for certain duration with the six hours time intervals are obtained from ECMWF for the wind and wave climate computations. In order to compute the wind and wave climate at any selected coastal location, software is developed by Serhan Aldogan in his MSc thesis. By the help of the specifically developed software, for every location, by utilizing existing wind data, depending on geographical location of station, in the direction of energy thought to produce, by using calculated average wind speed of storm which is above the selected wind speed u0, characteristics (Hs / Tm) of the waves of this storm and power (P, W/m) per unit length will be calculated. The duration curves for power, Hs and T, can be obtained. The duration curve represents the occurrence of the parameter (wave height, wave period, wave energy or wave power). It can also be called occurrence curve or availability curve. From these curves, for various percentages of the total storm duration, P, Hs and T&rsquo / s values can be determined. Also, in the analysis, the shapes of these curves can provide important information about the available wave energy for the selected coasts.

Numerical Modeling Of Re-suspension And Transport Of Fine Sediments In Coastal Waters

In this thesis, the theory of three dimensional numerical modeling of transport and re-suspension of fine sediments is studied and a computer program is develped for simulation of the three dimensional suspended sediment transport. The computer program solves the three dimensional advection-diffusion equation simultaneously with a computer program prepared earlier for the simulation of three dimensional current systems. This computer program computes the velocity vectors, eddy viscosities and water surface elavations which are used as inputs by the program of fine sediment transport. The model is applied to Bay of Izmir for different wind conditions.

The Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD) is established as an advisory body within the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) framework, in order to provide advice on programs and prepare recommendations for the Contracting Parties. The MCSD identifies and evaluates major economic, environmental and social problems specified in Agenda MED 21. It aims to track the implementation of the proposals it submits to the Contracting Parties. Furthermore, the MCSD is open to participation from the main groups of the society, which have equal footing alongside government representatives. Within the limits imposed upon it, the MCSD provides a regional forum for dialogue and a promising framework for defining a regional sustainable development strategy in the Mediterranean. Its regional nature and its composition constitute an innovative contribution to promote the integration of environmental concerns in development policies. The object of this study is to evaluate the work that has been carried out by MCSD and understand the complex structure of an institution through which international and regional cooperation and coordination is achieved.

Wind And Wind Wave Climate For Turkish Coast And Application To Aegean And Mediterrenean Sea

The wind waves have significant effects on small craft and fisheries. Therefore, wind wave climate has an important role in the design and operation of fishing harbors and harbors for small craft. The purpose of this study is to identify the wind wave climate along the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea coastline of T&uuml / rkiye. For this purpose, wind wave data for a certain period is obtained from ECMWF for the analysis. Moreover, the data will be analyzed for locations selected along the Turkish coast using a special software developed for this thesis study. For every location, the wind wave roses, significant wind wave height versus mean period of primary wind relations, extreme probability distribution, and log-linear cumulative probability distributions will be presented. By the help of software developed, it will be possible to analyse any coordinate using ECMWF data.

Database Development For Tsunami Warning System In Mediterranean Basin By Tsunami Modeling

Wider awareness, proper preparedness and effective mitigation strategies need better understanding of tsunamis and tsunami hazard assessment. Tsunami assessment study covers the exchange and enhancement of available earthquake and tsunami data, development of bathymetric and topographic data in sufficient resolution, selection of possible or credible tsunami scenarios, selection and application of the valid and verified numerical tools for tsunami generation, propagation, coastal amplification, inundation and visualization. From this point of view, this thesis deals with all these components of tsunami hazards assessment. The database of 38 different seismic sources is generated and applied to Eastern Mediterranean Basin by using numerical code called NAMI DANCE. Furthermore, the simulation results are compared and discussed. In the thesis, the difficulties in defining seismic source parameters, the effect of dip and rake (slip) angle on seismic generated tsunamis are evaluated. Moreover, the performance of the numerical code, the accuracy of results, the efficiency of the numerical methods in the application to Mediterranean Basin Tsunamis and the comparisons of simulations in nested domains for Bodrum, Kas and Iskenderun are given as case studies. According to the study, north-west and south-west of Turkey may have tsunami risk more than other regions. The maximum wave amplitudes, which may be expected to occur near the shore, are found more than 4 m. However, maximum positive wave amplitude observed in history is approximately 8 m. The arrival time of first wave to hit the coasts vary in a range of 15 to 60 minutes depending on the closeness of the location to the sources&rsquo / epicenter.

Comparison Of Dispersive And Non-dispersive Numerical Long Wave Models And Harbor Agitation

In this study, the evolution of the numerical water wave models with the theoretical background and the governing equations are briefly discussed and a numerical model MIKE21 BW which can be applied to wave problems in nearshore zone is presented. The numerical model is based on the numerical solution of the Boussinesq type equations formulated on time domain. Nonlinearity and frequency dispersion is included in the model. In order to make comparison between the results of nonlinear shallow water equations with Boussinesq terms, MIKE21 BW and NAMIDANCE are applied to the problem of wave propagation in the long distances and runup on simple and composite slopes. The numerical experiments are applied to Dat&ccedil / a Marina and the results are compared to the results of the physical experiments on wave disturbance in Dat&ccedil / a Marina. In these comparisons the reflection characteristics of different coastal boundaries in the harbor area are tested and the internal parameters in the model are calibrated accordingly. The numerical model MIKE21 BW is applied to skenderun harbor as a case study. The input wave parameters are selected from the wave climate study for Iskenderun Harbor. The model is set up and the agitation inside the harbor is computed according to four different incoming wave scenarios. The disturbance maps inside the harbor for different incoming wave scenarios are obtained. The critical regions v of the harbor according to disturbance under different wave conditions are presented and discussed.

Development Of A Web Gis-based Tsunami Inundation Mapping Service / A Case Study For Marmara Sea Region

Tsunamis, as the catastrophic disasters, can cause loss of live and property when they come to the shores. Preparation of emergency plans is essential to reduce the damage. Consequently, any initiative in tsunami modeling and inundation mapping is of vital importance for progressing safety surveillance and maintenance. In an effort to achieve a thorough analysis of effect of tsunami, it is critical to estimate the geographical extent of possibly affected area and to predict tsunami impacts. The inundation mapping system also must serve to manage the simulation data in a scalable environment to reach end-users in the time of event. For this purpose, in this study, the generation of a Web based Geographic Information System (GIS) to serve inundation maps through web. The research methodology consists of four main stages: (i) simulating tsunamis based on six different scenarios (ii) processing simulation data through a GIS application / (iii) development of web interfaces and implementation of the developed model for Web-GIS application / (iv) verification of the created model for Marmara Sea Region. The proposed system is expected to be an efficient tool for improving inundation mapping efforts for expected tsunamis in Turkey.
