Characteristics of the subsidence inversion over the eastern North Pacific Ocean north of the 48th parallel

Average characteristics of subsidence inversions associated with the Pacific High have only been documented for areas along the U.S. West Coast and over the tropical eastern North Pacific Ocean. This study, which is based on 3414 upper-air soundings for June through September of 1964 and 1965, shows the average summer season characteristics of the inversion from Tatoosh Island, Washington northward along the coast of the Gulf of Alaska. A comparison is also made with the subsidence inversion found over the eastern North Pacific Ocean from Johnston Island (17°N, 168.5°W) to Ocean Station PAPA (50°N, 145°W). Some of the more notable findings are: (a) a diurnal oscillation of the height of the inversion base exists, except in the regions of Yakutat and Anchorage, Alaska; (b) the height of the inversion increases with increasing latitude from Tatoosh Island to Anchorage; (c) the inversion thickness decreases from Tatoosh Island to Anchorage; (d) subsidence inversions are most pronounced over the California coast compared to any other location between Johnston Island and Anchorage. / Graduation date: 1978

Measurement of turbulent fluctuations of wind temperature and humidity to determine the momentum, sensible heat and latent heat surface fluxes were made in Bimini Island, in April - May 1971 over Grand Bahamas Banks. The temperature spectralshape and WT cospectral shape showed strong time dependency. The temperature and humidity turbulent fluxes were dissimilar some of the time as in the case of B.O.M.E.X. Esses coecientes são estimados por meio de um método inverso, cuja qualidade não é facilmente certicada, ou seja não existe um diagnóstico sistemático da qualidade das estimativas. Neste trabalho um método inverso com sólidas bases estatísticas é proposto, para recuperar os mesmos coecientes. O algoritmo proposto oferece vantagens comparada com o método atual em uso pelo grupo, pois: (1) possibilita a incorporação de diferentes tipos de informações de fontes heterogêneas durante a inversão. E (2) o método permite diversos tipos de diagnósticos quanto a qualidade do processo de inversão e do parâmetro recuperado. Temperature inversions in the boundary layer over Prague Abstract The main objective of this study is to analyze temperature inversions in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over Prague. In the first part, the concept of the ABL is defined and main theoretical aspects of air stratification are explored. The main part of the background research summarizes current knowledge of temperature inversions, especially how the landscape pattern influences their development and parameters under different synoptic situations, and methods used for their detection, measurement and evaluation. Considering the theme of the thesis, main geographic factors influencing temperature inversions in the area of Prague are also defined. The focus of actions is placed on inversions analysis based upon time series of Praha-Libuš rawinsonde station. Homogeneity of used data is tested and all inversions within the 2000- meters-thick-layer close to the ground are derived. Diurnal, annual and interannual frequency variations are described. Factors influencing the structures of the Monterey Bay sea breeze

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / The Monterey Bay sea breeze varies because of the influence of features such as inversions, clouds, synopticscale flow, and topography. The sea breeze is important because it impacts fire weather, air pollution, agriculture, and aviation operations, among other things. Analyses are conducted using a multi-quadric based program, which incorporates aircraft data, surface observations, and profiler data, to investigate the Monterey Bay sea breeze during 01-31 August 2003. Factors including inversions, cloud cover, amount of heating, distribution of heating, synoptic-scale flow, and topography are studied to determine their influence on the sea breeze. Six days are selected that best illustrate the factors that influence the structure of the Monterey Bay sea breeze. Results show that offs hore flow weakened the strength of the sea breeze and decreased the depth. A cooling trend in surface temperatures at the end of August also weakened the strength of the sea breezes and decreased the depth. Clouds are present during this period, which influenced the amount of heating, and consequently, the sea breeze response. The presence of a marine layer weakened the thermal gradient that in turn, weakened the sea breeze circulation. / Lieutenant Junior Grade, United States Naval Reserve
