Confining Women| The Physical World of Machinal

Lin, Xiyu 15 June 2018 (has links)

In order to understand the world of Machinal, I researched the Snyder-Gray trial that inspired Sophie Treadwell to write the piece. This trial, in which a seemingly innocuous housewife was accused of conspiring with her lover to murder her husband, was a springboard to create the drama titled Machinal. The analysis of the Ruth Snyder case revealed a disguised misogyny that would be reflected in my scenic design, which depicts the world of Helen, grappling with her husband for freedom under the societal expectations of women. In the background, the ever-present typists sit on a platform looking down upon the stage, effectively blocking Helen’s exits. Recording her life in real time, they represent the prevailing public opinions that influenced Helen’s decisions. Trapped downstage, the bed was the only place where Helen could hide or protect herself from social pressures; it symbolized both her sanctuary and her prison. My scenic design created a simple but effective world to tell the story of Machinal, emphasizing the concept that, although Helen was freed by death, social oppression and discrimination against women persists to the present day.

In the Penal Colony

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT "In the Penal Colony" is a three-act play based on the original short story by Franz Kafka and adapted by ASU MFA playwright Christian Krauspe. Told in flashback-form; a lone female Traveler arrives at a nameless penal colony where she is asked to comment on an old execution device known simply as, "the apparatus." She is pressured by the colonies administration to condone the practice while simultaneously asked to endorse the machine by her guiding officer in hopes of preserving the mystical powers the apparatus seems to possess. The Traveler must make the choice to endorse or condone the machine while she faces her own demons in the process. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.F.A. Creative Writing 2011

Relationships in the modern French theatre.

Lee, Vera,1923- January 1962 (has links)
Abstract: p. i-xi. Vita. Thesis (Ph. D.)--Boston University. Includes bibliography. / Because of the great emphasis placed on a need for a unity and harmony of all the relationships within the French theatre, an emphasis that has continued since the early part of this century to the present time, I have undertaken to analyze the nature of these associations, in an attempt to assess their significance for the present and future of the French theatre. Atte·r having provided an historical sketch of French theatre relationships since the Middle Ages, I began this study with an examination of the problem of the author and the director in the modern French theatre. It was seen that a schizm between these two elements exists in theory and practice, that conflicting ideals of a theatre geared to the author or one that is a vehicle for the director have been and continue to be represented by certain "animateurs," and that it is indeed the director who determines which of these two factors will have the primary stress in his theatre.
