Studies in the biosynthesis of the hormones of the thyroid gland.

Wilson, Brian Denis 16 April 2020 (has links)
This project was undertaken in order to elucidate two important problems in Thyroid Biochemistry namely, the kinetics of labelling of tyrosine and monoiodotyrosine (MIT) and the pathways of synthesis of triiodothyronine (T3 ) and thyroxine (T4 ).

Actions of thyroid hormone on myocardial contractility in the intact animal

Lubbe, Wilhelm Frederick 08 April 2020 (has links)
The central role of the mammalian heart in the circulation was recognised by Nei Chung when he wrote in his Third Book of the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine (2698 - 2598 B.C.): Treatise on the Five Viscera in Relation their part in Perfecting Life, "The Heart is in accord with the pulse. The complexion of a person shows when the heart is in a splendid condition. The heart rules over the kidneys. . . . . . . . The importance of assessing the functional state of the heart was realised even by the early Egyptian physicians in the 17th Century B.C. as described in the Ebers Papyrus:- "The begining of the physician, secret : knowledge of the heart's movements and knowledge of the heart. There are vessels from it to every limb. As to this, when any physician, any surgeon, or any exorcist applies the hands or his fingers to the head, to the back of the head, to the hands to the place of the stomach, to the arms or to the feet, then he examines the heart, because all his limbs possess its vessels, that is, the heart speaks out of the vessels of every limb".

Quality assessment of thyroid ultrasound and implementation of a standard reporting template to be used in training hospitals

Classens, S January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Medicine in the branch of Diagnostic Radiology, Johannesburg, 2017 / Ultrasound is the conventional and best imaging modality used to visualize the thyroid and thyroid-related disease. An adequate ultrasound report can significantly influence clinicians in making management decisions in these patients. Aim: The aim of this study was to critically assess the quality of thyroid ultrasound reports generated at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH), a training hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. Method: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed. The quality of thyroid ultrasound reports was determined by using a data collection sheet that included items that should be contained in a thyroid ultrasound report. The contents of the data collection sheet was guided by current literature (including Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TIRADS); Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer Foundation (THANC); American Thyroid Association guidelines (ATA), British Thyroid Association guidelines (BTA) and the Society for Endocrine, Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa (SEMDSA)). The data collection sheet was designed by the principal investigator and supervisors. The quality of reports of training radiologists, sonographers as well as qualified radiologists were documented. Comparisons of the quality of reports was made between the above groups of reporters. / XL2018

STUDIES ON THE ROUTE OF SYNTHESIS OF THE THYROID HORMONE

Fawcett, David M. 10 1900 (has links)
Certain aspects of the biochemistry of the thyroid gland have been studied. The techniques of filter paper chromatography and radioautography were used to separate and identify the iodine-containing amino acids of the gland, and were modified somewhat, in order to obtain reliable results. Although a series of preliminary experiments were performed with the thyroid glands of rats in vivo, the main part of this work made use of the in vitro technique. Surviving tissue slices were incubated in the presence of the radioactive tracer, iodine131. Evidence was obtained which indicated that at least two of the amino acids found "free" in the thyroid gland were degraded by the gland to inorganic iodide. The mechanism of action of a number of thyroid gland inhibitors was investigated. It was found that all but two of the materials studied led to the formation in the tissue slices of unidentified iodine—containing materials with the simultaneous disappearance of inorganic iodide. Hence, at least a part of the goitrogenic nature of these inhibitors would appear to be due to the "removal" of iodide. It was found chat one portion of the inhibition caused by 3 - fluorotyrosine could be "reversed" in vitro with tyrosine, interesting sex variations in thyroid gland activity were observed during these experiments. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)
