High-resolution multi-stage time-to-digital converters. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

Time-to-digital converters (TDC) are one type of such measurement systems, which convert the arrival time difference between two input pulses into digital codes. TDCs find various applications in high energy particle detectors, laser range finders, digital storage oscilloscopes, also in all-digital phase lock loops. Since the performance of a TDC greatly affects the performance of the overall system, it attracts a great deal of research efforts. / TDCs based on delay elements are currently dominant compared to other analog-circuit-intensive implementations, because of their design simplicity and that their resolution is inherently enhanced by technology advancement. However, there are challenges on designing high-resolution delay-line-based TDCs. First, when the full scale of the TDC is increased, the number of delay cells (basic time measurement units) have to be increased exponentially, which greatly increases the power consumption. Even worse, when the number of delay cells increases, circuit noises and mismatch-induced nonlinearity from each cell accumulate along the chain and worsen the resolution and linearity of the TDC. Besides, the achievable finest resolution (i.e., the least significant bit, LSB) of the delay-line-based TDCs is limited by the minimum delay of the delay cells, which is process-dependent. Although a number of methods are proposed previously to improve the time resolution beyond the process restriction, there are shortcomings on those architectures, for example, the increase of delay elements needed for generating refined time reference. / In this thesis, we focus on the design of high resolution TDCs. First, to decrease the number of delay elements in the TDC, a two-stage Vernier Parallel Delay Line (VPDL) based TDC is proposed. By cascading two sets of parallel delay lines with slightly difference in resolution, the overall resolution of the TDC is much finer than that of the two sets. By using the first stage delay line as the time reference of the coarse TDC, the number of delay elements is greatly reduced when compared to single stage ones. Besides that, the VPDL makes the delay step sizes similar between stages utilizing Vernier principle, which relaxes the step size requirement of the delay elements, also facilitating design re-use of delay cells among two stages. / Second, to improve the linearity and offset problems in the proposed TDC architecture, a foreground calibration scheme is proposed. By making the delay cells discretely-tunable with equal step, a digital feedback loop can be formed to tune the delay/ measure the step size of each step, then tune the delay of each cell according to the information. The proposed scheme uses the discretely-tunable delay steps to tune the delay, also as the reference of calibration, so no accurate timing signal is needed from internal/external of the TDC. This simplifies the calibration process. / Third, a behavioral modeling approach is proposed to provide a quick way for system design and functional verification. 'Watching with mother' : how film stars are utilized in mother-daughter relations

This research presents the processes and findings of an interdisciplinary study of mothers’ and daughters’ shared relations to film stars. Principally grounded within the cultural studies tradition of investigating the role of media in everyday life, the research explores the intergenerational transmission of film star tastes and preferences between mothers and daughters, building upon existing literature from the fields of star studies, family sociology, memory studies and audience research. It also takes a new perspective on the study of audiences for stars from the work of art anthropologist Alfred Gell, who posited the notion that the study of art should concern its ‘practical mediatory role’ within social interactions. The research was conducted by means of an empirical audience study of paired mother-daughter dyads of varying ages, class backgrounds and social circumstances, and was carried out in two phases: a preliminary online survey which recruited 92 mother-daughter pairs; and 16 follow-up telephone interviews with selected mothers and daughters. The first phase utilized quali-quantitative methods of analysis to explore various models of mother-daughter-star relations, while the second phase used a combined analytical approach that coupled an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis approach with elements of memory studies to further investigate those identified dyadic models. An overarching finding of the thesis is that film stars perform varying, but also evolving, functions within mother-daughter relationships depending upon the socio-demographic make-up of the dyad. Other more specific findings include: that class identifications are a key determinant in mother-daughter shared gender preferences in regard of admired stars, and that in mother-daughter relationships where there is a greater distance in their age gap, mothers specifically carve out shared times between the pair, using film stars as a common resource which provides a communicative coinage within their relations.

The Transmediation of Journey to the West into a board Game

China is a cultural and economic giant in today’s world, but has been somehow misunderstood in the past decades . With more and more educational and economic communication between China and the western world, more non-Chinese people find a need to know China. This project has created a board game based on Journey to the West, a 2000-page novel which is one of the four great classical novels in China. The project seeks to transmit some of the cultural aspects of China, stimulate people’s interest in China through simple gameplay. The ultimate goal of this project was to develop a game which was fun for friends and families to play together, as well as to offer a relaxing and pleasant play space for people to experience a different culture without extensive reading. The paper explains the research that has been done to realize the project, Journey to the West: the Board Game, and the production expectation. A study has been done behind the project explored the game’s mechanics, appeal and effectiveness. The paper also details the results of this study to determine if players of this board game learn about Chinese culture more than readers of the book.

The impact of international trade in healthcare services under GATS on the right to health : a study of medical tourism in India

Healthcare services, traditionally provided by the government in a welfare state, have become a tradable commodity in the era of globalisation. Indeed, globalisation has led to the creation of a new international healthcare market with increased participation of the private sector, assisted with enhanced mobility of health professionals, service providers and patients across borders. Soon after its inception, the 1995 General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) has come under fire from critics, especially for its broad scope and inclusion of basic services like healthcare, water or education that fulfil social objectives. In establishing a multilateral legal framework, GATS mandates progressive liberalisation of trade in services among the WTO members through successive rounds of negotiations. Since GATS applies to the measures by WTO Members affecting trade in services (whether taken at central, regional or local government level), inclusion of health services therein has raised concern regarding a government's ability to regulate health-related services. Availability and accessibility of healthcare services is crucial from the right to health perspective. The International Convention on Economic Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) obligates its Member States to respect, protect and realise progressively and to the maximum of its available resources 'the right to the highest attainable standard of health.' When a WTO Member is also a signatory to the ICESCR, the question arises whether the legislative framework regulating healthcare services under GATS conflicts with the said Member's obligation to respect, protect and fulfil the right to health. The present thesis attempts to answer this question through an analysis of GATS and the right to health norms within the framework of conflict of norms in international law. Although norm conflicts are generally assessed in terms of a legal relationship between a given State with another State, the present thesis focuses on a single State bound by both sets of rules where compliance with both obligations may/does lead to a legal, social or factual conflict.
