Sua construção, que levou oito anos para ser concluída, ficou a cargo do engenheiro Ramos de Azevedo que, além do projeto, cuidou da obra até sua finalização. Sua edificação está inserida num conjunto de obras resultante do crescimento acelerado de uma cidade em plena expansão e para viabilizá-Ia, foram necessárias grandes desapropriações e a urbanização de uma ampla área central da cidade. Foi o primeiro monumento deste porte assumido pelo poder público. O majestoso edificio foi inspirado no grande L' Opera, de Paris, projetado por Charles Garnier meio século antes, o que, por si só, conferia-lhe o statusde elegância e bom gosto. Este trabalho recobre o período de 1911-1938, na tentativa de compreender as funções sociais e culturais que o Municipal desempenhou na cidade, recuperando, para isto, a sua principal programação. Dois momentos deste percurso serão enfocados: primeiro, o período em que o Teatro serviu de vitrine para a visibilidade das forças tradicionais da cidade; e, segundo, quando o grupo liderado pelos modernistas pretendeu dar a ele um novo rumo / Abstract: The MunicipalTheatre of São Paulo,inagurated in 1911,wasa response to the paulistanaelite's longingto have their city equiped with a grand opera houseas befitting to it's position in the country, representing an urban centre with the first nationalindustries and coffee barons. Its construction, that took eight years to complete, was undertaken by engineer Ramosde Azevedowho,as wellas beingresponsible for the project, oversawthe buildingwork until its completion.The buildingwas part of a collection of works resulting from the accelerated growth of a city in full expansionand to facilitate it, large areas needed to be dispossessed and a considerable area of the city centre urbanised. It was the first monumentof this scale undertaken by the publicauthorities. The majestic buildingwas inspired by the grand L'Opera in Paris, designed by Charles Garnier half a century earlier, which, in itself, confirmed its status of eleganceand goodtaste. This work r-etraces the period of 1911-1938and, in particular, the theatre's mainprogramme, in an attempt to understand the Municipal'ssocialand cultural functions withinthe city.
