D.Ed. / The research has been done under the leadership of the Rand Afrikaans University with the co-operation of the National Training Board. Apprentice training in South Africa developed from the traditional journeyman route to a more advanced competent modular based training system. The existing competent modular based training for apprentices consists of on the job training, institutional training, offered by an accredited training centre and theoretical training away from the work environment, offered at a Technical College. The existing apprentice training scheme is controlled by legislation (Act No 56 of 1981). The research has been undertaken to determine whether the existing apprentice training scheme complies with the developing needs of the industry and the individual learner. A literature study about the development of the apprentice training system in South Africa is compiled. The study includes an examination of vocational education and training systems of eight different countries. The literature study is compiled to create an holistic picture concerning vocational education and training, focusing on the training of apprentices. Other countries' vocational education and training models are also evaluated to see what South Africa can learn from other countries and to incorporate the transferable strengths to the alternative routes for artisan training developed by this research. With the aid of scientifically designed questionnaires and interviews, the existing apprentice training scheme is examined. The existing training scheme is evaluated against the following criteria: an integrated approach to education and training; effective human resources development according to the technological and manpower, as well as the individual needs; access to artisan training and flexibility of training scheme; recognition of prior learning; career guidance of learners; mobility between industries, employers and institutions, that the training scheme provide; The results of the questionnaires and interviews have shown that the existing apprentice training scheme is outdated and needs to adapt to comply with new challenges for developing competent tradesmen and -women in South Africa. This study addresses the problem surrounding the existing artisan training scheme by developing alternative routes for artisan training. As the results of artisan training should be outcome based. The first step of designing the alternative routes is to formulate the skills and knowledge needed to be a competent artisan. The alternative routes for artisan training is then designed to develop and enhance the skills as formulated.

M.Ed. (Education) / Ever since its inception, the technical college has had the task of providing vocational education. In fact, it would not be incorrect to say that the provision of vocational education to the broad mass of the South African population has always been the raison d'etre of the technical college. The call for our education system to become more relevant and more oriented towards the world of work is becoming increasingly persistent. Consequently the contribution of the technical college towards relevant vocational education has recently been intensively researched in an attempt to establish the following: * its role in the provision of vocational education, and * whether it is in fact equipped to perform this very challenging function, taking into account the economic realities and manpower requirements of South Africa. It has been established beyond any doubt that an educational system which places the emphasis on teaching technical and vocational skills, from the primary to the secondary and tertiary levels, that would lead to meaningful employment, needs to be devised. Various investigations have been carried out, as overseas and different vocational education Urgent attention is being given to vocational. Towards this end locally as well systems studied. Education within the wide education family and all the vocational education experts of the various departments, in conjunction with commerce and industry and other interested parties, are at present fully involved in the joint planning and/or renewal of vocational education in the RSA. The concept of partnership, which has obtained a new meaning in education, has been a logical outcome of all these investigations, simposia, conferences and talks. Apart from the natural partnership of education, which include the organised teaching profession and the parent community, a new and powerful partnership is developing which includes the private as well as the public sector. A study· into the role and function of all the parties in this partnership has established that each partner has a particular place, role and function to fulfil in order to achieve a common goal, namely the provision of a relevantly trained manpower for South Africa. This study has made it abundantly clear that the contribution of each partner towards education and training is of vital importance and that not one of them can afford it any longer to remain uninvolved in vocational education which has become a national priority. The study has furthermore identified the technical college as a very significant partner in this partnership, along with the schools, the technikon, the university and the various training boards.

M.Ed. / There is a great need for technical artisans in South Africa. Unfortunately the previous educational dispensation did not do much to remedy the situation, and now education, especially in the technological field, suffers a crisis as far as credibility, provision and relevance are concerned. Technology is changing every day, and to keep up to date, one must realise that learners do not choose technical subjects at school, or for that matter, do not pursue a career in technology. A qualitative approach was followed, interviews conducted at selected schools, and the result analysed to find out what the perceptions of learners are for not choosing technical subjects. The data yielded four categories, namely experience, ambition, status and technology. It seems that past experiences of parents cause learners not to go into technical careers for the perception exists that it entails is called "dirty work"; these jobs also have no status and learners would prefer to pursue university careers. Some recommendations are made, one being that the government of the day should take up the responsibility to get involved to make the technological field more attractive to prospective job seekers. Better salaries, especially for teachers, upgrading of schools and technical centres, better job opportunities and fighting perceptions of prejudice might solve this problem.

The influence of marketing communication on students' decisions to enrol at Technical Vocational Education and Training colleges in KwaZulu-Natal

However, little research has been done on marketing Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in South Africa. Evidence suggests that it may suffer from a lack of expertise to provide direction to the practical aspects of marketing TVET Colleges. Most of the marketing practices of Higher Education are underdeveloped and lack a strategic focus when it comes to Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET). For TVET Colleges marketing communication plays an important role in students’ recruitment. The aim of this study is to analyse the influence of marketing communication towards students’ decisions to enrol at Technical Vocational Education and Training Colleges (TVET). The objectives of this study is to determine factors that influence students in the selection of a TVET College. Additionally, the study strives to identify students’ perceptions towards TEVT Colleges, and investigate marketing communication practices that contributes toward improving students’ perceptions at TVET. The study was conducted in KwaZulu-Natal where the targeted TVET colleges are based. This is a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study conducted among a sample of 400 TVET College students. Data was analyzed using SPSS. The results of this study reveal the need for marketing communication in TVET Colleges to be addressed urgently in order to improve public perception and enrolment rates at TVET Colleges. Both students and TVET Colleges will benefit from the study because marketing and communication as a source of information will assist when selecting a college of choice. In addition, this will also assist TVET Colleges in the selection of appropriate marketing communication media to enable proper allocation of marketing budget and resources The findings of this study will then act as guidelines to determine a more appropriate marketing communication strategy to improve the public perceptions of TVET Colleges to make TVET Colleges a students’ first choice. / M

M.Ed. (Tertiary and Adult Education) / The technical teacher often enters the teaching profession via industry. He/she comes to realise that, because he/she is professionally unqualified, the posibilities for the development of his/her career are extremely limited. since 1986 the College of Education of South Africa has made provision for these teachers by offering a course that enables them to gain admission to a Higher Diploma in Education. The study showed that the adult learner differs from the typical bridging course student. Among other things, the CESA bridging course student differs in respect of age and finality of vocational choice, and generally has no particular academic needs requiring academic support. The technical teacher as a bridging course student receives no academic support; neither is he/she offered any course to compensate for underachievement or educational deprivation. The connotation in the term bridging course leads to comparisons with traditional bridging courses, and a change of name for the existing course would be advisable. The bridging course covers the acquisition of additional techical qualifications, thus complying with the reguirements for admission to a Higher Diploma in Education (Technical) . The empirical investigation revealed that these teachers are to a large extent academically under-qualified, almost 74% of them have not been promoted at all, with only 8,2% being granted a single promotion to post level 2. From the research it appears that the bridging course student's course should be adapted in such a way that its completion will enable the teacher to complete both his/her technical and professional qualifications simultaneously. After the successful completion of the course a Teachers Diploma should be awarded.

M.Ed. / Education in South Africa assumes that all learners should have access to effective teaching, so that inequalities can be eliminated and the skills of all learners be optimally developed. It is of cardinal importance that career guidance in schools attempt to maintain a balance between the technological demands of the world of work and the needs of each unique individual learner. Technology Education involves a radical change in the approach to education. It moves away from giving students a set body of knowledge, to a style of creating a wide range of learning activities. One such learning activity is problem-solving which teach learners to think for themselves and provides them with the skills and experiences in researching, designing and evaluating knowledge. Teachers become facilitators and work together with and help learners to reach successful outcomes and competencies. In recent research by the Curriculum 2005 Initiative (1997) in the field of career guidance, the emphasis has been placed on enabling learners to access career and other opportunities and to set goals which will enable them to make the best use of their full potential and talents. It is stated clearly that it has become imperative for education and the world of work to forge closer co-operation in order to prepare the learners for their future working lives and life-long learning prospects. The world of work changes from time to time. There is a need to continuously develop human resources to meet the demands of a growing economy and the needs of all people in the country. An effective career guidance programme is therefore essential in linking the needs of the country with the aspirations, abilities and skills of learners. The research in this study focuses primarily on career guidance in a technologically stimulating school environment. The secondary aims are to investigate the effectiveness of the career guidance teacher, the correlation between the possible influence of the career guidance teacher in grade 11 and 12, and the correlation between learners with Mathematics and Science and their study and career choices. A questionnaire with both open and closed questions was given to grade 12 learners to complete. The questionnaire was validated during a pilot study. The following interesting results were gathered: the aspects that mostly influenced the learner's subject, study and career choice are their interest and love for the subject; there is a correlation between the effectiveness of the guidance teacher and the teaching aids he or she uses in promoting careers; there is a positive correlation between the influence of the guidance teacher in grade 11 and his/her influence in grade 12. there is a correlation between learners with Mathematics and their eventual career choices. This study confirms the importance and influence of career guidance and highlights the reasons and choices which are made by learners regarding careers.

The problem of relevance in educational provision in Kwazulu-Natal

The overall aim of the study was to study the relevance of educational provision in KwaZulu-Natal. There have been no vocationally orientated alternatives available in the schools of this province. The poor performance of our matriculants results in wide-spread media coverage. A further consideration in the formulation of the aims of this study was the decline in the socio-economic development of this province. It was postulated that the problems of high youth unemployment were related to the perceived irrelevance of educational provision. A basic needs approach for human development was adopted as the theoretical foundation for the study. The aims included a comparative examination of a selection of international systems of education from high and low-income economies of the world. Primary analysis was vis-a-vis a historical, legal, socio-economic, and structure of education analytical framework .. The secondary analysis was visa- vis a framework that included trends, critical issues and anticipated future developments or reforms in education. The analytical framework was applied stringently through-out the study. Consequently the data reduction process was cyclical and on-going. Data gathering process was done by means of a process of document collection supplemented by interviews with stakeholders and educators. Two questionnaires were designed for implementation at a critical stage of the study .. These two surveys focused on critical areas of relevant education in the region. Data reduction took place systematically the context of Chapters 3, 4 and 5. The emerging themes were concluded in a final summarising chapter. The findings indicated that the problems of relevance in KwaZulu-Natal were linked to a fragmented historical past. The perpetuation of irrelevance in education was however, associated with neo-ideological considerations. The study suggested that the provincial education department did not have the capacity to provide relevant education. A decline has taken place in the standards of education in the public school sector. The strength of the private sector of this province was concluded to be a factor of relevance. Instrumental enrichment in a technical high school for disadvantaged adolescents: a pilot evaluation

Johannesburg, 1994 / In the light of deficits in the Black Education system, historically entrenched by the ruling political hegemony. Black education has been severely compromised in S.A. ln an attempt to redress the situation CEFSA, a non-governmental organisation, has set up a technical high school for adolescents, founded on the principles of Fcuersteins Instrumental Enrichment Programme. Five Instruments were taught in 1992. This study is an evaluation of the changes in the students over the year on dimensions of Cognitive Processes, Learning Styles, Creativity and Self-esteem. Changes were related to both the FIE programme, as well as to broader Mediated Learning Experience opportunities both within and outside the school. N = 114. Statistical procedures included a range of descriptive statistics, a stepwise regression and a principal components analysis. Results indicated that changes on the above dimensions occurred in both positive and negative directions. T-tests highlighted significant changes. Demographic variables were use to explain these changes in a stepwise regression procedure. Competence on Instruments were found to be significantly positively related to end of year academic results, irrespective of demographic variables. The Influences of the IE intervention were then discussed, both positive and negative in an attempt to gain understanding of future directions to be taken in teaching thinking skills within a rapidly changing socio-political context.
