Fundada no século XVIII, Ouro Preto/MG, exemplo da falta de planejamento e de organização urbana, teve período marcante de decadência econômica, mas ressurgiu economicamente na segunda metade do século XX, passando a conviver com problemas que não a importunavam antes. A falta de opção para novas moradias, as limitações físicas do núcleo histórico e o crescimento econômico e populacional determinaram a busca de espaços e provocaram dispersão da área urbana, o que forçou a utilização de meios de transporte motorizados. O resultado é um ambiente conturbado e impróprio, pois as características urbanas impõem limites ao modelo de mobilidade predominante: utilização de automóveis e de ônibus para transporte coletivo que provocam danos à qualidade de vida da população e ao patrimônio cultural e estrangulamento nas apertadas ruas da cidade. Com o objetivo de propor um meio alternativo de transporte, sustentável e adequado às condições topográficas, este trabalho discute temas que se interligam: uso e ocupação do solo, características específicas da cidade, proteção e preservação do patrimônio cultural e, prioritariamente, necessidade de locomoção da população entre as duas regiões mais populosas. Assim, indica a construção de um teleférico, mecanismo que funciona em outras cidades como meio de transporte de massa e pode ligar o núcleo histórico ao Campus da Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (UFOP), com reflexos positivos no meio ambiente, na qualidade de vida e na proteção ao patrimônio cultural e diminuição do uso de automóveis e de ônibus, além de ser um atrativo turístico para os milhares de visitantes que procuram a cidade. ________________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: The process of urbanization that occurred in Brazil, mostly from the 1970s, with rapid growth of cities, was not accompanied, in most cases, by public policies with planning and implementation of the necessary infrastructure, resulting in impacts and problems that plague the population. Founded in the eighteenth century, Ouro Preto / MG, is an example of the lack of planning and urban organization , it had a remarkable period of economic decline, but revived economically in the second half of the twentieth century, and started living with problems that had not existed before. The lack of options for new housing, the physical limitations of the historic core and the economic and population growth led to the search of spaces and caused dispersion of the urban area, forcing the use of motorized transport. The result is a troubled and improper environment because urban characteristics impose limits to the predominant model of mobility: use of cars and buses for public transportation has caused damage to the quality of life and cultural heritage and strangulation in its narrow city streets. In order to propose an alternative means of transport, sustainable and appropriate to topographical conditions, this work discusses issues are intertwined: the use and occupation of land, specific features of the city, protection and preservation of cultural heritage and priority need for travel population between the two most populous regions. Thus, indicates the construction of a cable car mechanism that works in other cities as a means of mass transport and can connect the historic core to the campus of the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), with positive effects on the environment, quality of life and protection of cultural heritage and reducing the use of cars and buses, as well as being a tourist attraction for thousands of visitors looking the city.
