This thesis is concerned with the FM demodulator techniques used in terrestrial TV receiver designs for Direct Broadcast Systems (DBS) from satellites. The various MAC/Packet schemes intended for DBS applications are described and the international standards that apply to them considered, with particular emphasis on the D2-MAC system. Noise in FM systems is discussed and a suitable threshold noise model is chosen for use in DBS TV demodulator systems. The characteristics of the various types of noise effects are considered in terms of their effect upon the TV picture. The threshold performance of a conventional FM demodulator for differing types of modulation is reviewed and it is shown how the threshold characteristic depends upon the nature of the modulation. The literature review carried out represents a significant component of the thesis and combines material from patent literature with more conventional source materials from professional journals, conferences, textbooks, etc. Some ten existing demodulator concepts that exhibit threshold extension characteristics are examined, and where relevant their potential performance in D2-MAC format systems is assessed. The demodulator characteristics that limit their performance in TV systems are identified. It is concluded that designing a threshold extension demodulator, with reliable operation, for all picture contents and for a wide range of input carrier-to-noise ratios, is a formidable task using existing design techniques. On the basis of this examination an adaptive threshold extension demodulator concept is proposed, that utilises information contained within the signal structure to achieve an improved performance over a wide range of input carrier-to-noise ratios and picture content. It is shown how the relevant signal structures may be derived from conventional (PAL, SECAM and NTSC), MAC format and all-digital television systems. Illustrations are given that show how the adaptive demodulator concept can be applied to certain existing threshold extension demodulators, enhancing their performance for television picture reception. Future trends in all-digital DBS TV systems intended ultimately for DBS applications are briefly discussed together with their demodlilation requirements.

Thesis (Masters Diploma (Technology))--Cape Technikon, Cape Town, 1989 / The document initially describes the operation of the decoder and the production system. Thereafter actual engineering problems are stated and their solutions discussed. The project involves the accurate identification of problem areas on the production line and the systematic solving for each case. Subjects include static electricity pretesting and automatic insertion machine defects. Analysis of these problems provides one with a better perspective towards the production line and its inherent problems. Results and solutions are presented photographically as well as tabulated in the annexure. In some cases, such as defect classification, deductions were concluded that were very different from those initially expected.

This study investigates whether quality management has developed to such an extent that retailers, service repair organisations and consumers are satisfied with product and repair service quality provided by South African manufacturing companies. To investigate these aspects, the colour television industry has been selected because it contains various manufacturing companies of varying sizes and characters, employing different quality policies and performances. It offers relatively standardised products and services, which facilitates intercompany comparisons and employs a simple flow type assembly line process that is representative of other mass production industries. The hypotheses are tested by interviewing four selected populations by means of carefully constructed questionnaires, namely a retail population, a repair service population, a consumer population and a manufacturing population. The empirical results are statistically evaluated in terms of the various manufacturers ability to provide satisfactory product and repair service quality. Consumers and repair service organisations are selected because they represent a broad spectrum of the population with varying, but important opinions on product and repair service quality. Retailers selling colour television receivers are also selected as they play an important role in the management of quality and vary from small independent retailers to large chain stores and discounters. The results obtained from this study show that: • there is a need from the retailers, service repair organisations and consumers for the South African manufacturers to improve the quality of colour television receivers • there is a need by the consumers and the retailers for the manufacturers to improve their repair service quality • there is a need to improve the quality control procedures employed by the colour television manufacturers. / Business Management / D. This study examines the birth of television and the modern media corporation that launched it, through the archives of the designer of the "first" set, John Vassos, a Greek-born American industrial designer, interior decorator, and illustrator (1898-1985). Vassos's early career is used as a case study to analyze the historical and cultural forces that shaped the emergence of this new media and the new profession of industrial design, through archival materials housed in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. and at Syracuse University. Specifically, this thesis unites various parts of Vassos's early career, from his modernist illustrations to industrial design, through the aesthetics and practices of modernism. As RCA's lead industrial designer for over 40 years, Vassos was involved in the design and promotion of RCA's electronic products, including radios and televisions and studio equipment. Vassos also designed the new spaces carved out for their use in the home including the "living room of the future" featured at the 1939 World's Fair. Drawing from his skills as an illustrator, designer and display expert, Vassos helped develop RCA's public image at a time of its greatest expansion in radio and television manufacturing and broadcasting. This reading of Vassos's work is both diachronic, taking into account his work over the early part of his career to analyze his specific contribution and synchronic, in relationship to other designers working contemporaneously. Thus, this thesis explores Vassos's double role as a participant, with active agency within the emergence of the new field and as a subject, constrained by social roles and forces. Ranging from turnstile to the transmitter, Vassos along with other industrial designers used the streamlined aesthetic to create visual unity among mechanical and electronic products, from home to office, from subway to skyline.
