A new system of chemical philosophy was published in 1808, 1810 and 1827, with the aim of disclosing Dalton s atomic theory and reaffirming its basis as well as presenting some answers to the objections which some of his contemporaneous historians made about his ideas. Thus, the first part of this work presents the A new system of chemical philosophy. Besides it discusses some opinions hold by historians of science concerning the uprising of Dalton s atomic theory. The second part, analyses some reasons which would leads Dalton to propose his atomic theory. Finally the third part shows how, or starting from which presupposed, Dalton proposed atomic weights, diameter and volume definitions / O propósito desta dissertação é analisar alguns aspectos da elaboração da teoria atômica de Dalton, focalizando especialmente a sua principal e mais extensa obra, A new system of chemical philosophy.
