O objetivo central foi o de verificar as ideias sobre origem da Terra e da vida de estudantes, bem como as relações entre essas ideias e o desenvolvimento cognitivo dos participantes. Partiu-se da hipótese de que haveria uma relação significativa entre a compreensão do conteúdo da realidade social e as estruturas cognitivas pesquisadas. Para tanto, foi realizado um estudo evolutivo transversal, com a participação de 60 estudantes, matriculados em escolas estaduais, com idades entre 10 e 16 anos, sendo 15 sujeitos de cada uma das seguintes faixas etárias: 10, 12, 14 e 16. A coleta de dados foi feita mediante a aplicação de três instrumentos: uma entrevista clínico-crítica e duas provas operatórias que possibilitam verificar a construção do pensamento operatório formal e da abstração reflexionante. As entrevistas foram analisadas de acordo com os níveis de compreensão da realidade social e as provas operatórias, quanto aos estágios de desenvolvimento cognitivo e de construção das abstrações. Os dados também foram submetidos à análise estatística, por meio do Teste de Verossimilhança. Os resultados confirmaram nossa hipótese e apontaram que, em linhas gerais, a maior parte de nossos participantes apresentou níveis bastante elementares de compreensão sobre a origem da Terra e da vida, recorrendo a explicações mágicas e fantasiosas para resolver o problema das origens. Pretendeu-se, com este estudo, oferecer contribuições ao campo do conhecimento social e do ensino de ciências. / This research is anchored in Jean Piaget Genetic Epistemology, especially within the social knowledge construction about the concept of Earth and life origin. The main objective was to verify the ideas about Earth and life origin of students as well as the relationships between these ideas and the cognitive development of participants. We started from the hypothesis that there would be a significant relationship between the understanding of social and cognitive structures contents surveyed. Therefore, an evolutionary cross study was performed, with the participation of 60 students, aged between 10 and 16 years, been 15 subjects from each of the following age groups: 10, 12, 14 and 16. Data collection was done by applying three instruments: a clinical-critical interview and two operative tests that ascertaining the formal operational thinking construction and reflective abstraction. Interviews were analyzed according to understanding levels of social reality and the operative tests as cognitive development stages and construction of abstractions. Data were statistically analyzed by means of Likelihood Test. Results has confirmed our hypothesis and showed that, in general, most of our participants has very basic levels of understanding about Earth and life origin, using fanciful and magical explanations to solve the origin problem. It was intended, in this study, to provide contributions to the field of social knowledge and Science education.
