Synthesis, Characterization, Application, and Evaluation of Reactive Sizes for Cotton WarpsHamilton, Todd K. 05 December 2001 (has links)
<p>The purpose of this research has been to investigate the weaving properties of cotton yarns treated with three newly developed reactive sizing agents. N-methlyocarbamoylethyl starch, N-methlyocarbamoylethyl starch + poly vinyl alcohol (PVA), and N-methlyocarbamoylethyl starch + PVA + melamine formaldehyde have been studied as durable, non-removable sizing agents. Extensive work has been conducted to accomplish the objectives of the current research. The experimental activities have included: developing new reactive sizes; spinning a range of cotton yarns with three levels of twist multiple; preparing and applying size solution; testing mechanical and physical characteristics of sized yarns to evaluate their weavability; evaluating the stability of the sizing agents in woven structures; and performing statistical analyses to investigate the effect of size type, twist level, and solid concentration in the size bath on several yarn properties. <P>

<p>Micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) comprise a range of technologies that enable the fabrication of micron-sized, solid state devices such as sensors and actuators. MEMS manufacturing technologies enable the development of many exciting micro-scale or micro miniaturized products. This paper presents a decision model for evaluating the potential cost/benefit of different applications of MEMS for textiles. The objective is to determine the feasibility of replacing current warp tension measurement methods with MEMS. In order to accomplish this goal, a literature survey was conducted to document the current economic models and cost justification issues as well as the fundamentals of MEMS. From this survey, decision methodologies were identified and a decision model was established. To establish this model, Microsoft Excel (version Excel 2000) spreadsheet was used as a tool. The results from this model have been used to analyze the feasibility of using MEMS technology in measuring warp tension for textile applications.Finally, conclusions and recommendations for future applications have been covered.<P>

Daily life resembles a textile pattern. Both are built on forever by repeating things. Both transform every second by the effect of chance.The repetition of pattern relaxes us, and the appearance caused by the chance inspires us. Both trigger a chain of imagination in unique harmony. Textile pattern is a medium to express the chance. Any pieces of daily life become a pattern. The pieces of daily life, which are discovered by the “third eye” (different angle than usual), become a point of departure of the chain of imagination. The viewers have freedom to interpret the design in the way they want. They connect their personal memories with the design, which makes the differences in reaction. The story continues to be narrated while transforming its appearance. Storytelling is a succession from designer to viewer, as if to draw a spiral. One day, I took pieces of wood. They had lines on their surface. Each line had a unique shape because they were a part of an annual ring. I saw them like a human fingerprint. There was nothing the same. Daily life as ordinary, but special days. There is nothing the same in a usual day. Pieces of wood are pieces of daily life, it is a point of departure for a chain of imagination. I narrate a story of it in textile pattern. Storytelling pattern is an endless chain of imagination.

This thesis work is concerned with the design and performance analysis of purely textile antenna for wireless applications. The materials used for radiating element, ground plane and dielectric substrate are purely textile. Two types of antennas are studied, the microstrip patch antenna and RFID tag antenna. Each type of antenna is designed and fabricated using two different conductive textile materials as radiating element. The radiating element and ground plane of conventional printed antenna is manufactured with the metal plating on a solid dielectric substrate. The radiating element which is used in this thesis work has different characteristics as compared to printed antenna because it is made of conductive textile material which is less conductive than metal and elastic in nature. Each conductive textile material has different surface resistivity. The study has been made to analyze the effect on gain and radiation efficiency of the antenna when different conductive textile material is used as the radiating element. The measured results of the fabricated antennas present the full potential of conductive textile materials to be used as an antenna.
