Ceramic Sculpture in Prague Interwar Architecture This thesis project from the field of art history is dedicated to the use of ceramic sculpture in the architecture of the first Czechoslovak Republic. It puts an emphasis on so called "national style", which is defined theoretically in the first place and then explained in the context of the artistic development in Czechoslovakia and, more generally, the international art deco current. Separate chapters describe the role of Czech art schools and the significant personality and work of Helena Johnová. The scope of the research is limited to the monuments located in Prague, but it also takes into account important commissions situated outside the city, as well. A catalogue of ceramic sculpture associated with the Prague architecture of the concerned period forms part of the study. Verbal Expressions of Reverence for St. John of Nepomuk in Vilém Bitnar's Saint-John- Questionnaire The goal of this thesis is a description of verbal expressions of reverence (legends, songs, prayers etc.) for St. John of Nepomuk in the Czech lands, which were collected by Výbor svatojanský in the questionnaire edited by Vilém Bitnar. This questionnaire was sent out to Czech and Moravian parishes at the occasion of the 200th anniversary of canonization of St. John of Nepomuk in 1929 and now it is deposited in the Literary Archive of the Museum of Czech Literature in Bitnar's estate. The mutual points in the questionnaire are seeked as well as regional specifics. These are situated into context of trends in religious life in the Czech lands in 1920s in general and also of relationship between contemporary Czech society and the Roman Catholic Church with reverence for St. John of Nepomuk. Bitnar's questionnaire is also situated into context of other Bitnar's scientific and publication activities. This thesis is focused on police techniques of identification of persons used in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1938. The goal of this thesis was to show, how the police identification of persons should look like, in other words which techniques were used by criminologists, how they described them, which accomplishments and negatives they saw in them, who had to be identified and for which purpose. To answer all these questions I deal with political and administrative context of Czechoslovakia, police structure in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1938 and development of criminology, "bertillonage" and documents of identification (especially passports) in the first part of the text, where I mainly use secondary literature. Then I focus on analysis of three main techniques of identification used between 1918 and 1938, namely dactyloscopy, graphology and photography. In this part of the thesis, I use criminology manuals, published in the twenties and thirties. Finally, I work with the fourth technique of identification of persons, namely the description of persons, where I mainly use forms, which are in the criminology manuals. In my diploma thesis "The Development of Urban Build-up Area and Urban Infrastructure in Benešov in the Years 1918 - 1939", I explore one chapter in the development of a small agricultural town during the era of the First Czechoslovak Republic. This thesis is a contribution to the history of Czech towns during the interwar period and its topic corresponds to the research project of the Institute of Economic and Social History at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, within the frame of which I worked on this thesis. The thesis was written mainly based on research of the resources in the State District Archives in Benešov (a branch office of the State Regional Archives in Prague) and of a wide range of relevant specialized literature. The introduction consists of a chapter offering a complex summary of the most important moments and changes in the development of Benešov during the examined period. Apart from the history of Benešov, it also shows the role of the town in the region and the relation of its development to other municipalities in the country. This thesis attempts to use a microhistorical and historical-anthropological approach, based on records from still existing chronicles of the parish of Bohumilice, to reconstruct the everyday life of people in this region in the time period of 1922 - 1948. On the background of great historic events and based on testimonies of individual participants from given region, a colourful tapestry of people's behaviour, actions and perception is being revealed. The thesis is divided into six chapters, in the first one the author specifies the geography, economy and development of administration in the given region, the second chapter follows with history of the centre of the parish, the village of Bohumilice, the local church and school. Chapters three to five deal with the state of chronicle writing in the region. At first a description of all still existing chronicles is given, later follows an outline of records in individual chronicles in the given time period, and finally the personalities of chroniclers are presented. In the sixth chapter the author attempts, based on chroniclers? testimonies, to reconstruct everyday life in the village, the behaviour, actions and primarily the perception of its inhabitants.

Thesis Media reflections on Czechoslovak Legions 1918-1939 analyzes period articles, theater plays and publications dedicated to the participants of the first resistance and describes how the Czechoslovak public was informed about legionaries based on the study of archival materials and the content of analysis. A scrapbook catalog of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the National Archives in Prague, that contains authentic collections of articles about legionaries and the activities of legionary organizations was used as a main source of information. The diploma thesis briefly summarizes the work of the Czechoslovak revolutionary army during the First World War and the development of the press in the Czech lands. A significant part is focused on the popular periodicals called Lidove noviny and Narodni osvobozeni and their articles. It describes the legionary cult and its symbolism. A large part of the thesis describes the person of J. J. Svec. It analyses the first great Czechoslovak film based on his story. Part of the work is based on christianlegion symbols in a time when the separation of the Church and the state was an eminent period topic. It documents how the story was presented to the readers by means of the period articles.

Resource basis for this work will be thee editorially still unprocessed diary parts of librarian, historian and teacher Josef Volf (1878 - 1937) - from the years 1925, 1933 and 1935. Thematically, the work will build on previous bachelor thesis Library of the National Museum in the first half of the 20th century through the eyes of Josef Volf. Now, however, will dela with personalities Josef Volf from the perspective of his teaching at Charles University, and especially at the State Library School. In this connection, will focus on the establishment and functioning of the educational institutions and the general process for creating a library legislation at the beginning of the first Czechoslovak Republic. Volfův diary should help reveal the specific difficulties of implementation of the Law on public libraries, discussions among experts in an informal level and the impact on the field of librarianship and library development and organization after its introduction. In addition, work will reflect the daily work issues, events, insights and finally Joseph Volf relationships with coworkers and acquaintances that are reflected in the records. The presented doctoral thesis deals with the hitherto neglected personality of the Slovak politician Ivan Markovič (1888-1944). The aim of the thesis is to clarify the political activity of Ivan Markovič, to analyze his ideological anchoring and to increase the overall awareness of his person in the context of Czecho-Slovak relations in the first half of the 20th century. The thesis is divided into four chapters and an epilogue, while the individual chapters are devoted to the study of various time and thematic contexts in which Markovič was active. The first chapter introduces the research into the broader context of Czecho-Slovak relations and the background of the first years of Markovič's life. The second chapter examines his work as the founder and editor of the magazine Prúdy in the period before the outbreak of the First World War. The third chapter deals with his activities in the resistance movement abroad during the war. Finally, the fourth chapter deals with the activities of Markovič in the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Worker's Party and his involvement in the top politics of the interwar Czechoslovak Republic. Geoffrey Brown Abstract: In 1919 the Rusyns of Subcarpathian Ruthenia and Rusyn immigrants living in the United States decided that joining the newly-created Czechoslovak Republic offered them the best possible conditions for a stable future. They agreed to the union on the condition that the Rusyns would be granted the widest possible degree of political autonomy, and this autonomy was then guaranteed by the Treaty of Saint Germain signed in September 1919. Once the territory of Subcarpathian Ruthenia had joined Czechoslovakia, the Government in Prague decided that the Rusyn people were incapable of meeting the responsibilities of governing their own territory, since at the end of World War One they had been among the poorest and least culturally developed of all the nations of Austro-Hungary. The Rusyn leaders, particularly the territory's first Governor, Gregory Zhatkovich, protested to no avail against the Czechoslovak government's refusal to grant the Rusyns their legal right to political autonomy. Prior to the war the Czech public had practically no knowledge of Rusyns or their territory of Subcarpathian Ruthenia. The aim of the doctoral thesis is an analysis of the ideas and political activities of Jan Scheinost (1896-1964), a journalist and skilful backstage policymaker who was also known as an ideologist of Czech fascism. The thesis presents and analyses primarily those texts and activities of this controversial personality which were somehow unique, typical or atypical for the Czechoslovak political and intellectual scene of the First and Second Republic, i.e. from the 1920s to the period of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The influential Catholic journalist Scheinost is often connected not only with conservative traditional Catholicism but also with Fascism in academic literature. However, the thesis tries to prove that throughout his career, Jan Scheinost was always mainly looking for the most suitable movement or political party for putting into practice his aggressive Catholic ideas. At the same time the thesis also follows the historical, cultural and media context in which has Scheinost, as the editor in chief of the daily Lidové listy, acted. Scheinost, as a convinced nationalist and Catholic, joined the Czechoslovak People's Party at the beginning of the 1920s, but this party was not conservative enough for him, and he also felt that it made too many compromises.
