Environmental Risks, Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal Axis, and Mental Health Symptomatology in Mexican American Youth: A Two-study ApproachJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: In this dissertation Mexican American (MA) youths environmental risk contexts, HPA axis functioning and mental health symptomatology were investigated in two separate studies. In the first study, environmental risk contexts were examined utilizing a person-centered approach and focusing on MA adolescents' family, peer, and cultural risk factors in fifth grade (N = 750). Environmental contexts were then linked to mental health symptomatology in seventh grade. Results revealed three distinct environmental contexts: Low risk, Moderate risk-language, and High risk-peer. Youth in the High-risk peer context reported the highest levels of symptomatology; greater major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety, conduct disorder (CD)/oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) symptoms than youth experiencing Low risk or Moderate risk-language context. Females, in particular, experiencing the High risk peer context appeared at greatest risk for MDD symptoms. Finally, adolescents in the Moderate risk-language context displayed similar levels of symptoms to the individuals in the Low risk context, with the exception of higher anxiety. This study suggested that MA youth live in unique environmental contexts and these contexts are differentially related to mental health symptomatology. In the second study, 98 MA youth participated in a three-day diurnal cortisol protocol in hopes of linking perceptions of discrimination and HPA diurnal cortisol rhythms. Results revealed that discrimination was related to greater overall cortisol output and marginally related to the cortisol awakening response and evening levels of cortisol. Results suggest that important physiological processes underlie the experiences of discrimination. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Family and Human Development 2011

Man Thinking in the Great CommunityMiller, Anthony James 01 May 2014 (has links)
This thesis is a reading of the role of the individual in the social philosophies of Ralph Waldo Emerson and John Dewey. It seeks to reconstruct both philosophers as putting forth a philosophy of social individualism by putting the two in conversation with one another through the method of Hegelian dialectic. The line of influence from Emerson to Dewey is touched upon, and some time is spent comparing the two scholars in terms of how their philosophies are unique reactions to their experience of America and as Americans. A large part of the thesis is spent in defense of Emerson from contemporary readings that are found to not fully address the complexity of the philosopher, especially how he was reacting to his particular cultural situation.

The Impact of Crustal Magnetic Fields on the Thermal Structure of the Martian Upper AtmosphereCui, J., Yelle, R. V., Zhao, L.-L., Stone, S., Jiang, F.-Y., Cao, Y.-T., Yao, M.-J., Koskinen, T. T., Wei, Y. 02 February 2018 (has links)
Using the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer data, we investigate the possible impact of crustal magnetic fields on the thermal structure of the Martian upper atmosphere. Our analysis reveals a clear enhancement in temperature over regions with strong crustal magnetic fields during two deep dip campaigns covering the periods of April 17-22 and September 2-8, both in 2015. Several controlling factors, such as solar EUV irradiance, relative atomic O abundance, and non-migrating tides, do not help to explain the observed temperature enhancement, and a magnetically driven scenario is favored. We evaluate the roles of several heating mechanisms that are likely modulated by the presence of crustal magnetic fields, including Joule heating, ion chemical heating, as well as electron impact heating via either precipitating solar wind electrons or locally produced photoelectrons. The respective heating rates of these mechanisms are substantially lower than the solar EUV heating rate, implying that none of them is able to interpret the observations.

Paradis, Isabelle. January 1999 (has links)
