Webová aplikace pro grafickou vizualizaci geografických časových řad / Web Application for Graphical Visualization of Geospatial Time Series

Rykala, Kryštof January 2021 (has links)

Effect of working from home on engineers’ career prospects : How does working from home impact visibility and in turn the engineer’s career?

Da Silva Maximino, André, García Colón, María January 2022 (has links)
Background: Working from home (WFH) has become a new tendency thanks to the improvement of technological communications that enable new flexible ways of working. Before 2020 and the Covid19 pandemic, some companies had already started implementing this approach. However, the pandemic drove a widespread implementation of remote work, leading to the appearance of new problems previously not considered by most companies and individuals. Among these problems is the effect of WFH on the employee’s career perspective as well as the lower visibility in the workplace which could have an impact in future promotions. Objectives: The main research phenomenon to be studied is the impact of WFH on career prospects for engineers and in particular the paradox between visibility at work and the career progress of the employees. Methodology: The contribution of this thesis is a fourfold. First, it analyses the effect of visibility when WFH on engineers’ career perspectives. Second, it proposes a framework that relates WFH, visibility and career. Thirdly, it contributes to the existing literature on WFH, visibility and career. Lastly, it uses the innovative method of questerview, involving twelve engineers working on R&D department of an aeronautical company, to finally develop a thematic analysis and generate a new framework to be discussed with the first, according to the grounded theory method. Results: The results showed that WFH has an impact on career progression with a decrease invisibility, affecting it through personal relationships. WFH also affects other factors (such as networking and soft-skills) and these have a connection with visibility that, all together, will have a high impact in the career promotion rate. Other findings include the necessity to work on visibility by prioritizing the meetings with the right people in order to become more allegeable for promotion. Visibility affects the trust between manager and employee, due to the fact that the latter becomes much more dependable on deliverables when comparing to working in the office. WFH doesn’t affect visibility for career promotion if credibility with managers has been achieved, this being connected with job quality. Conclusions: WFH and visibility have both a high impact on the engineer’s career progression. The first reduces direct contact with peers and superiors, which in turn decreases visibility. Visibility has been found to be an essential tool for promotion. Its effect on career promotion works as the enabler to promotion, making superiors notice your work and keeping the employee in their minds to consider when a promotion is proposed. Visibility has not solely an impact on career promotion, but it has a connection between networking and soft-skills, and these three factors are directly related to one another when considering the influence on career promotion. Recommendations for future research: The relationships between factors in the literature review framework need to be studied further, in line with the cross connections found in the new framework. Also, during the elaboration of the thematic maps, it was also found that WFH has an impact on daily work (affecting autonomy, networking, and productivity) and additional research would enrich the final framework. Lastly, it was found during the questerview analysis that other factors not considered in the present study are also relevant for career promotion such as age, education level and experience. Future research could focus on studying the impact these factors have on career promotion.

"Questions About Stuff You Don't Normally See on a Map:" A Study of Sixth-Graders' Abilities to Understand Quantitative Thematic Maps

Gaspers, Stephanie Lynn 24 October 2007 (has links)
Middle school students work with many types of maps in school, however most maps they use are qualitative thematic maps that only show differences in kind as compared to quantitative thematic maps that show differences in amounts. This thesis investigates sixth-grade students' abilities to analyze three types of thematic maps: dot maps, choropleth maps, and graduated circle maps. Two hundred and two Oregon sixth-graders were tested on their abilities to interpret map symbology, make inferences from the data, categorize values into regions, and ask geographic questions concerning data distributions. The results indicate that students can understand these three quantitative thematic maps for these purposes. These results also raise the question, "Why aren't there more quantitative thematic maps presented to students in middle school curriculum?"

The Effects of Multiple Thematic Layers on Web Map Use by Middle School Students

Freed, Andrew Percy 01 January 2011 (has links)
Access to the to the Internet and to a variety of interactive mapping tools has increased interest among middle school teachers to use interactive maps in conjunction with learning activities. There is very little research in the area of interactive mapping in educational situations, specifically with regards to layer maps that combine multiple thematic layers on a single map. This study evaluates the relationship between the number of layers present on a web-based map and middle-school students' accuracy and timeliness using the map to answer geographic questions. Additionally, this study examines the specific effect of a hill shade on student response time and accuracy when answering questions do not require any terrain information. Tests were conducted in five Portland, Oregon area middle school classrooms using Blackboard CE8 to present maps and collect responses. The results of this research indicate no significant relationship between the number of layers present on a web map and middle school students' accuracy or response times while using the map to answer questions. The presence of a hillshade layers does not significantly impact the students' response times or accuracy while answering questions while using the map either.

Arranjos de sensores orientados à missão para a geração automática de mapas temáticos em VANTs / Mission oriented sensor arrays to generate thematic maps in UAVs

Figueira, Nina Machado 03 February 2016 (has links)
The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has become increasingly common, particularly in civilian applications. In the military scenario, the use of UAVs has focused the accomplishment of specific tasks in two broad categories: remote sensing and transport of military material. This work focuses the remote sensing category. It address the definition of a model and reference architecture for the development of smart sensors oriented to specific tasks. The main objective of these missions is to generate thematic maps. This work investigates processes and mechanisms that enable the automatic generation of thematic maps. In this sense, the concept of MOSA (Mission Oriented Sensor Array) is proposed and modeled. As case studies, we propose two automatic mapping systems for on-the-ground generated sound sources, one for the civilian case and one for the military case. These sounds may come from the noise generated by large animals (including humans), from internal combustion engine vehicles or from artillery activity (including hunters). The MOSAs modeled for this application integrate data from a thermal imaging sensor and an on-the-ground network of acoustic sensors. The fusion of position information, provided by the two sensors, into a single cartographic basis is one of the key aspects addressed in this work. The main contributions are the proposed MOSA systems, including concepts, models and architecture and the reference implementation comprised by the system for automatic mapping of sound sources.

In the first area under study, the scaling of semivariance function method and spatial linear model with multiple independent replications was used. The structures of spatial variability of the potassium content in soil and soybean yield in five agricultural years were compared. The results indicate similarity between the thematic maps produced according to individual models and maps generated using the model set to scaled semivariogram. The same happens to build thematic maps according to the individual models compared to maps generated according to the spatial linear models with multiple independent replications. Comparing the maps originated by the scaled model and spatial linear model with multiple repetitions, high levels of accuracy were obtained, which implies similarity of thematic maps built with these two methods. In the second area under study the interest was to use the spatial linear model with multiple independent replications to study the spatial variability of soybean yield in both years as a function of covariates soil resistance to penetration (RSP) and bulk density (Dens) in the layers 0-0.10, 0.10-0.20 and 0.20-0.30 m deep. In both studies, the structure of spatial variability estimated by spatial linear model with multiple independent replications caused reduction of computational time in the adjustment of models and the generation of thematic maps.

Geoenvironmental zoning for a planned and participative management: coastal plain of the city of Icapuà /CE / Zoneamento geoambiental para uma gestÃo planejada e participativa: planÃcie costeira do municÃpio de IcapuÃ/CE

Ana Maria Ferreira dos Santos 22 August 2008 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the sustainability of the carcinoculture in the city of Fortim-CearÃ, taking into consideration environmental, social and technological aspects. The research aimed at identifying the main handlin g practices and the technology that has been adopted in the shrimp culture farms, and its contribution to a sustainable development of the activity. The study presents some forms of technology and handling practices that can be adopted by the farms, which are considered less environmentally impacting, and it also identifies the main impacts generated by the activity. Primary and secondary data were used. The primary data were obtained by means of an empirical research carried out in the city of Fortim, during the months of April and August, 2005. During these visits, questionnaires were applied, with semi-structu red and open questions. It was also possible to carry out interviews with representatives of governmental agencies and the business community. Secondary data were obtained by means of bibliographical research comprising theses, books and articles on the issue, as well as documents such as reports, Codes of Conduct, Federal and State govern ment directives, and assessments made by governmental agencies in charge of regulating and supervising the activity. In this study, tabular and descriptive analysis techniques and a modified version of the âForest Service of United States Agricultural Department (1986) methodology were applied. These methods made it possible to transform the qualitative variables into quantitative ones, through numerical values and weights so as to obtain a Significance Index of the technological, environmental and social variables. Upon the results obtained by these Indexes, it was possible to assess that the carcinoculture in the region is not developing on a sustainable basis, rejecting, therefore, the proposed hypothesis, according to which the handling practices and the technology that has been used in these farms are contributing for the development of the activity in a way that is in harmony with the environment. In spite of the existence of some initiatives that suggest that the sector is starting to take into consideration environmental matters, it is possible to affirm that the actions carried out by the sectorâs main entities have not been able to effectively promote the necessary changes in the behavior and conduct of the business, neither has it been able to call the attention to the importance of preserving the environment.
