Understanding the Evolution of Theoretical Constructs in Organization Studies: Examining Cooperation and Purpose

Singleton, Laura Gaie January 2011 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Mary Ann Glynn / I examine the process of evolution for theoretical constructs in the field of organizational scholarship, leveraging the sociology of knowledge literature and empirical studies of construct development to focus my research. Prior studies suggest several key factors operating in the process--actor-oriented components, including the characteristics and strategies of scholarly actors, and situationally-oriented components of historical context and word meanings. No study, however, has assessed these factors in interaction over time. I address this gap through a historical study based primarily on archival data regarding construct usage in journal articles and scholarly books. Specifically, I explore the evolution of "cooperation" and "purpose" in organizational scholarship from 1938 through 2005. My findings contribute to elaboration of the theory of construct evolution proposed by Hirsch & Levin (1999), as I observe that a construct developing largely within a single disciplinary paradigm is marked by narrowing rather than expansion of meaning in the course of increased operationalization. Further, I find that an interdisciplinary context of evolution multiplies not just meanings but also the language used for a construct. I also document how antecedent conditions of meaning for the words "cooperation" and "purpose," as well as elements of historical context, affect the evolution process. In addition, my study extends the observations of Barley & Kunda (1992) regarding a cyclical dichotomy between rational and normative paradigms in managerial discourse, as I observe this pattern contributing to the fragmentation of language and meanings in the constructs studied. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2011. / Submitted to: Boston College. A meta-analysis of existing research on citizen adoption of e-government

Rana, Nripendra P., Dwivedi, Y.K., Williams, M.D. 25 September 2020 (has links)
Yes / The purpose of this paper is to perform a weight-analysis and to undertake a meta-analysis of findings reported in published research on the adoption and diffusion of e-government. Usable data relating to e-government adoption research were collected from 103 empirical studies. Of those 103 articles, only 63 used a range of different constructs with appropriate correlation values required for performing a weight- and meta-analysis. Diagrammatic representation has been presented using significant as well as non-significant relationships from all 103 publications. A broader analysis of research on adoption and diffusion of e-government also reflects that although a large number of theories and theoretical constructs were borrowed from the reference disciplines, their utilization by e-government researchers appears to be largely random in approach. This paper also acknowledges the theoretical contribution, the limitations of this study, and suggests further research directions for the continued work.

"Let's think together!" (a review of dialogue in the workplace).

Marais, John 18 August 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores a conceptual understanding of dialogue within a community of practice. It argues that meaningful conversations are at the core of critical, reflective, and analytical praxis, and that a critical understanding holds transformative possibilities for teaching and learning. Aspects of western and ethnic paradigms and their theoretical constructs, which may either enhance or hinder current practices, are identified, as are elements that arise from several case studies drawn from a large banking organisation operating out of South Africa. It is hoped that an evaluation of the research findings will provide a basis for an understanding of dialogue within a local context and that, further, it will provide a platform for extended dialogical exploration and research.

La inteligencia artificial y el periodismo de datos, constructos teóricos sobre su implicación en el aumento de la productividad del periodista entre los años 2015-2020 / Artificial intelligence and data journalism, theoretical constructs about their involvement in increasing journalist productivity between the years 2015-2020

Chávez López, Sharon Geraldine 03 December 2020 (has links)
This research covers the topic of artificial intelligence and data journalism, and its implications in increasing journalistic productivity in the period of 2015-2020, in this sense, it is understood that, with the rise of technology and The use of artificial intelligence in the context of journalism has represented an important aspect in terms of data journalism, its implications in the production of news. To this end, the general objective was: To understand the implications of artificial intelligence in data journalism in increasing the productivity of the journalist between the years 2015-2020, and as specific objectives Analyze theorists have been in charge of contextualizing the use of Artificial Intelligence in data journalism between 2015-2020. Explain the uses and technological advances that artificial intelligence has allowed in data journalism. Unveil the importance of aspects of AI and data journalism in increasing data productivity. To establish the areas of journalism that have benefited from the use of artificial intelligence, according to the theoretical constructs evidenced between the years 2015-2020. Where a methodology was applied from a qualitative approach, from an analysis technique, a systematic review of the different empirical sources from the period of 2015 to the present. The instruments used were an interview and a content registry, which allowed the construction of a matrix and an analysis guide. / Trabajo de investigación
