Treatment of Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) in Air Streams by A Full-scale Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer

Shen, Ming-Tsung 10 July 2001 (has links)
In this study, a pilot-scale Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) was used to test its performance for volatile organic compound (VOC) destruction and degree of thermal energy conservation. The RTO is electrically heated and contains two 0.5 m ¡Ñ 0.5 m ¡Ñ 2.0 m (L ¡Ñ W ¡Ñ H) columns both packed with gravel particles of 1.0 cm in diameter to a height of 1.4 m. The bed has a void fraction of 0.415. The purpose of this study is to establish the influencing operating conditions and to improve the technique for further applications. Experiments include two phases: (1) energy conservation test with no VOC in the influent air stream , and (2) VOC destruction test with influent air streams containing one of the three VOCs: isopropyl alcohol, acetone, and xylene. Phase 1 experiments were conducted in the maximum gravel temperatures (Tmax) of 402-704 oC, superficial gas velocities (Ug, evaluated at ambient temperatures of 25-30 oC) of 0.15-0.50 m/s, and bed shift times (ts) of 0.5-2.0 min. Results indicate that the temperature raise (

Strategic raw material supply for the particleboard-producing industry in Europe : Problems and challenges

Trischler, Johann January 2016 (has links)
Particleboard was invented to increase the utilization of wood and it soon became an important core material for furniture production. Nowadays, other industries such as the pulp and papermaking industry and the thermal energy recovery industry claim the same type of raw material. This leads to increasing competition and higher prices than in the past when that kind of wood raw material was widely available and of low price. The particleboard-producing industry is therefore seeking opportunities to reduce the competition and ensure the future supply of lignocellulosic raw material for their products. The purpose of the work summarised in this thesis was to investigate the strategic supply of lignocellulosic raw materials for particleboard production and to evaluate alternatives for the supply of lignocellulosic raw material for particleboard production. To encompass the complex field of strategic raw material supply, several publications have considered different stages along the supply chain. These papers range from empirical studies to practical tests on a laboratory scale. In this thesis, some of the papers are linked together, building the base for the overall results. The results show that the task of increasing the supply of lignocellulosic raw material as primary raw material source is limited by several factors, but that improved product design coupled with a suitable recycling concept can greatly increase the availability of lignocellulosic raw material as a secondary source. Alternatively, the use of non-wood plants might be an opportunity to substitute wood as raw material but there are still some problems relating to the particle properties which must be overcome first.

A Micro-Cooling, Heating, And Power (M-CHP) Instructional Module

Oliver, Jason Ryan 10 December 2005 (has links)
Cooling, Heating, and Power (CHP) is an emerging category of energy systems consisting of power generation equipment coupled with thermally activated components. The application of CHP systems to residential and small commercial buildings is known as micro-CHP (m-CHP). This instructional module has been developed to introduce engineering students to m-CHP. In the typical engineering curriculum, a number of courses could contain topics related to m-CHP. Thermodynamics, heat transfer, HVAC, heat and power, thermal systems design, and alternate energy systems courses are appropriate m-CHP topics. The types of material and level of analysis for this range of courses vary. In thermodynamics or heat transfer, basic problems involving a m-CHP flavor are needed, but in an alternate energy systems course much more detail and content would be required. This instructional module contains both lecture material and a compilation of problems/exercises for both m-CHP systems and components.
