A comparison of the Angolan diaspora and their biblical counterparts in the post-exilic period.

This study examines the Angolan Diaspora in the recent history of Angola, paying attention to the phenomenon of displacement. The Angolan history is used to compare the situation of displaced Angolans with the situation of Judean exiles during the Babylonian and Persian periods (600-300 BCE). Chapter one deals with the introduction. Chapter two of this thesis provides a detailed description of Angola from Geography to its minerals that are fuel to the conflict, financing the war (in both sides), which is the main cause of Diaspora in Angola. Chapter three discusses the social phenomenon of displacement as well as the refugee crisis in Africa and in particular in Angola. Chapter four discusses displacement in the Ancient Near East as well as displacement in the Biblical times. Chapter five provides an analysis of Psalm 74 and the Angolan responses in form of songs. The purpose of this thesis, an integration of Christian spirituality into Evangelical Christian education, has required that both these disciplines be explored and discussed. Christian spirituality has been limited to a discussion of Evangelical and Anglo-Catholic spirituality, and has included a discussion of the commonalities between these two traditions. Since both are extremely vast, this thesis does not cover all the varieties within each tradition itself. The focus has been for a general understanding of spirituality in order to integrate it with education in the local South African church context. Christian education has been explored from the perspective of education within the local church, particularly of adults. I do not consider the role of the school, nor do I cover the education of children and youth. These were necessary limitations to my topic. The discussion of Christian education is taken from a broad perspective, not just an evangelical due to the sparsity of literature on evangelical education. Based on this research, suggested guidelines for the integration of Christian spirituality into Christian education in the local South African evangelical church are given. This forms the basis of part III of this thesis. This section begins with a discussion of the points of contact between these two traditions, which forms the direction that the final chapter takes, giving some specific guidelines. These guidelines focus on the Evangelical emphases with the centrality of scripture being crucial. The general conclusion of this thesis is that the task of integrating Christian spirituality into Christian education should not be that difficult since there is already much that is common between them. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Durban-Westville, 1994.

This dissertation, "Muslim Women's contribution to the reconstruction of the South African Society through entrepreneurial and religious efforts", is to place on the South African agenda an understanding and appreciation of unsung heroines. Changes at grassroots level by a marginalised group always have profound impact on society. What is it to be a woman, committed to a way of life, engaged in transmitting a set of values related thereto, empowering other women and living as a minority in a patriarchal society that is undergoing rapid socio-political transformation and being an integral part of it? As Muslim women, the ummah (Muslim community) is directed by male interpretations of the Islamic text. What are women's responses to a worldview imposed on them? All these are different challenges, each in itself a marginalized component. The aim is to identify Muslim women and their contribution through da'wah to the reconstruction of the South African society within these challenges. The research participants are not Islamic scholars; their methodologies are not traditional and narrow but embedded in the humanistic ideals and ethics of the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah. Their da'wah work includes instilling self worth, spiritual and family values, socio-economic intervention and economic empowerment. Their contributions have been significant and profound in a nascent democracy. To get a "glimpse" into their lives and arduous activities it was necessary to hear their voices; to let them speak. Qualitative research methodology through narratives and life history in context was used. Allah did not create one voice for humankind but many voices for one humankind and through diversity expects people to exercise their freedom to live in unity.
