No. of bitstreams: 1 Ricardo Monteiro Guedes de Almeida.pdf: 2066241 bytes, checksum: 71b6bcd10a6230f6e6b94754338a8997 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-12 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The purpose of the present study was to investigate the notion of the construction of the fundamental fantasy in Lacan, aiming at a possible articulation with the Freudian concept of Durcharbeitung. Our guiding question was how the construction of the fundamental fantasy imposes itself as a limit to the tireless work of the analysand's perlaboration. We start from the notion that the construction of the fundamental fantasy indicates a limit to the persistent work of the significant articulation, characterized by the Durcharbeitung, as well as an opening for the notion of a finite analysis. To develop this thesis, we mainly cover the works of Jacques Lacan. With this purpose, we limited ourselves to his teachings from 1957 to 1967, a period that goes from Seminar 5: the formations of the unconscious to Seminar 14: the logic of fantasy. In our last chapter, based on Seminar 14, the logic of fantasy, we approached Klein's quadrangle and the way Lacan uses it to represent the route of an analysis. Only then was it possible to address the fundamental fantasy as the subject's deadlock and its role in the route of the analytic process, more specifically in the work of Durcharbeitung. In conclusion, we defend that the fundamental fantasy, associated with the subject's deadlock, represents in the analysis a limit point to the work of Durcharbeitung. We understand that the fundamental fantasy was present both at the point of arrival of the time of understanding and also at the point of departure from the moment of conclusion / O presente estudo teve como propósito pesquisar a noção de construção da fantasia fundamental em Lacan, visando uma possível articulação com o conceito freudiano de Durcharbeitung.

Divided only by the 17th parallel : a study of similarities between American and Vietnamese soldiers in selected works

Epstein, Andrea 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation undertakes a comparative study of certain works of literature concerning Vietnamese and American troops during the United States’ involvement in Southeast Asia in the 1960s and 1970s. My assumption was that during war it is possible to conclude that enemy forces behave in the same manner in order to reach the identical goal, that of victory over the ‘other’ side. I sought to ascertain how under the selfsame conditions they could be considered as enemies. Divided only by the 17th Parallel: A Study of Similarities Between American and Vietnamese Soldiers in Selected Works By close reading of six texts, three from Vietnamese and three from American perspectives, I have attempted to extract their similar views from each in order to create a context in which the likeness of each side is demonstrated. This was achieved by exploring four themes: those of landscape, time, conflict and ghosts. It was discovered that the protagonists’ behaviour was the same and that rather than being the others’ adversary their true enemies were found within their own ranks. The results indicate that a wider perspective should be adopted on war than one which regards it as a simplistic binary consisting of two opposing sides. Contrary to any supposition that enemies must remain separated, there is more than enough evidence for one to conclude that they actually occupied mutual psychological territory. Key Terms: Landscape, time, ghosts, psychological damage, Reader Response, CSR, PTSD, New Historicism, dehumanisation, conditions of war, 1954 Geneva Agreement, ideology, war literature. / English Literature / M.A. (English Literature)

Temporally distinct impairments in cognitive function following a sensitizing regimen of methamphetamine

Janetsian, Sarine Sona 01 August 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Methamphetamine (MA) is a widely abused psychostimulant that has been shown to evoke an array of neurobiological abnormalities and cognitive deficits in humans and in rodent models (Marshall & O'Dell, 2012). Alterations in cognitive function after repeated drug use may lead to impaired decision-making, a lack of behavioral control, and ultimately the inability to abstain from drug use. Human studies have shown that alterations in neurobiology resulting from prolonged MA use may lead to a number of cognitive deficits, including impairments in executive function, learning, memory, and impulsivity. These impairments, specifically those that engage the prefrontal cortex (PFC) or hippocampus (HC), may persist or recover based on the duration of abstinence. In rodents, repeated intermittent injections of MA yield protracted changes in neurobiology and behavior, which have been shown to effectively model a number of the biological and cognitive abnormalities observed in addiction. In order to assess the temporal evolution of impaired cognitive function throughout abstinence, sensitization was first induced in rats (7 x 5.0 mg/kg MA over 14 days). MA-treated rats initially exhibited a robust increase in locomotion that transitioned to stereotypy as the induction phase progressed. Then, the effects of MA sensitization on social interaction (SI), temporal order recognition (TOR) and novel object recognition (NOR) was assessed at one-day and 30-days post induction. No differences were observed in SI in either group or after a single injection of MA. However, an acute injection of 5.0 mg/kg of MA 30-minutes prior to testing dramatically reduced SI time. Impairments in TOR and NOR were observed in MA-treated rats after one day of abstinence, and impairments in TOR, but not NOR, were observed on day 30 of abstinence. No differences in TOR and NOR after a single injection of MA or saline were observed. These data establish that after 30 days of abstinence from a sensitizing regimen of MA, the ability to recall the temporal sequence that two stimuli were encountered was impaired and that was not attributable to impaired novelty detection. These data also suggest that at least some of the neurocognitive abnormalities caused by chronic MA administration may normalize after prolonged abstinence, since the ability to detect novelty recovered after 30 days of abstinence. These data provide compelling support that, since MA-sensitization caused temporal deficits in memory, PFC and HC function may be differentially impaired throughout the time course of abstinence.
