Relationship between vegetation boundaries and severe local storms in the Delta region of Mississippi

This study examines how the Delta-bluffs interface in the Mississippi River alluvial flood plain of western Mississippi affects the spatial variation of tornado occurrence and the characteristics of tornadoes that occur within fifty km of the interface. A t-test and Poisson distribution were used to test for clustering of tornadoes along the Delta-bluffs interface. Previous research has been used to show differing vegetation and soil types can act as focusing mechanisms for thunderstorm development and enhancement. An in-depth analysis of eight tornado events reveals the Delta-bluffs interface enhanced reflectivity and velocity values whenmseven of eight of the storms were within twenty km of the topographic boundary. It was also shown that changes in the roughness of the Earth’s surface can affect the SRH being ingested by a thunderstorm. It was found that F0-F1 tornadoes are significantly (p < 0.01) clustered along the interface but F2-F5 tornadoes were not significantly (p < 0.05) clustered along this boundary. It appears unlikely that characteristics of tornadoes within and outside of the Delta are statistically different.

Relationships between daily teleconnection indices and Oklahoma tornado activity

The phasing of various teleconnection patterns has been linked to variability of tornado activity in various geographic regions. These links have been used to improve long-term tornado forecast models. Oklahoma has been long-considered the center of Tornado Alley, has remained vulnerable to tornado hazards despite mitigation efforts, and as such would benefit greatly from improvements to tornado forecasting. This study compares phases of four teleconnection patterns considered to be primary climate influencers in North America (El Niño-Southern Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation, and Pacific/North American Pattern) to tornado activity in Oklahoma. The phases of these teleconnection patterns were individually compared to Oklahoma tornado day frequency via χ2 statistical testing. It is shown that there are potentially linkages between the negative phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation, the Arctic Oscillation, and the Pacific-North American Pattern and Oklahoma tornado activity.

Tornadoes In Mississippi: A County by County Community Risk Assessment

Mississippi leads the nation in tornado deaths per unit area. Previous risk assessment studies have indicated a connection between housing type and fatalities but have focused only on a national scale. The purpose of this study was to provide a local scale risk assessment for Mississippi. Each county?s individual tornado risks were combined with US Census county housing data for each decade from 1960-2000. The study found that the comparable risk to life and property is highest in Harrison County and Hinds County, but with proper shelters and community planning this risk would be mitigated.

An Investigation of Thermodynamic Characteristics associated with California Tornadoes and US Landfalling Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes

Limited tornado research has been conducted across the state of California, especially when looking at the low-level thermodynamics of tornado genesis. In comparison much more research has been undertaken across the United States. This study examines low-level thermodynamic parameters associated with California tornadoes between 1960 and 2005. The study also examines similarities within the low-level thermodynamic parameters associated with California tornadoes and tornadoes associated with landfalling hurricanes between 1960 and 2005. The effect of the ocean on the low-levels of the atmosphere seems to be a strong tornado discriminator when analyzing California tornadoes. This discriminator is especially evident when breaking California into four distinct subregions. Use of low-level thermodynamic parameters in a large region such as California is a poor tornadoorecasting tool. This fact was strongly evident in this research when instability, especially in the lowest 3 km of the atmosphere, was used as a forecasting tool for California tornadoes.
