Total quality management (TQM) implementation among ISO 9001 registered construction companies in South Africa

Thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of Masters of Science in Building (Project Management in Construction) to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, School of Construction Economics and Management at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2017 / Purpose: There has been much assertion about how ISO 9001 facilitates TQM implementation among ISO 9001 registered construction companies. However, the success rate of TQM implementation among ISO 9001 registered companies varies. The aim of this study was to investigate TQM implementation among ISO 9001 registered construction companies in South Africa. Three objectives were also established to aid in achieving the aim. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey design using structured questionnaire to collect quantitative and qualitative data was adopted. Respondents were purposively sampled among ISO 9001 registered construction companies in South Africa. 70 completed questionnaires were obtained from the target of 100. Text-based (i.e., qualitative) data were analysed using qualitative content analysis while quantitative data were analysed descriptively. Findings: The main three findings include: (1) the prevalence of defining quality as meeting clients’ expectations and assessing quality through internal inspection; (2) highest level of agreement on TQM being implemented through checking design conformance to standards and lowest level of agreement on formal training on TQM; and (3) customer feedback exercises and supplier relationship were indicated as being the least implemented ISO 9001 principles. Implications: The main practical implication of this study is identifying how TQM is being implemented among ISO 9001 registered construction companies in South Africa and the challenges they face. The main theoretical implication is being able to add to the existing studies validating ISO 9001 registered construction companies can and should implement TQM across their processes. Limitations: The main limitation has been restricted to not collecting data on the professional backgrounds and years of experience of the study participants. A finding during the pilot testing necessitated the preference to indicate job roles as against professional backgrounds. / XL2018

'For the sake of our customers': A case study of the links between Coordination, Communication and TQM

This study is a qualitative case study approach to theory building that aims to develop a more holistic understanding of the patterns of coordination in an organisation that has successfully implemented TQM using a communication perspective. The data were gathered at a large private hospital in Bangkok where 36 respondents from nonmedical treatment areas were interviewed. The study used in-depth interviews as the primary data source, complemented with participant-observations and document analysis to address the main research question: In what ways have the effects of TQM on communicative attitudes and practices contributed to coordination? Influenced by the notion of social construction, the analysis suggests that despite TQM consisting of several contributing principles and tools, it is the role of leadership that demonstrated the most significant value to communication and coordination outcomes. Three key patterns of coordination emerge in the study: (1) shared meaning and common purpose derived from management?s interpretation and articulation of TQM reality from a customer perspective, (2) shared understanding as a result of management?s construction of TQM influenced administrative arrangements, and (3) emotional experiences as a result of staff members? social interaction. The finding of this study suggests that achieving coordination is far more complex, and can be difficult to control by management, specifically one emerging from an emotional experience which was found to have more effect on staff members? decisions in investing or reserving their energy in coordination, as compared to the other two patterns. The findings demonstrate that organising coordination is not always rational and static, as previously discussed in the dominant organisation design-based literature. Rather, coordination is highly dependent on the process of social construction, communication, and interaction between organisational members. For this reason, the role of management in ensuring consistency in interpretation and construction of the shared reality, and in ongoing communication is imperative, not only to guide and maintain coordinated actions, but also to achieve meaningful and mindful coordination of members within the organisation. The practical theory developed in the study makes a direct contribution to coordination theory, specifically on the emergence of multi-dimensional coordination patterns which suggests the need to reconsider a research approach that could accommodate the complex nature of coordination which is also driven by communication, social interaction, and reciprocal relationships. Future studies on coordination could be positioned within a relativist, constructionism or interpretivist paradigm and investigate interrelated multiple ontological domains, not only the conventional organisational structure, but also cognition, discursive and social interaction. The study also offers some useful insights into both coordination and communication aspects for practitioners who aim to successfully implement TQM.

The study of relationship among Organization Change,Total Quality Management toward Organizational Operating Performance - The case of Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation.

In order to correspond with the negotiated requirements in Taiwan¡¦s bid to join the WTO and to satisfy the trend of economic liberalization, the government of Taiwan has deregulated tobacco and wine monopoly system by abolishing the ¡§Provisional Rules on Tobacco and Wine Monopoly in Taiwan Province¡¨ on Jan 1, 2002. With Taiwan¡¦s deregulating imports of alcohol and tobacco products, increasing number of foreign rivals have entered our local market and led the field of wine & tobacco to fierce competition. Encountering drastic external change and losing the protection of monopoly system, Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp. suffered sharp decrease in revenue. Currently how to promote organizational operating performance is the most important issue. This study targets on how the staff of Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp. react to the current plight and challenge by issuing questionnaires to them to evaluate the differentia of employees¡¦ attitude toward ¡§organizational change,¡¨ ¡§total quality management,¡¨ and ¡§organizational operating performance.¡¨ Besides, this study also focuses on the measures that should be adopted by Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp. to promote organizational operating performance. This company should make fundamental organization changes or conduct total quality management to reach their goal. The conclusions of this study are presented as follows: 1. ¡§Organizational change¡¨ has no significant connection with ¡§organizational performance.¡¨ Both the benefit from reorganizing company into a private enterprise and the employees¡¦ anxious reactions toward organizational changes have no effect on inspiring or challenging staff to change the organization¡¦s culture, to create their own work value, and to promote organizational operating performance. 2.¡§Total quality management¡¨ has significant and positive relationship with ¡§organizational operating performance.¡¨ In order to promote organizational operating performance, it is compulsory and essential that Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp. conduct ¡§total quality management.¡¨ 3.¡§Total quality management¡¨ has positive relationship with ¡§organizational operating performance.¡¨ However, the degrees of concern about the variable topics vary greatly among employees of different ranks and positions. Suggestions in practical management: 1.Postpone the speed of privatization. At first, the organization should thoroughly conduct ¡§total quality management,¡¨ establish ¡§the nuclear competition,¡¨ and improve the organizational operating performance. 2.In order to avoid employees¡¦ resistance during the process of ¡§organization change,¡¨ it is necessary to plan the circulation of man power in advance, to communicate with employees, and to protect the staffs¡¦ privilege. 3.Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp. is a company with great potential. It is very important for the management level to improve the efficiency by changing employees¡¦ mindset. How to inspire employees to work hard from mind and to create their own value are directions that are worth the high-level management¡¦s pursuit.

The Influence of Leadership, Organizational Culture, and Total Quality Management on the Organizational Performances-- An Empirical Study of Taiwan Sugar Corporation¡¦s Business Divisions

Abstract According to the report of Robbins (1999), there were very close relationship between leadership and organization culture. Chien (2004) explored the factors of affecting the organization performances by the empirical study of Taiwan¡¦s companies. The results revealed that the model of incentive, leadership, organization culture and environments, job design and human resources strategy could affect the organization performances. Madu, Kuei and Lin (1995) studied the relationship between quality facet and organization performances by the empirical study of American and Taiwan¡¦s manufacturing companies, the results showed that quality facet had apparent relationship to the performances, and there were apparent differences between different operational variables. Many reports revealed that leadership, organization culture and total quality management could affect performances. Taiwan Sugar Corporation is a traditional sugar production national company at the early stages. Recently, it divided into eight business divisions, such as Sugar Business, Hypermarket Business, Marketing Business, Petroleum Business, Agriculture Business, Biotechnology Business, Leisure Business and Animal Business. The different leadership, organization culture and total quality management leads each Business Division show different performances during the organization transformation. From the view of organization, study the effects of leadership, organization culture and total quality management on performances can afford some suggestions to the chief executive officers. Through the empirical study, the results of comparing demography statistic variables in each variable facet such as leadership, organization culture, total quality management and organization performances are described as following¡G 1.Leadership facet: There are apparent differences in the mixing of transformation and transaction leadership facet among age, education level, position character and business division. 2.Organization culture facet: There are apparent differences in the bureaucratic culture facet among position character and business divisions. The differences also exist in the mixing of creative and support culture facet among work years and education level. 3.Total quality management facet: Biotechnology Business Division is superior to others in employee training and production process management facet and supplier quality management facet. It shows that Biotechnology Business Division faces more competitive environments than other business division, and sells more outside producing products. The leaders make the most on employee training, production process management and supplier quality management topics than other Business Division¡¦s leaders. 4.Organization performances facet: There are apparent differences in the customer satisfaction level facet among marriage and work years; the apparent differences also exist in the production performances among education level, job assortment and business divisions; the market share performances and gain rate performances also show the differences among business divisions. Finally, the results show that the leadership influences organization performances through the path of organization culture and total quality management. Organization culture influences organization performances through the path of total quality management. Total quality management influences organization performances directly. However, a closer scrutiny at the Department of Education reveals chronic ailments of lack of competency among teachers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Integrated Quality Management System on quality academic achievement and human relations in primary schools located in Ladysmith. The aim was to make a contribution to the policy makers in the department of education, for the betterment of the quality management system and the achievement of its objective which is quality education.
