A comparative study and application of continuously variable transmission to a single main rotor heavy lift helicopter

Rotorcraft transmission design is limited by empirical weight trends that are proportional to the power/torque raised to the two-thirds coupled with the relative inexperience industry has with the employment of variable speed transmission to heavy lift helicopters of the order of 100,000 lbs gross weight and 30,000 installed horsepower. The advanced rotorcraft transmission program objectives are to reduce transmission weight by at least 25%, reduce sound pressure levels by at least 10 dB, have a 5000 hr mean time between removal, and also incorporate the use of split torque technology in rotorcraft drivetrains of the future. The major obstacle that challenges rotorcraft drivetrain design is the selection, design, and optimization of a variable speed transmission in the goal of achieving a 50% reduction in rotor speed and its ability to handle high torque with light weight gears, as opposed to using a two-speed transmission which has inherent structural problems and is highly unreliable due to the embodiment of the traction type transmission, complex clutch and brake system. This thesis selects a nontraction pericyclic continuously variable transmission (P-CVT) as the best approach for a single main rotor heavy lift helicopter to target the above mentioned obstacle for drivetrain design and provides advancement in the state of the art of drivetrain design over existing planetary and split torque transmissions currently used in helicopters. The goal of the optimization process was to decrease weight, decrease noise, increase efficiency, and increase safety and reliability. The objective function utilized the minimization of the weight and the constraint is the tooth bending stress of the facegears. The most important parameters of the optimization process are weight, maintainability, and reliability which are cross-functionally related to each other, and these parameters are related to the torques and operating speeds. The analysis of the split torque type P-CVT achieved a weight reduction of 42.5% and 40.7% over planetary and split torque transmissions respectively. In addition, a 19.5 dB sound pressure level reduction was achieved using active gear struts, and also the use of fabricated steel truss like housing provided a higher maintainability and reliability, low cost, and low weight over cast magnesium housing currently employed in helicopters. The static finite element analysis of the split torque type P-CVT, both 2-D and 3-D, yielded stresses below the allowable bending stress of the material. The goal of the finite element analysis is to see if the designed product has met its functional requirements. The safety assessment of the split torque type P-CVT yielded a 99% probability of mission success based on a Monte Carlo simulation using stochastic- petri net analysis and a failure hazard analysis. This was followed by an FTA/RBD analysis which yielded an overall system failure rate of 140.35 failures per million hours, and a preliminary certification and time line of certification was performed. The use of spherical facegears and pericyclic kinematics has advanced the state of the art in drivetrain design primarily in the reduction of weight and noise coupled with high safety, reliability, and efficiency.

Vid för mycket gaspådrag under en acceleration kan det hända att hjulen förlorar fäste och börjar spinna loss, något som leder till både försämrad kontroll över fordonet och att däcken slits ut i förtid. Traction controlsystemet förhindrar hjulen från att spinna loss och försöker maximera friktionen.</p><p>Målet med detta examensarbete är att utvärdera olika reglerprinciper samt att undersöka olika möjligheter för att reglera friktionen mellan däck och väg. Det är ett svårt reglerproblem, dels på grund av dess olinjäritet, dels på grund av det faktum att friktionen är en okänd parameter.</p><p>För att kunna undersöka olika reglermöjligheter har en modell över hjuldynamiken och en modell över drivlinan tagits fram i Matlabs simuleringsprogram Simulink. Därutöver har tre regulatorer designats: en fuzzy-regulator, en fuzzy-P-regulator och en PI-regulator. Regulatorerna utvärderades i tre tester som bland annat testade deras robusthet.</p><p>Fuzzy-regulatorn och fuzzy-P-regulatorn lyckades reglera systemet bra. When pushing the accelerator pedal too hard during an acceleration, the wheel can loose traction and start spinning, which leads to a worsen vehicle control and also wears out the tyres faster. The traction control system prevents the wheels from spinning and tries to make the tyres maintain maximum traction.</p><p>The purpose of this master’s thesis is to evaluate different control methods and to investigate possible ways to control the traction. This is a difficult control problem due to its nonlinearity and the fact that the friction is an unknown parameter.</p><p>For the investigation, a model of the wheel dynamics and a model of the powertrain have been developed in Matlab’s simulation program Simulink. Furthermore, three different controllers have been designed; a fuzzy controller, a fuzzy-P controller and a PI controller. The controllers were evaluated in three test cycles that among others tested their robustness.</p><p>The fuzzy controller and the fuzzy-P controller managed to control the system very well. The PI controller, however, did not work satisfactory, mainly because of its need of a desired value.</p>

Control system integration in ADAMS : With emphasis on hauler Automatic Traction Control system

The thesis investigates control system integration in ADAMS and the thesis presents appropriate knowledge related to the topic as multi body system, acting forces between road and wheels, equation of motion regarding to the haulers, traction control system and differential locks. The emphasis of the thesis is to implement and test the automatic traction control (ATC) for the hauler into ADAMS and Simulink models. The ATC models are based on certain requirements provided by Volvo Construction Equipment. As expected, results indicate that the ATC model operates during simulation for various road conditions. Nevertheless, the ATC model includes a few defects which are observed in results. The significant achievement of the thesis is a great collaboration between ADAMS and Simulink model.

Permeability and Mechanotransduction in Aging Endothelial Cells

<p>Complications from cardiovascular disease, such as a heart attack or a stroke, represent the leading cause of death in the United States and many developed and developing countries. Atherosclerosis is the primary pathology underlying cardiovascular disease. It is caused by an increase in endothelial cell (EC) permeability, leading to the buildup of cholesterol and lipids which form the atherosclerotic plaque. Accelerated aging in regions of atherosclerosis contribute to the development and progression of the disease. The global hypothesis that motivated this research was that activation of deacetylase antioxidant regulator, Sirtuin1 (SIRT1), improved function in senescent endothelial cells ECs by increasing the integrity of cell-cell junctions. In turn, this led to elevated EC permeability, a decline in the response to shear stress, and elevated traction forces.</p><p>Aging of hCB-ECs significantly increased permeability due to changes in tight junction protein localization and phosphorylation. Activation of SIRT1 significantly reduced permeability in aged hCB-ECs and restored junction integrity. ECs under flow also exhibited changes in cell junctions with increasing age. Aged hCB-ECs were less responsive to shear stress, exhibiting lower levels of atheroprotective genes, KLF2 and eNOS. Activation of SIRT1 in aged hCB-ECs restored the response to shear stress by altering localization and phosphorylation of adherens junction protein, VE-cadherin. The endothelial glycocalyx is a layer of proteoglycans and glycoproteins on the surface of ECs that is important in maintaining EC barrier function. In aging ECs, the glycocalyx was thinner and less dense. However, activation of SIRT1 restored the structure of the glycocalyx, suggesting that the positive effect of SIRT1 on elevated permeability in aged hCB-ECs may also be due to restoration of the glycocalyx. Aged hCB-ECs also exhibited elevated traction forces for measurements done with single cells, cell clusters (2 to 3 cells), and cell monolayers (20 to 30 cells). The elevated traction forces correlated with altered actin localization and increased actin filament thickness. Activation of SIRT1 reduced traction forces and decreased actin stress fiber thickness in aged hCB-ECs, suggesting that the effects of SIRT1 on cell-cell junctions alters binding of junction proteins to the actin cytoskeleton and generation of cell traction forces. Together, these results implicate an important role for SIRT1 in regulating permeability and mechanotransduction in aging endothelium.</p> / Dissertation

A comparison of permanent magnet motor structures for traction drive applications in hybrid electric vehicles /

This thesis presents a detailed comparison of the torque-speed characteristics of three permanent magnet synchronous machine designs based on how the magnets are mounted. The machines investigated are an interior permanent magnet machine, an interior-rotor surface-mounted machine and an exterior-rotor surface-mounted machine. They are designed for traction drives in hybrid electric vehicles. Two sets of comparisons based on the same machine volume and starting torque are performed. Important issues, such as machine mass and cost, cogging torque, and flux-weakening capability are addressed. Computer simulations were performed to estimate their performances and the results are presented. Design guidelines and tradeoffs of their performances are extracted from the simulation results. Relative strengths and limitations of different PM machine types are highlighted.
