Analysis of Traffic Accidents at Daytona Beach in Volusia County, State of Florida

Hajian, Mohammad Reza 01 April 1980 (has links) (PDF)
Anyone who has been tempted to cross a beach or walk along a beach is aware of the potential conflicts that can arise between pedestrians and vehicles. The competing use of the beach space results in conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians; many times the pedestrian's disregard for signed pedestrian safety provisions in the close vicinity and on the space allocated for car lanes results in avoidable conflicts. This report addresses the pedestrian and vehicle interaction at Daytona Beach in Volusia County of the State of Florida. This report has consolidated accident data for the period January 1, 1977 through July 22, 1979. The information was obtained through the Volusia county Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Based on this information, suggestions have been given for continued improvement of the traffic accident situation at Daytona Beach.

Evaluation of a server intervention program for preventing drunk driving

Russ, Nason Wayne January 1986 (has links)
As part of the national effort to reduce drunk driving, servers of alcohol are being held liable for their alcohol-serving behavior with increasing frequency. In response to these drunk driving prevention efforts, the Training for Intervention' Procedures by Servers of Alcohol (TIPS) program was developed to teach servers skills thought necessary for acceptable standards of practice for serving alcoholic beverages. The current study evaluated the potential of this program to aid in decreasing alcoholimpaired driving. Subjects were 17 waiters, waitresses, and bartenders who were employed at two bars. After the baseline period, the servers completed successfully the 6-hour TIPS training course. Research assistants posing as regular patrons (i.e., 'pseudopatrons') visited two target bars throughout the course of the study. These pseudopatrons set the occasion for server intervention to occur by attempting to drink six alcoholic beverages in two hours. Naturalistic data were collected by having a partner with a hidden microphone record all interactions between the server and pseudopatron. The partner also noted any signs of intoxication exhibited by the pseudopatron. The results revealed that servers who had received TIPS training initiated more interventions than untrained personnel. Moreover, pseudopatrons served by TIPS trained personnel had significantly lower blood-alcohol levels and exhibited fewer signs of intoxication than those served by untrained servers. These results suggest that, if implemented on a large scale, the TIPS program has the potential to reduce drunk driving by helping to decrease the exit blood-alcohol levels of bar patrons. The need to investigate the maintenance of server intervention behavior is discussed and other suggestions for future research are presented. / Ph. D.

Analýza příčin a důsledků dopravních nehod v silniční nákladní přepravě / Analysis of causes and consequences of traffic accidents in road goods conveyance

STANĚK, Petr January 2012 (has links)
This work describes general view of a traffic accident in order to introdukce non-specific features of traffic accidents. The objective of this work is deeper understanding of this issue, of the difference between the need for improving the participants skills and the repressive measures introduced in the attempt to guarantee the observance of fundamental legal standards.

Safety Effectiveness of Red Light Treatments for Red Light Running

Olson, Carl Scott 29 November 2012 (has links)
Crashes resulting from automobiles running a red light are typically severe in nature. One way to try to reduce the number and severity of these types of crashes is by increasing the red clearance interval of a traffic signal. In Portland, Oregon, eight intersections received a variety of treatments including red extensions. Determining which treatment had what effect can be difficult to weed out. Using a combination of crash analysis and a model simulating an intersection with red extensions, this paper describes the estimated impact of red light running intersection upgrades and red extensions on crashes. By performing a variety of before and after crash analysis, a reduction of angle crashes after treatments was detected, with a crash modification factor of 0.64 +/- 0.28 using the Empirical-Bayes method. Output from the simple simulation also suggest that red light running crashes can be reduced with red extension technology and confirms crash modification values determined from the Empirical-Bayes method.

Zvyšování bezpečnosti v dopravě s ohledem na oceňování lidského života / Quantification of expenses in case of human death due to traffic accident and finding ways how to prevent them

Slánský, Josef January 2011 (has links)
This diploma thesis examines the issue of acceptability of a particular transportation project. It is objective is to capture the expenses which arise from a traffic accident. on this basis the goal is to express all expenses of the human death and to compare them with the specific transportation project. In addition to this, different means of accident prevention are to be figured out within the support of public safety. The whole thesis is split into four parts. The first part describes the accidents on Czech roads. The second part deals with the specific expression methodology of the human death. The third shows the real transportation project and the last section evaluates if the expenditure on the implementation of particular project exceed the expenses caused by the accident.

Dopravní nehody a jejich vliv na příjmy a výdaje rozpočtu České republiky. / Traffic Accidents and their Impact on Revenues and Expenditures of the Czech Republic.

KROPÁČKOVÁ, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
The main aim of my thesis is the analysis of the traffic accidents and their cause on the roads of the Czech Republic. The first part of my thesis deals with the theoretical outcome of this matter which is necessary for further cover of my work.It is followed up with a practical part in which all statistic data, that had been used for the assessment of the situation, have been worked out.The methods the data have been coverd are the endorsement method, method of sequence and the method of respected sequence. In the frame of this thesis the comparison of the Czech Republic with a chosen EU state has been done. The secondary aim of my thesis is to find out the impact of the accidents on the revenues of the state budget, particularly of the problematic groups that cause the accidents on the roads. In the last part of my thesis there is a summary of all analysed results of the matter and subsequently safety measures for potential improvement of the situation have been done.

Příčiny vzniku dopravních nehod při přepravě nebezpečných látek. / Forming factors of traffic accidents in transporting dangerous substances.

SANDOROVÁ, Radka January 2010 (has links)
The thesis ``Causes of Accident Occurrence in Transporting Dangerous Substances{\crq}q is aimed at the topic of road accidents in transport of dangerous substances, which is one of its inseparable parts on which extra stress is placed and cannot be classified as common transport. Road transport of dangerous substances is subject to the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR). Although the safety of road transport of dangerous goods is broadly secured in the sense of ADR there are still numerous factors affecting the transport course itself, which may lead to a road accident. Road accidents of vehicles transporting dangerous goods often involve leaks of dangerous substances and subsequent threat to human lives and health, damage on environment and property. This is why transport of dangerous substances definitely belongs to activities with higher risk rate. The fact that the time and place of accident occurrence cannot be determined in advance even escalates the danger. The thesis is aimed at surveying the situation in the field of causes of accident occurrence in transporting dangerous substances, discovering the level of awareness of the problems of dangerous substance transport and the causes of road accidents among traffic participants and proposing concrete preventive measures. Quantitative research was performed to gain information necessary to confirm my hypotheses. Secondary analysis of the data from the Police of the Czech Republic archives was used as the method for confirmation of hypotheses. A questionnaire survey was used for determination of the level of awareness among traffic participants. The hypotheses set in the thesis, that the causes of accident occurrence in transporting dangerous substances have direct influence on accident frequency and common road traffic participants do not have sufficient knowledge of the problems of dangerous substance transport have been confirmed.

Accident liability and primary process thinking : a study in ego psychology

Nell, Oelrich January 1975 (has links)
Serious efforts must be made to combat the high accident rate on the roads in the Republic of South Africa. The same spirit which exists in the field of medicine when there are evidences that an epidemic is beginning to take its toll, must come into being amongst those who are concerned with traffic and its problems. The public itself needs to become more aware of road safety. Many associations and institutions have been created to assist with the inculcation of the road safety ideal. The National Road Safety Council, which creates opportunities for investigation into aspects of road safety must continue to expand its sphere of influence. The research project contained on the following pages represents an attempt to contribute to the human factor in traffic safety, particularly by making a closer study of the driver of the motor vehicle. The writer is concerned with the carnage that is caused by road accidents. His previous study of personality and particularly of the projective techniques of assessment has prompted a consideration of the problem.
