Both existing buildings of designed Training Center are situated on the southern edge of the Tomioka Silk Mill above the steep river side. An Evaluation of the Implementation of a CALL Program in a Pilot Curriculum at the Provo LDS Missionary Training Center

Betteridge, Amberly Patch 05 August 2011 (has links)
The current study examines the implementation of one computer-assisted language learning program (CALL) called Technology Assisted Language Learning (TALL) in a pilot language curriculum at the LDS Missionary Training Center. Because CALL implementation is determined in large part by how successfully users are able to use the computer program to learn language, a primary purpose of this study was to investigate which implementation issues affected the language learning success of the missionaries that used TALL in the pilot curriculum. A survey was, therefore, designed and administered to 86 missionaries from French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin language areas in order to determine which CALL user characteristics were predictive of TALL user success. Through a regression analysis , this study found that the most highly predictive factors on TALL user success were (a) a high indication of pro-activity on the part of the learners in figuring out how to use TALL to their advantage, (b) a high indication of goal-orientation in approaching TALL use with a specific purpose in mind, and (c) a high indication of interaction with the TALL program through frequent use of the electronic glossary feature, the "listen to your voice" feature, and the strategy of repeating out loud the words and phrases encountered while working on TALL. The missionary survey was also analyzed descriptively, and results from this analysis revealed that missionaries in the pilot curriculum felt that more training on how to use TALL effectively would have helped them to be more successful. Focus groups with the missionaries were also conducted in order to better understand their experiences with the TALL program. The analysis of these focus groups revealed that although many missionaries reported liking TALL, there were many who did not sufficiently understand how to successfully use it within the pilot curriculum; a lack of training seemed to be a big contributor to this lack of user success. Additionally, focus groups found that missionaries believed the TALL listening activities to be the most helpful TALL activities. A teacher survey was also designed and administered to the 19 teachers who taught missionaries in the pilot curriculum. Results of the teacher survey revealed a desire for more formal training on how to train missionaries to use the TALL program effectively. In conclusion and based on evidence in the literature and from this study, suggestions are provided for more effective teacher and learner training on TALL.

Community vocational success of institutionalized mental retardates as a function of coping style

Schilling, Jane C. 01 January 1973 (has links)
In May, 1968, Fairview Hospital and Training Center (for the Mentally Retarded) located in Salem, Oregon, initiated its first Manpower Development and Training Program (MDT) coupled with an On-The-Job Training Program (OJT). The OJT portion of the training phase was eventually renamed and is now known as the Jobs Optional Program (JOP). Since the start of the program, a total of 273 residents have participated in the institutional phase and 131 in the JOP phase. The purpose of this study was to develop a scale that would predict a trainee’s (or potential trainee’s) success or failure in the JOP phase of the program. It was felt that an individual’s method of coping with everyday patterns of living would influence his success or failure in employment. For example, it was felt that if the trainee was too withdrawn or too hostile that his chances for successful employment would decrease.

Velký dům pro malé město / A Great House for a Small Town

Krejčířová, Zuzana January 2016 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is the conversion and extension of the former School of Industrial High School in Rousínov furniture and expansion of housing for the elderly. School buildings were built in the 70s of the 20th century and today are only partially and temporarily used, and are waiting for its rebirth. The aim of the project is to open the area to people and incorporate it into the daily life of citizens Rousínov. Cinema, restaurants, galleries, clubs and housing - it's all part of the new city center. Already incurred background builds housing for the elderly, which is its location in the heart of a quality place for the next stage of life. By activating these functions is an isolated island in the city center becomes a full-fledged part of the public space Rousínov. The first stage is the conversion of schools to the cultural and community center. Slogan conversion is cleansing. Clean up objects from unnecessary structures and layers of history. Show support structure and inject new energy into the buildings. The construction itself enables spatial play of vertical and horizontal surfaces. Space clubrooms and galleries are open to the second floor, housing units are designed as maisonettes. Everything is simple and functional. It remains only the pace of life, which objects to bring residents Rousínov. As a next stage will be created in the area of housing for seniors. Demand for housing for the elderly is still high and it's no different in Rousínov and surroundings. In the House of care service that is not on the edge and the capacity is insufficient. Therefore, the potential use of school premises in the town center is a suitable solution for senior housing. The proposal does not find one universal solution for all, but aims to promote the uniqueness and future residents based on their individual needs. Therefore, there is no one big complex retirement home, but three different objects according to the degree of autonomy of the population.
