The public University is a dream for many young people. The transformation of this dream in reality can be supported by a set of factors involved that interact with each other. The analysis of the factors of success and failure provides important elements for the development of strategies and public policies that optimize the investment in projects, enabling a better preparation for most vulnerable groups as a way to provide greater democratization of access to the public University. This present study has as a theme, the analysis of success and failure of the trajectory of the candidates for the entrance exam of UFRN. For both, the social demographic, cultural and familiar were observed, including the high school trajectory and expectations with the access to higher education for 113,984 students who tried to join the UFRN during the period from 2010 to 2013. For analysis of these dimensions, it was used the test of Chi-square independence and the generalized linear model: logistic regression. The results indicate that all dimensions influence the success of these students. Among other discoveries, it was noted: the) men are more likely to succeed than women; b) self-proclaimed black students exhibit more failure than other ethnicities; C) students who have studied in preparatory courses to public and private networks have similar chances of success when compared with those who did not do any kind of preparation; and d) children of illiterate parents have greater success in admission to higher education when compared to those whose parents have education level higher.
