Adaptation of leaf morphology of the Eurycoma longifolia Jack to different site conditions in the province of Thua Thien Hue, Central Vietnam

Van, Thi Yen, Nguyen, Hoang Loc, Nguyen, Thi Hong Mai, Krabel, Doris 29 December 2021 (has links)
Leaf area and stomata are important parameters in studies of taxonomic classification since both parameters might reflect the plant adaptation mechanisms to different environmental conditions. This study analyzed Eurycoma longifolia Jack leaf traits in different ecological regions (moisture zone: A Luoi, Bach Ma, Nam Dong; dry zone: Phong Dien) and leaves of seedlings in the nursery. The study used scanners and Images to measure leaf area; imagej and the AxioVision SE64 softwares were used to evaluate stomatal density by separating the lower cuticle through a clear nail polish impression. Our results showed that the leaf area of mature trees from the dry zone is smaller (355.7 and 484.1 cm2/leaf), however, the stomata density is higher than that of the humid area (284.4 and 137.9 stomata/mm2). Under the same nursery conditions, the seedlings' leaf area was similar while seedlings' stomatal density, originated from the dry zone, was lower. Results indicate that the stomatal density changes as an adaptation to changing habitat conditions. This study gives indicates that E. longifolia is a tree species with high adaptability given the leaf morphology changes under a changing climate. Therefore, this tree species should be a priority for planting in order to increase biodiversity in different ecological regions.

The production of native tree species seedlings of the Atlantic, the hydroeletric plant of Itaipu Binational aims to reforest the riparian vegetation of ltaipu Lake, and constitute the Biological Corridor which will connect Iarge areas of protected forest in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. This venture is considered by UNESCO one of the largest environmental conservation projects of the world and includes the Morro do Diabo State Park, in the extreme west of São Paulo, the lguaçu National Park. between Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul the green bands around the ltaipu power plant reservoir, the lguaçu and the lguazú National Park in Argentina, and the Turvo State Park in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. ln seedling production, the company gardens use a commercial substrate and plastic tubes of 115 cm3 of capacity. The experiments were conducted in the greenhouse of the Soil Department of the Federal University of Viçosa to evaluate the effects of macronutrients doses (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S) on the growth of Cedrella fissilis Vellozo (Cedro), Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub (Canafístula) and Tabebuia serratifolia (Vahl) Nichols. (Ipê-amarelo), produced in tubes and substrate. The seedlings after 90 days of emergency received five doses of each macronutrient by cover application. The experimental design used was the completely randomized, with three species, five doses, six nutrients, with five repetitions with four plants each, towling 90 treatments and 1800 plants. After l40 days, for each species it was evaluated the number of leaves, stems, diameter and height of the neck, and determined the total dry weight and subdivided into leaves, stem, aerial part (MSPA), the dry mass relation of the aerial part with the root. We also evaluated the Ievels of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S in leaves and roots. The increase of N doses províded significant growth for the three evaluated species. The increase of Mg doses significantly influenced the growth characteristics in canafístula plants and Ipê-amarelo. The increase of S doses favored the increments in plant height characteristícs of Ipê-amarelo. For the nutrients that provide significant responses by the regression analysis the recommended doses for maximum production were in the order of 200 mg dm-3 N, 240 mg dm-3 of Mg and 100 mg dm-3 of S. For the zero dose, the N in the maximum applied dose (200 mg dm-3) for plants of Cedro, Ipê-amarelo and Canafístula provided an increase of 6.4, 20.5 and 20.8% in MSPA. Rcspectively, the Mg in the maximum evaluated dose (240 mg dm-3) for seedlings of Ipê-amarelo and Canafístula provided an increment of 7.7 and 8.3% in MSPA, respectively, and S for the ipe scedlings. in the maximum evaluated dose (100 mg dm-3) provided an increase of 5.5% in the MSPA. The critical levels of N in the leaf tissues in Cedro plants, Canafístula and Ipê-amarelo, were 23.07, 20.61 and 22.68 g kg-1, and in the roots 10.83, 9.8 and 14. 19 g kg-1, respectively. The critical Mg levels in lhe leaf tissues in Canafístula and lpê-amareelo plants. were 0.96 and 1.76 g kg-1, and in the roots 0.57 and l.l9 g kg-1, respectively. The critical S levels in lpê-amarelo plants in the leaf tissues. were O.49 g kg-1 and 0.52 g kg-1 in the roots. The other nutrients did not show the recommended doses for the maximum production, justified probably by the presence of these nutrients in the substrate, near or above the critical level. ln general, the response of significant growth with the increase of N availabilíty is possibly Iinked to favorable conditions of leaching in the production of forest species grown in plastic tubes. For the advantage of the balance and availability of nutrients in the commercial substrate used, it is recommended the use of additional fertilization in Mg substrate for Canafístula and Ipê-amarelo, S for the lpê-amarelo and N for the three species.

The effect of the spatial scale of tree harvesting on woody seedling establishment and tree dynamic at Ongoye Forest Reserve.

Louw, Sharon Lilla. January 2010
Subsistence harvesting pressure in most African countries focuses on the small and mostly unreproductive trees found in the understorey stratum and can have potentially insidious ecological effects. Harvest intensities at Ongoye Forest Reserve (OFR) vary significantly across the forest (range = 87 - 567 stumps ha-1), with harvesting focussed exclusively on poles from tree species that grow only in the understorey. Growing evidence indicates that seedling establishment from the pool of species available beneath a closed canopy is greatly influenced by the differential ability of species to take advantage of the short burst of resources in newly-created understorey gaps. Seedling dynamics in these gaps may determine forest tree diversity and dynamics and consequently harvest gaps have the potential to significantly affect natural forest dynamics. This study examined seedling establishment beneath intact understorey and within artificially created understorey gaps of different sizes (single stem gaps, two stem gaps, four stem gaps, eight stem gaps and control ‘gap’, where no stems were removed) that simulated different spatial scales of harvesting intensity of understorey trees. This experiment examined the proposition that successful seedling establishment and natural succession is strongly dependent on the scale of harvesting. Seedling abundance, species richness, irradiance (photosynthetically active radiation and the red to far-red ratio), soil nutrient composition and herbaceous layer cover was measured in each gap size in 2005 before harvesting, and again in 2007. The mean seedling abundance was not significantly different among gap treatments, although there was a trend towards more seedlings in 2005 than 2007. Seedling abundance in all gaps was greater than at control sites beneath the intact understorey. There was a continuous increase in seedling richness in 2007. An average species richness of 4.3 was recorded in the control sites, beneath a shaded understorey. Here, seedling richness increased by 18.24% with the removal of a single understorey tree (Gap 1). Species richness increased with increasing experimental gap size increased so that the greatest mean species richness (6.2 species) was recorded where eight neighbouring trees were removed (Gap 8). Light transmission reaching the seedling stratum was greater in larger gaps and there was a trend towards more seedlings and greater species richness in the higher light environments of such gaps. Soil nutrient levels did not influence seedling abundance and species richness in gaps. The herbaceous layer suppressed seedling establishment. In the largest gaps (115.4m2) created by harvesting, seedling composition was more deterministic than in small gaps where seedling establishment and density was random, accordingly there were more species in larger gaps from a more defined species assemblage. Current harvesting levels of pole-sized understorey trees, where only small gaps are created in the understorey, are unlikely to alter forest dynamics and species composition at OFR. This study demonstrates that harvesting eight adjacent trees crosses the harvest intensity threshold between sustainable natural tree dynamics and a potential successional shift to an alternative state. Clearly, for natural dynamics to be maintained harvesting intensities will have to be regulated. / http://hdl.handle.net/10413/631 / Thesis (M.Env.Dev.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2010.
