Previous issue date: 2016-12-30 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / This master thesis deals with educational processes in music related to the trombone in Brazil through the
identification, selection and analysis of pedagogical practices, as well as the evidence and the formation process of the
Brazilian Trombone School. The theoretical contribution is supported by Leão (2013) - music research methodology,
Freire (2011), Tardif (2000 and 2002) and Gauthier (2013) - education - Shigunov Neto & Maciel (2008) and Amorim
(2012) - society and culture -, as well as other works that focus on and discuss the musical and trombonistic knowledge
and practices, such as Santos (1999 and 2016), Gagnard (1974), Kemp (1995) and Costa (1999). Within an interpretive
perspective of research, the philosophical approach used was hermeneutics, combined with the qualitative paradigm,
also using quantitative resources. In addition, the research had a descriptive and historical character, pointing to
educational experiences through interviews and data in order to systematize the teaching-learning approaches of the
Brazilian trombone aspect. In order to answer questions about the Brazilian Trombone School and its artistic-
instrumental construction processes in relation to teaching and learning, the research was conducted in two stages:
bibliographical survey and field research. This fact was justified by the fact that, up to the present moment, there is still
no systematization of this process, nor cataloging of documents referring to its description, and, as such, of the
pedagogical practices employed. It was believed that this systematization could contribute positively to the didactic-
methodological orientation, being able to suggest resolutions for possible pedagogical problems. The methodological
process of this research was based on bibliographic review and data collection. Thus, data obtained from oral sources
(10 Brazilian trombonist teachers interviewed), theoretically based, served to discuss the teaching-learning process of
the trombone. For the empirical analysis, for the application of the questionnaires, renowned trombonist teachers of
recognized trombone study centers in Brazil were selected and interviewed, for which the same questionnaire was
applied in a semi-open format, with a pre-elaborated script of Questions that specially questioned about the
specificities of the musical experience, the knowledge about the study in Brazil and its pedagogical practices. This
research was validated (ensuring confidentiality and reliability - in addition to legal and moral protection of the
researched and the researcher) of the Informed Consent Term - TCLE (in compliance with the legal terms and the
Ethics Committee - CEP). This dissertation is justified by the social relevance of the theme for music education and
contemporary society at this time of changes in the public educational policies that reach the teaching of music in
Brazil. Through the verification of all content, it was possible to conclude on the existence of the Brazilian Trombone
School and its level of development, as well as on the methods, methodologies, strategies, and participants that act in
the implementation of the same. It is estimated that the results of the final product can contribute to the advancement of
knowledge in the area of music and education, and to the affirmation/strengthening of the Brazilian Trombone School.
Tardif (2000 e 2002) e Gauthier (2013) – educação –, Shigunov Neto & Maciel (2008) e Amorim (2012) – sociedade e
música no Brasil.

This thesis, in conjunction with two recitals given toward fulfillment of a doctoral degree in pedagogical studies and instrumental musical practices, addresses collective teaching of the trombone in Brazil and examines the trombone from three perspectives: historical, educational and that of musical performance. Although the topic is not new, the project offers a reflection, on the trombone and how it is taught, unexplored mainly due to the repertoire selected for this study. Indeed, to our knowledge, written musical arrangements of the Brazilian popular repertoire have, until now, not been undertaken with a view both toward public performance as well as with pedagogical aims. The chosen pieces were selected because of their content, which presents a musical vocabulary related to the regional cultures of four of the five geographic regions of Brazil: the Northeast, the Midwest, the Southwest and the South. During the course of this project, the selected pieces were arranged such that they could serve as pedagogical tools for trombone training in the context of Brazilian music. The arrangements were designed for small ensembles, in which the trombone often plays the role of soloist. Thus, beyond the concepts and techniques gained through traditional training, performing the arrangements gave the doctoral student and soloist the opportunity to present, through the language of Brazilian popular music improvisation, the outcomes of processes developed over the past two years. Scores are appended to the text of the thesis, in order to illustrate certain remarks and with the goal of supporting future research in this area. The thesis is divided into four chapters, which, although presented separately, are closely related. The first chapter provides an overview of the history of the instrument through the five centuries of its existence. The second chapter focuses on the history of Brazilian music and on the presence of the trombone in Brazil. The third chapter begins with an overview of the artistic and musical education in Brazil in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, then addresses the situation of teaching the trombone in Brazil, ultimately leading to a proposal to promote learning the trombone in the context of collective music education. Finally, the fourth chapter looks back at the musical experiences of the first part of this project, as an account of instrumental music practice, establishing links and following lines of thought with the perspective of teaching and learning the trombone.

The Online trombone journal : a case study of credibility, accessibility, and permanence in electronic journal publishingHuman, Richard B. January 2001 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to answer the question: How does the Online Trombone Journal address the issues of credibility, accessibility, and permanence in the publishing of an electronic journal?Documents from the Online Trombone Journal were examined in order to discover what specific methods are in place addressing credibility. Issues of prominent brass-related print journals were examined in order to locate article citations. Interviews were conducted with authors who are published in both an established print journal and the Online Trombone Journal. The Online Trombone Journal was searched for in both standard print indices and also on-line search engines in order to determine accessibility. To investigate permanence, on-line documents at the Online Trombone Journal concerning archiving were investigated, and an interview conducted with the publisher. The existence of a Review Board at the Online Trombone Journal, as well as standard guidelines for the review process indicates that credibility is addressed through peer-review of articles. Research showed that articles in the Online Trombone Journal have not yet begun to appear in other scholarly resources. In the area of accessibility, the content of the Online Trombone Journal is not yet indexed in standard music indices. The Online Trombone Journal does rank very high in searches using the term "trombone" on Internet search engines.Addressing permanence, research shows that apart from visiting the Online Trombone Journal web site, there is no other method for accessing its content. Thepublisher of the Online Trombone Journal indicates that a CD-ROM of all articles will be published and distributed to libraries and collection agencies in order to address the issue of permanence. The Online Trombone Journal has done an effective job of addressing the concerns of credibility and accessibility in on-line journal publishing. Permanence, an ongoing concern for all a journals, is a concern to the publisher, and will be addressed in the near future. / School of Music

A Study and Analysis of Trombonist Andy Martin's Improvisations: Thematic Hooks as a Teaching/Learning ToolJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: This project sheds light on trombonist Andy Martin's improvisation and provides tools for further learning. A biographical sketch gives background on Martin, establishing him as a newer jazz master. Through the transcription and analysis of nine improvised solos, Martin's improvisational voice and vocabulary is deciphered and presented as a series of seven thematic hooks. These patterns, rhythms, and gestures are described, analyzed, and presented as examples of how each is used in the solos. The hooks are also set as application exercises for learning jazz style and improvisation. These exercises demonstrate how to use Martin's hooks as a means for furthering one's own improvisation. A full method for successful transcription is also presented, along with the printed transcriptions and their accompanying information sheets. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2013
