Research and development department of the industry are generally depend on the experience rule to design products. But the designing process may be very time consuming. The experience, which the former designer accumulates, is probably unable to pass on to new personnel. This will makes new engineer have to use the traditional way to seek the solution slowly. This paper will study the socket, which test the integrated circuit, with forced convection. To discuss the difference of the inlet and outlet positions and geometry when the high-pressure air flow into the socket. And the fluid distribution may have the influence on heat dissipation result. This study uses Taguchi method with CFD software FLUENT, with different design parameters, to do the numerical simulation on the fluid field. To reach the design parameter of the optimization, Fluent uses the grid adaptive technique; it adjusts and optimizes the grid according to a result of calculation, and then made the result of calculation more accurate to offer more reliable design considerations to the designer.

Assessment of computational strategies for modelling in-line tube banks

This thesis provides an assessment of various computational strategies for modelling the turbulent flow and heat transfer around in-line tube banks. The research has direct application to the heat exchanger of an Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR). The suitability and accuracy of different Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) techniques were investigated first on generic square in-line tube banks where experimental data are available. The assumption of flow periodicity in all three Cartesian directions is initially investigated whereby the domain size was varied. Wall-resolved Large Eddy Simulations (LES) predict an increasing flow asymmetry with decreasing tube spacing. Two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) models were simulated at the tube spacing known to be close to the flow pattern transition from symmetric to asymmetric. Marked differences were observed between the flow pattern predicted by turbulence models resolving the boundary layer and those that rely on wall functions. Ultimately, an improved understanding of the flow physics and heat transfer mechanisms encountered within in-line tube banks was gained. The assumption of flow periodicity was then removed and the effects of confining walls were investigated by reproducing experimental conditions. The correct pressure forces and heat transfer around the central tubes could only be accurately predicted when the walls in the crossflow direction were modelled. The inclusion of walls in the spanwise direction gave rise to small flow asymmetries which have been reported on similarly-spaced in-line tube banks. The latter half of the thesis focuses on the reasons for the enhanced thermal mixing and 3D secondary flow patterns observed in the in-line section of the AGR heat exchanger. A wall-resolved periodic LES was conducted at the lower Reynolds number of 11,000 along with URANS calculations of the full experimental conditions at both Reynolds numbers 11,000 and 66,000. These calculations required the use of High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities. Large 3D secondary flow structures were predicted that produced the same level of crossflow temperature drifting as that reported experimentally. Multiple upward and downward flow paths were observed which qualitatively explained why the experimental temperature profiles reported at different spanwise locations indicated multiple spirals (or secondary vortices). Quantification of the levels of thermal diffusion were investigated using both decaying temperature spikes and blanked tube platens. Thus the CFD provided recommendations about the thermal diffusivity assumptions used by the AGR heat exchanger code.

This thesis focuses on design of device to generate hot air. This generator is supposed to be used to perform thermal tests for a company. Introduction summarizes general knowledge about ventilators, heat transport in air flow, and pressure losses. Main part of the thesis describes development of the generator. Initial design was followed by selection of suitable solution variants, design of major parts of the generator supported by calculations and overall conception of the generator. Final part summarizes the achievements and economic analysis.

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo acerca dos principais parâmetros que caracterizam o fenômeno da biestabilidade em dois tubos dispostos lado a lado submetidos a escoamento cruzado turbulento. A técnica experimental da anemometria de fio quente em canal aerodinâmico é aplicada na medição das flutuações de velocidade do escoamento após os tubos. As séries temporais obtidas são utilizadas como dados de entrada para determinação das funções densidade de probabilidade (PDF) usando um modelo de mistura finita, de acordo com uma função t de Student assimétrica e com o auxílio do método de Monte Carlo. Transformadas de ondaletas discretas e contínuas são aplicadas na filtragem das séries temporais para determinadas bandas de frequências e na análise do conteúdo de energia destes sinais. Através de conceitos de sistemas caóticos, é realizada a reconstrução do atrator do problema pelo método dos atrasos temporais, a partir das séries experimentais de velocidade, permitindo a determinação da dimensão de imersão e o cálculo do maior expoente de Lyapunov. Os resultados mostram a existência de dois patamares distintos de velocidade média nas séries temporais, correspondentes aos dois modos do escoamento, cada qual com números de Strouhal e funções densidade de probabilidade distintas. Uma análise conjunta das componentes axial e transversal do escoamento e suas PDF indicam as regiões no plano de medições onde o fenômeno se manifesta, sendo que reconstruções da trajetória filtrada das séries temporais para determinadas bandas de frequências apresentam características caóticodeterminísticas. O maior expoente de Lyapunov das séries experimentais é positivo, o que é um indício de comportamento caótico. / This work presents a study of the main parameters that characterize the phenomenon of bistability in two tubes placed side by side submitted to turbulent crossflow. The experimental technique of hot wire anemometry in aerodynamic channel is applied in the measurement of velocity fluctuations of the flow after the tubes. The time series obtained are used as input data for determining the probability density functions (PDF) using a finite mixture model, according to an asymmetric Student t function and with the aid of a Monte Carlo method. Wavelet transforms are applied in discrete and continuous filtering of time series for certain frequency bands and in the analysis of the energy content of these signals. By means of chaotic systems concepts, the attractor reconstruction of the problem is performed using the method of time delays from the experimental series of velocity, allowing the determination of the embedding dimension and calculating the largest Lyapunov exponent. The results show the existence of two different levels of mean velocity in time series, corresponding to two flow modes, each one with different Strouhal numbers and probability density functions. A joint analysis of axial and transverse components of flow and its PDF indicate the regions in the measurement plan where the phenomenon is manifested, and reconstructions of the trajectory of the filtered time series for certain frequency bands have chaotic-deterministic characteristics. The largest Lyapunov exponent of experimental series is positive, which is an indication of chaotic behavior.
