Where Intellect and Intuition Converge: Epistemological Errancies in the Poetry of Jorie Graham

Pettinger, Terry Lynn O'Brien 06 March 2001 (has links)
Over the past two decades, American poet Jorie Graham has composed six books of poems. Graham struggles to understand how we make sense of the world through thinking grounded in the logical operations of reason and through thinking that operates as more of a detached wandering that enables direct experiential participation in the present moment-modes of thought occasionally differentiated as "intellect" and "intuition." Throughout her work, Graham repeatedly experiments with ways to "frustrate" the intellect in order for intuition to wander over an idea while at the same time she relies on the intellect to rescue the mind from directionless wandering. In her early poetry Graham explores ways of defining and describing what it feels like to think. Later, she enacts thinking within the lines of her poems, sometimes allegorizing the operation of the intellect and intuition and sometimes provoking readers into an experience of one particular way of thinking through the act of reading. This study examines Graham's various successes and failures as she struggles to discover "blossoming" moments of balance between the controlling intellect and the wandering intuition. Beginning with the origins of this line of thinking in Graham's early work, this study traces the poet's path of development through each book of poems in order to demonstrate the back and forth momentum shifts of intellect giving way to intuition and intuition being organized by rational thought. Through her epistemological errancies, her wanderings within and without ways of knowing, Graham discovers "blossoming" moments of wholeness where both modes of thought meet "in solution, unsolved." / Master of Arts

Tensões e ambivalências no Canzoniere de Umberto Saba / Tensions and ambivalences in the Canzoniere of Umberto Saba.

Figueredo, Dheisson Ribeiro 20 August 2010 (has links)
This dissertation intends to read the work Il Canzoniere, by Umberto Saba, based on the tensed descendent line which begins with the collection Trieste e una donna, and which point of lower temperature is Cose leggere e vaganti. We sought to focus our reading in the tensions and the ambivalence that go across the poetic production of the Triestian in such period. So, this work is structured in three chapters: on the first one, we centered the attention in Trieste e una donna and tried to understand how the confluent relation between the lyric-self and the sensory is established, as we seek to seize the elementary things and its consequent acceptance of life in all its variety; on the second one, we approached La serena disperazione and Poesie scritte durante la guerra, keeping the focus on the dynamics between permanence and rupture, being based on the motives to attempt the recall of the resources used in previous collections; on the third one, we approached Cose leggere e vaganti, in order to attempt to understand the apparent lightness which goes along the collection, and to show how, in a last stage, it is underlain the opposition between weight and lightness. Within this work, we seek to emphasize that the descendent tension line would be, in a last level, associated to the scape of pain and suffering.

[en] SOPHIA DE MELLO BREYNER ANDRESENNULLS NAVEGAÇÕES / [pt] NA ROTA DAS NAVEGAÇÕES: SOPHIA DE MELLO BREYNER ANDRESEN

VIRGINIA BAZZETTI BOECHAT 28 February 2005 (has links)
[en] In 1983, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen published Navegações, a book containing twenty-five poems written between from 1977 and 1982 about the Portuguese maritime discoveries. Considering this book as a development of a theme Andresen had long been nurturing in her preview works, in our reading of these poetic texts we focus on four essential issues: the choice of such a controversial subject shortly after the 1974 revolution in Portugal; the intertextuality of these poems and the historical references in them; the significance of the sixteenth- century maps reproduced in the first edition; the concept of gaze as it appears in these poems.
