To Measure Wind Speed using the theory of One-dimensional Ultrasonic Anemometer

Zhou, Yufeng, Wang, Yan January 2011 (has links)
Ultrasonic anemometer (UA) is a core application in natural environment measurement. As well known, mechanical anemometer works well in good weather but it is not suitable to be applied in bad environment such as polar region and upper air. On the other hand, ultrasonic anemometer works well in most situations. Moreover, ultrasonic anemometer has wider detectable wind speed range. It can be said that ultrasonic anemometer is a more advanced instrument to measure wind velocity. In this paper, the theory of ultrasonic anemometer is first discussed. Using the theory, a test bed is then designed and constructed to measure one-dimensional wind speed. Active Butterworth filter is introduced into the circuit in order to increase the stability and accuracy. Furthermore, we test the one-dimensional ultrasonic anemometer and compare the measured wind speed with theoretical wind speed measured by a thermal anemometer device. Error is also discussed and improvement has also made during the experiment.

REMOVING VEHICLE SPEED FROM APPARENT WIND VELOCITY

Weiss, Austin M. 01 January 2019 (has links)
Variable-rate technologies for sprayer applications stand to increase efficacy by ensuring the right amount of chemical is applied at the right location. However, external environmental factors such as droplet drift caused by variable ambient condition, are not yet integrated into modern sprayer systems. Real-time wind velocity measurements can be used to control droplet spectra for reducing spray drift by actuating a variable-orifice nozzle. This work aimed to develop data processing methods needed to filter noise and remove vehicle speed from wind velocity measurements collected with an ultrasonic anemometer aboard a moving platform. Using a global navigation satellite system (GNSS), vehicle speed was calculated in the field and subtracted from apparent wind velocity for comparison to static measurements. Experiments under stationary and dynamic sensor deployments were used to develop an algorithm to provide instantaneous local wind velocity and to better understand the local spatiotemporal variability of wind under field conditions.

Experimental and numerical study of entrainment phenomena in an impinging jet

Weinberger, Gottfried, Yemane, Yakob January 2010 (has links)
This thesis is primarily about the mapping and analyze of the phenomenon of an impinging jet by experimental measurements and numerical simulations by CFD. The mapping shows the characteristics of velocity in and around the impinging jet with different conditions. Additional studies were made by analyzing the pressure along the vertical jet axis, but also weight measurements were part of the investigation. The measurements covered the range from 10 m/s, 20 m/s and 30 m/s, which corresponds to a Reynolds number of 17 000, 34 000 and 50 000. The impinging jet is therefore considered to be highly turbulent. The main difference from previous studies is the use of the ultrasonic anemometer to measure the velocities. These create the ability of measuring the velocities on three coordinates. The jet’s contour was crucial to determine the penetration of ambient air flowing into the jet with an angle of around 88° and the entrainment of the ambient air multiple the jet volume flow. In comparison with CFD, the number of cells in the mesh design and the type of model plays a substantial role. The model k-ε Realized came closest to the experimentally measurements, while the SST k-ω and RNG k-ε EWF had far more entrainment of the ambient air into the impinging jet.

Křepelka, Pavel January 2011 (has links)
In the first section of this document, there are described principles of the wind measuring. Anemometers can be divides by physical principles to mechanical (propeller or cup), ultrasonic anemometers and thermoanemometers. This paper is focused to ultrasonic anemometers. In the next part, there are described principles of sound propagation in the atmosphere. There are studies of measurement theory and comparing of different approaches. Completed solutions are presented in patent exploration. Afterwards, there are introduction of market research. Important parameters of ultrasonic anemometers are highlighted. Main aim of work is designing prototype of ultrasonic anemometer. Software, hardware and construct of experimental anemometer were designed. Created anemometer was calibrated in aerodynamics tunnel and results were compared with simulation output.
