Investigating sustainable environmental design strategies into the architectural curriculum : a case study of the Tshwane University of Technology.

Van der Linde, Hendrik N. January 2013 (has links)
M. Tech. Architectural Technology / There is currently a substantial shortage of a trans-disciplinary generation of architectural graduates, competent to produce sustainable buildings, in the rapidly evolving 'green' South African construction industry. The purpose of this study is to explore the potential for the incorporation of Sustainable Environmental Design strategies, and the elements associated with the new government legislation regarding energy usage in buildings, into the architectural curriculum at the Tshwane University of Technology.

Experiences associated with student housing entreprenuership at Tshwane University of Technology.

Tswai, Ephraim Matsobane. January 2013 (has links)
M. Tech. Entrepreneurship / Suitable student accommodation is a crisis throughout South African universities, while specifically housing is in itself a problem in Gauteng province. The drastic increase in student enrollments in the South African higher education system since 1994 has compounded this problem as the provision of student accommodation has not kept pace with enrollments. This crisis has led to the emergence of entrepreneurs who capitalise on the growing demand for student accommodation. The aim of the study was to determine the demand for, as well as the extent and provision of student accommodation.

A conceptual analysis of a university of technology and its contribution to research and development

Lategan, Laetus O. K. January 2008 (has links)
Published Article / This paper provides a conceptual overview of one of the three types of university in the South African higher education band, namely the university of technology. The contention of the paper is that universities of technology should have the same core activities as the general or classical university, that is teaching, research and service. The differences between the types of university exist on a conceptual level and therefore also in their approach to science in general. The conceptual analysis illustrates how the university of technology contributes towards research and development. It is for this reason that this university type should be welcomed by the university sector. Its overall contribution to what a university is should be acknowledged.

South African Universities of Technology, globalisation and culture : a correlation

Thathiah, K.V. January 2013 (has links)
Published Article / The Humanities, Social Sciences and the creative arts are somewhat marginalised within the broader conceptualisation of the South African Universities of Technology and this could lead to a paucity of engagement with the critical challenges facing them. Globalisation, for example, is taken as desirable and neutral and that culture and context are relatively unimportant to their ongoing development. The challenges of globalisation and culture are explored as a critique on the fundamental conceptualisation of the institution-type and as a way of arguing for a more critical role for the Humanities, Social Sciences and the Creative Arts.

Attitudes of engineering staff and students to academic development classes at Tshwane University of Technology

Zengele, Thembeka 02 March 2007 (has links)
Student Number : 9207426M - MA research report - School of Literature and Language Studies - Faculty of Humanities / This report investigates the attitudes of the Engineering students and staff to academic development classes at the Tshwane University of Technology on the Soshanguve campus. This university services students from less privileged communities. Specifically, it is interested in why students feel the need for Academic Development to continue beyond the first year of study. This investigation will be done by means of in-depth interviews with staff and students in the Engineering Faculty and focus group interviews with 1st and 2nd year Engineering students who have completed the academic development programme. The responses of the Engineering lecturers are compared to those of the Academic Development Practitioners, and the 1st year Engineering students’ responses are compared to those of the 2nd years. Data analysis is carried out using thematic content analysis in order to reflect on the particular ways in which the participants construct their understanding of the academic development classes at the Tshwane University of Technology. The results of the interviews with lecturers, Academic Development Practitioners, and 1st and 2nd year Engineering students indicate that there are problems regarding the structure, curriculum and non-accreditation of academic development at the Tshwane University of Technology.
