Enhancing land use planning in Kuala Lumpur through the interaction of formal and informal spatial representationsAbdul Samad, Dazilah January 2017 (has links)
The Southeast Asian region, as any other regions in the world, has experienced significant impact of globalisation for the past few decades. This development scenario is evident in Southeast Asian mega cities such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok and Manila. Kuala Lumpur in particular has developed into a center of economic growth activities for its Klang Valley and the country. The development of Kuala Lumpur has the pattern of a definite concentration of physical and economic activities in the center with ribbon development happening along the major arterials leading into the city. Development control is very important for Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan, especially in the Commercial Central Area. The existence of a good formal spatial representation such as land use map will enhance the development process in Kuala Lumpur. The thesis focuses on the land use planning process and development in Kuala Lumpur. The aim is to improve land use planning in Kuala Lumpur and the image and identity of Kuala Lumpur through the interaction between formal and informal spatial representations. Thus, the first step is to study the existing formal spatial representation implemented in Kuala Lumpur City Hall. The scope and limitation of the GIS system and its customised SKP application is investigated to identify the potential of enhancing its database. The thesis also looks into the informal spatial representation in Kuala Lumpur. Kampung Baru and Jalan TAR shopping district were identified as the appropriate cases study in investigating the land use planning related issues, informal spatial representation available and public perception in relation to land use planning. The investigation was carried out through observation and random interview using survey questionnaire. Findings from the investigations in Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the two case study areas are compiled to form the basis of integration of the formal and informal spatial representations. Recommendations are then put forward for the possibility of integrating both types of spatial representation in one database.

Změny ve vývoji lesní a mimolesní dřevinné vegetace v krajině - případová studie (bývalé panství Děčín) / Changes in the development of forest and non-forest woody vegetation at the landscape level - case study (the former estate of Decin)Čermáková, Eva January 2016 (has links)
This masters thesis deals with the longterm changes of forest and nonforest woody vegetation in the area of the former Děčín estate. For my analysis I have used the avalaible historical maps and modern ortophotographs, which I have processed using the ArcGIS software.
While many places of the Earth are going through deforesation, on the other hand in Europe there is a significant rise in the area covered by woodlands. I have come to the same results in my thesis, in which at the studied site, in which there was an expansion of forest woody vegetation between the years 1953 and 2015. While when comparing the map of The Stabile cadaster and an aerial image from 1953 there was a decrease of forest woody vegetation. These results pary correlate with the demographic development of the Děčín district as well as general political and economic development of the area in the analyzed time period. The results are compared to similar avalaible studies, on the base of which it seems that the resukts of this study are not a unique trend.

The Use of Geographic Information Systems by Law Enforcement Agencies and Its Impact on Police PerformanceUlvi, Kun 04 February 2014 (has links)
Do we know whether the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in law enforcement agencies increases police performance? This study examines the impact of GIS use to police performance outcomes in cities and counties of the U.S. between 2000 and 2007. Current research uses computerized mapping conceptualization to operationalize its measurement. Second, the police performance methodological context is used to measure the organizational impact of GIS. Finally, a new theoretical framework, information technology capacity that combines organizational, environmental and managerial factors to explain IT applications, is used to encompass most relevant dimensions of the subject matter. Findings indicate that the use of GIS in police agencies increased sharply between 2003 and 2007. Additionally, the contribution of GIS use on police performance was found to be statistically significant, but in the opposite direction. Overall, results of the present study indicate significant links between crime rate (DV) and independent variables (IV) in law enforcement agencies. IVs are having a professional form of government andfull time specialized crime analysis personnel, police strength, the use of GIS, population, being located in the Northeast and West regions, poverty, having encouraged SARA type projects and a community policing unit.
