Multiple geo-visualisations for the enhanced comprehension of land cover changesChen, Xiaogang January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This research explores multiple geo-visualisations to enhance the comprehension of changing reality. It establishes a cognitive visualisation model as a framework and a multiple visualisation approach for implementation. Multiple visualisations of land cover changes including 2D and 3D, abstract and realistic simulations with static and dynamic components are created and tested through a formal user survey. It is concluded that although the real world cannot be perfectly represented, comprehension and interpretation can be improved and enhanced by providing effective multiple visualisations in accordance with users’ specific needs and tasks.

Leveraging User Testing to Address Learnability Issues for Teachers Using ASSISTmentsBodah, Joshua 19 April 2013 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to demonstrate how user testing can be used to identify and remediate learnability issues of a web application. Experimentation revolved around ASSISTments (www.assistments.org), an intelligent tutoring web application in which teachers create virtual classrooms where they can assign problem sets to their students and gain valuable data which can be used to make informed decisions. Recent log analysis uncovered very low task completion rates for new users on tasks that were intended to be trivial. Suspecting that this could be due to poor user interface design, user tests were conducted to help identify usability problems. Sessions were analyzed, and changes were made between each user test to address issues found. Feedback from user testing led to the implementation of an embedded support system. This support system consisted of a splash page which gave an overview of how the system should be used and a collection of context-sensitive tooltips which tried to give the user instructions on what to do as well as explain various parts of the interface. A randomized control trial was performed to measure the effectiveness of the embedded support. 69 participants were shown one of two interfaces: one with embedded support and one without. Task completion rates were analyzed for each of the groups. We found that the support system was able to influence which links a user clicked. However, although the support system was intended to address poor task completion rates, users in the conditions had similar task completion rates regardless of whether the support system was enabled.

Optimised patient information materials and recruitment to a study of behavioural activation in older adults: an embedded study within a trialKnapp, P., Gilbody, S., Holt, J., Keding, A., Mitchell, N., Raynor, D.K., Silcock, Jonathan, Torgerson, D. 01 September 2020 (has links)
Yes / Printed participant information about randomised controlled trials is often long, technical and difficult to navigate. Improving information materials is possible through optimisation and user-testing, and may impact on participant understanding and rates of recruitment. Methods: A study within a trial (SWAT) was undertaken within the CASPER trial. Potential CASPER participants were randomised to receive either the standard trial information or revised information that had been optimised through information design and user testing. Results: A total of 11,531 patients were randomised in the SWAT. Rates of recruitment to the CASPER trial were 2.0% in the optimised information group and 1.9% in the standard information group (odds ratio 1.027; 95% CI 0.79 to 1.33; p=0.202). Conclusions: Participant information that had been optimised through information design and user testing did not result in any change to rate of recruitment to the host trial. Registration: ISRCTN ID ISRCTN02202951; registered on 3 June 2009. / UK National Institute of Health Research Health Technology Assessment Programme (project number 08/19/04) / This article is included in the Studies Within A Trial (SWAT) collection (https://f1000research.com/collections/swat)
