Almost all social services offices in Sweden have been or are currently in the process of implementing a manual-based method by the name of ’Individens behov i centrum’ (IBIC). It roughly translates to ‘the individuals needs in focus’ and is a method that helps social workers define an individual’s closest support network through the clients (family of origin?). In using this method important individuals in the client’s network who could potentially function as protective factors risk being overlooked, such as chosen families which are most common amongst queer people (the queer community?). The aim of this study was to explore and contribute to the knowledge of queer social situations but more specifically to explore the concept of chosen families or community and queer attitudes in relation to social services. The method that was used for this study was four qualitative interviews with queer individuals who have prior experience of social services and treatment. The results were analyzed by using the theories of resilience and sense of coherence to illustrate the salutogenic aspects of the chosen family. This study found that there was a dissonance between the social services definition of the concept of family in relation to the concept of chosen family. This dissonance and lack of knowledge on the part of social services workers can be interpreted by queer clients as a lack of interest which risks creating a distance and hindering cooperation between social workers and their queer clients. This study attempts to nuance the understanding of queers and chosen families in a social context. It illustrates and analyses what can happen when social services meet more organic concepts such as queer chosen families and the possible positive and negative consequences (that arise).
