An exploratory study on teacher beliefs in value education in relationto new senior secondary liberal studiesHo, Cheuk-pun., 何卓彬. January 2011 (has links)
This research investigated the teacher beliefs and the important aspects of value education in relation to the New Senior Secondary Liberal Studies (NSS LS) curriculum in Hong Kong. The NSS LS curriculum was first introduced to schools in the academic year 20092010. It emphasises the cultivation of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Therefore, it is suggested that value education should be an important element in this new core senior secondary curriculum. The focus of this study is to explore the beliefs which are held by the NSS LS teachers in value education and to identify the important aspects of value education in practice accordingly.
The findings suggested that value education in relation to NSS LS is a common concern of teachers, and it is expressed as two themes: ‘moral standard’ and ‘critical thinking’. It was found that if ‘moral standard’ is the focal concern for teachers, ‘value instruction’ may become the main teaching strategy and ‘biased selection of experience’ may inform pedagogy. On the contrary, if ‘critical thinking’ is the focal concern for teachers, ‘value clarification’ and ‘providing alternatives for students to experience’ may become the main melodies in their teaching. In addition, ‘programmability’ and ‘role of emotions’ are the important aspects in which NSS LS teachers differ in their views of value education.
Based on the analysis and findings of this qualitative study, some implications for future research are discussed. It is hoped that this study may provide some insights for those educationalists who are interested in this area of study. / published_or_final_version / Education / Master / Master of Education

Affecting Children's Value Claims by Using High-Level Questioning Focused on Selected PoetrySheppard, Ronnie L. 08 1900 (has links)
This study was to determine the extent to which the use of high-level questioning, through eliciting responses to selected poems, affects children's value claims. Twenty-seven seventh-grade boys comprised the control group, and twenty-seven eighth-grade boys comprised the experimental group. The experimental group took part in values-clarification experiences for sixteen weeks. The control group received no value instruction. The Values Inventory was administered to both groups at the beginning and at the end of the sixteen weeks. Testing of the hypotheses resulted in eight of the hypotheses being significant at the .01 level, indicating that values-clarification experiences using high-level questioning and selected poems did affect children's value claims.

Work values and attitudes instruction as viewed by secondary trade and industrial education teachersGregson, James Aaron 28 July 2008 (has links)
The literature suggests that work values and attitudes are just as important, if not more so, than cognitive and psychomotor skills. However, there is little data in the literature which actually describes the work values and attitudes that trade and industrial instructors teach and the pedagogical techniques they employ to teach them.
The primary objectives of this study were to identify the work values and attitudes that trade and industrial instructors teach and to describe the pedagogical techniques they use to teach these skills. Another objective of this study was to deter mine whether work values and attitudes are taught incidentally with cognitive and psychomotor skills, or via targeted learning activities.
This study utilized the face-to-face interview technique to collect data. The sample for this study was composed of 5O secondary trade and industrial instructors who were nominated by their administrators as successful in teaching work values and attitudes. Because of the qualitative nature of this study, the analysis explored relationships between the specific occupational area of trade and industrial instructors and the work: values and attitudes they reported teaching. In addition, relationships were explored between the occupational area of the instructors and the pedagogical techniques they employed to teach the work values and attitudes. During analysis, examples and behavioral events provided by the instructors were examined.
The major conclusions of this study were: (1) Instructors directly and indirectly teach numerous types of work: values and attitudes to their students. However, the most emphasized work values and attitude clusters were Ambitious, Cooperative/Helpful, Accurate/Quality of Work, Dependable/ Reliable/Responsible, and Dedicated/Devoted/Honest/ Loyal/Conscientious. (2) Instructors teach work: values and attitudes that have been identified in the literature as most important. Though it became evident that instructors emphasized some work values and attitudes more than others, all the identified work values and attitudes have been recognized in the literature as important. (3) The instructors reported using several different pedagogical strategies to teach work values and attitudes. The most frequently identified pedagogical strategies were: reward structure, group discussion, one on one counseling, role modeling, and role playing. (4) The majority of these secondary trade and industrial instructors taught work values and attitudes incidentally with cognitive and psychomotor skills. (5) These secondary trade and industrial instructors used both democratic and indoctrinational pedagogical techniques extensively to teach work values and attitudes. / Ed. D.

Educating adolescents towards spiritual intelligenceFerreira, Cheryl 06 1900 (has links)
A critical evaluation of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) was undertaken to uncover strategies for infusing values across the curricula – values that may facilitate the development of spiritual intelligence (SQ) in adolescents. A literature study was conducted to determine whether SQ may be harnessed to cultivate values within an educational context. In addition, moral and spiritual development in adolescence was explored and a case made for values-education. An empirical investigation was undertaken using both a qualitative research design and semi-structured interviews. A purposive sample was used comprising 14 education specialists, principals and Life Orientation teachers from six secondary schools in Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces. The most important finding was the fact that values-education in the NCS was problematic. The conclusion was thus drawn that teachers should be trained to incorporate values within curriculum activities − values that could engender SQ and, thus, address the moral dilemmas in our schools. / Psychology of Education / M.
