When Values Collide: Perceptions of Ethical Social Work in Neoliberal Contexts

Bouma, Chad 20 November 2015 (has links)
Critical literature on social work ethics and practice in the current neoliberal context identifies the complex tensions generated for practitioners by the restructuring of increasingly residual public programs and by the market-modelled organizations in which they work. Pressed by employing organizations’ expectations to narrow and standardize their practice, social workers face collisions between their own values and the managerial and budget-driven requirements that dominate their organizational worlds. Building on the growing body of literature in this area, the research reported here examined how social workers articulate their own values and ethical commitments, understand the value collisions they experience, and work to navigate them in the interest of those they seek to serve. A small qualitative study was conducted to explore these questions. In semi-structured interviews, five social workers were invited to share their experiences of ethical tensions generated in their organizational settings. The members of the sample all held social work degrees; their ages and length of practice experience ranged considerably and they spoke from experiences in a wide array of service sectors and settings. Analysis of participants’ experiences illuminated the texture of their struggles and their efforts to covertly and overtly challenge or evade organizational requirements that were at odds with their values and their conceptualizations of good practice. Their accounts point to the importance of politicized understandings of social work ethics. They also suggest the importance for social work education and professional development programs to foster dialogue on the complexities of ethical action and support the development of the analytical and practical skills that enable practitioners to find the ‘cracks’ in dominant neoliberal structures and create spaces for change. / Thesis / Master of Social Work (MSW)

Sociální práce v kontextu hodnot se zaměřením na matky s dětmi bez domova / Social work in the context of values, with a focus on homeless mothers and children

KRÝCHOVÁ, Vlasta January 2014 (has links)
The study focuses on social work as work with values. In the theoretical part defines the concept of value. Values are later described in social work, families and shelters for mothers with children. As part of the research the values of shelters for mothers and children and the value of users of these facilities are then compared to each other, to what extent are the same or different. The research was conducted in three shelters for mothers with children through interviews. By document analysis the values of shelters on the quality standards of social services were measured. The questions used in the interviews are divided into several areas: family relationships, the relationship of mother and education and work in childhood and adulthood, the relationship of a mother to her children, their education and future occupation, partner relationships and additional questions. These areas should point out what is important to mothers and children. Using this information is possible to compare the values and social workers in shelters that social workers can be incorporated into the concept of the social services.

Etické a psychologické aspekty internetového poradenství / Ethical and psychological aspects of online counseling services

CHOCHOLOVÁ, Lucie January 2014 (has links)
This thesis aims to introduce the basic problems of social status and internet consulting services to the reader. Here the service is seen in the ethical and psychological context because an internet counselor cannot do without these points of view when he tries to provide a customer service in the highest possible quality. I focus on the e-mail form of providing online advice as it is the most commonly used type of e-communication between a client and an advisor. Psychological and ethical determinants of the whole process are complementary, intersect, there are no single boundaries between them, whether from the point of view of ethics they are values on which to build human rights or the Code of Ethics for social workers, hence iKodex valid for social services in the online environment or from psychology perspective it is a virtual communication process between a counselor and a client, in which the art of communication, the changing identity of a man, manifested aggression, transference and countertransference and the actual on-line environment play role. The aim is to highlight the complex and ambiguous status of online counseling services.
