Previous issue date: 2009-03-17 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas - FAPEAM / Second growth, even when substantially different from the original forests in terms of
floristics, plays important ecological functions, restoring some of the most important benefits to the
system. This study aimed to determine the effects of differences in vegetation cover on the
nutritional quality of litter and soil and recycling of nutrients. so samples were taken from soil,
newly fallen litter and the litter-layer accumulated on the ground, in the PDBFF in BR 174, about
80 km north of Manaus. Three plots were sampled for each of the types of vegetation considered:
ongoing pasture active, post-pasture second growth, post-harvest second growth, post-seringa
second growth and primary forest. It was found that although the soil under pastures has higher
concentrations of active organic matter and nutrients (K, Ca and Mg), the very low input of
nutrients, especially nitrogen and basic cations provided by the litterfall into the system is leading it
to the nutrient exhaustion in a short term period. In general and for the variable under study, the
second growth vegetations in this study, all with more than 17 years of regeneration, are in such an
advanced stage of secondary succession that masked any influences that either type of system or
management might have had in the past. By the level of their recovery and function it was shown
that those second growth surrounding the forest fragments are providing an important
environmental service not only to recover biomass plant, restructuring the forest landscape and
important ecological functions, but also in the recovery of the recycling of nutrients in soil
including fixing carbon.

Previous issue date: 2008-12-10 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas - FAPEAM / The high primary productivity of secondary vegetation (capoeira) and the
large extent and continued presence of this land cover in the agricultural
landscape of Amazonia indicate the capacity of this vegetation to absorb
substantial amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. In order to calculate
these flows and stocks of carbon and to remunerate the environmental
services of secondary vegetation, indirect models of biomass estimation are
needed that are adapted to the range of sucessional conditions in each
region. We investigated the effects of different forms of land use among rural
settlers on aboveground biomass estimates and the chronological progression
of biomass accumulation in abandoned pastures in small rural properties in
the Tarumã Mirim settlement near the city of Manaus in Central Amazonia.
We developed mathematical models using total height and diameter at breast
height of all plants and indices related to the use history of the land to
estimate plant biomass in 24 plots used by rural settlers. Biomass data were
obtained using destructive sampling of all plants with diameter at breast
height > 1 cm in secondary vegetation ranging from 1 to 15 years of age that
had been used as pasture and agriculture. With these data we developed
monospecífic allometric equations for 13 species and multispecífic equations
for a group of 121 species of trees, for a group of 12 species of bushes and
for dead plants that remain standing. We also developed indirect
methodologies of estimate biomass stocks in capoeiras through less-difficult nondestructive methods. The rate and the accumulation of biomass from the
3rd to the 21st year of age of secondary vegetation established in degraded
pastures were indirectly appraised using the allometric equations we
developed. A continuous inventory of the degraded pastures was carried out
annually in permanent plots in capoeiras with three different use intensities.
Both the amount of accumulated biomass and the florístic richness in
abandoned pastures are higher when the areas had been subjected to less
time under grazing. The biomass stock is determined more by the intensity of
previous use than by the age of the capoeira. Along course of succession the
rates of biomass accumulation are not linear, there being a high degree of
interannual variation, with stagnation and even biomass loss in the secondary
vegetation plots during years with severe droughts. Variation of capoeira
management practices by settlers with different profiles also affected the
biomass accumulation. Settlers who were living in cities prior to moving to the
rural area showed poor knowledge of capoeira management practices and
burned the capoeira too early (< 2 years of fallow time). At this age the
capoeira has not produced enough biomass to increase soil fertility and to
maintain it over the long term. These urban-originated settlers do not
associate the practice of fallowing with the recovery of soil fertility through
natural regeneration. This study contributes to the understanding of biological
and social factors that determine sucessional processes in the agricultural
landscape of central Amazonia.
agroflorestais e, principalmente, o desmatamento evitado, a comercialização

Evaluated the development of the acai palm monthly (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) planted
in secondary forest, in the period of March to December of 2005. The study were
conduced in a capoeira of 50 x 50m2 in Benjamin Constant Community, Municipality of
Bragança State of Pará. Planted 532 seedlings with spacing of 2m among plants that
were identified and numbered with plastic labels. They were appraised the survival and
mortality, growth in diameter and length of the stem, number of functional leaves and
don't functional, attack in the leavers and analysis of the soil of the area. The largest
survival (87,21%) was period of larger precipitation and smaller temperature and the
largest mortality (96,61%) was period of smaller precipitation and larger temperature.
The growth in diameter, length of the stem and production of leaves it growing in the
period of larger precipitation and smaller temperature, however, with decrease of the
precipitation and increase of the temperature the diameters reduced, the length was
slower and the loss of leaves it increased. The attack of leaves was superior to 80%,
caused by grasshoppers, caterpillars and rabbits. The chemical analysis of the soil
showed that the low fertility influenced in the vegetative growth. The high mortality, the
decrease of the diameter, the smallest growth in length of the stem and the loss to leaves
they were consequences of the smallest readiness water in the period of smaller
precipitation and larger temperature and of the low fertility of the soil / Avaliou-se o desenvolvimento do açaizeiro (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) plantado em
predação e análise do solo.
A analise química do solo
mostrou que a baixa fertilidade influenciou no crescimento vegetativo. A alta

Previous issue date: 2008-08-12 / CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this study was to evaluate the non-timber plant species with economic potential in
barns, land of 15 to 30 years in three traditional communities of RDS Piagaçu Purus. The
search arose from a need to know the potential non-timber in secondary vegetation in the
Central Amazon. In areas of the Reserve located in the Amazon - Brazil, were established
twelve plots (100x20 m) for sampling of individuals, DAP> 10 cm, each of the parcels were
subdivided into five parts (20x20 meters), within each sub-plot, was established a parcel of
5x5 m for counting the species with DAP <5 cm. 1,182 individuals were recorded in the
lifting of DAP and 981 individuals with higher DAP minor. The families most representative
regarding diversity were Moraceae (18 spp.), Fabaceae (16 spp.) and Annonaceae (15 spp.),
These barns are dominated by species of the genus Miconia DAP greater than or equal to 10
cm and Astrocaryum DAP less than or equal to 5 cm. In the density of seedlings and adults,
seven species were the most abundant species. The survey was conducted from inventory,
personal interviews for the residents of three communities and informal conversations. This
analysis considered the potential for generating income of the forest, using non-timber
products of greatest interest, and the generation of income of families. We need investments
of the company targeted to ensure the maintenance of families in rural areas so that they do
not alone with the costs of conservation of forest ecosystems. The methodology could be
replicated in other units of conservation in the state of Amazonas and the Amazon as a whole / O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar as espécies vegetais não-madeireiras com potencial econômico em capoeiras de terra firme de 15 e 30 anos em três comunidades tradicionais da RDS Piagaçu Purus.

The Amazon rainforest is the main remnant of tropical rainforest in the world, its contributions to the environmental balance are threatened by the progressive deforestation, however. The main inductors of recent deforestation are the economic growth and the agricultural frontier expansion in the region. Other determining factors of deforestation include expanding livestock, the expansion of mechanized annual agriculture, wood extraction, infrastructure investments, and fiscal incentives. Until 2004, the Amazon biome underwent an accelerated process of deforestation. Although, in the same year, the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Legal Amazon Deforestation (PPCDAm) was implemented, its effects caused a drastic reduction in deforestation rates. This plan has actions articulated in three thematic axes: land ordering, environmental monitoring and control, and finally, promotion of sustainable productive activities. In addition to the decline in deforestation, it is observed that since the implementation of the PPCDAm, the forest regeneration area, with secondary vegetation, has been expanding quickly in the Amazon biome. In the period from 2004 to 2014, secondary vegetation was the land use that expanded the most in the Amazon biome, nearly 49% of the increase in the total land use area in that period, resulting from the increase in secondary vegetation area. In this context, the present work had the objective of analyzing the dynamics of changes in land use and determining whether environmental policies and socioeconomic constraints are influencing the proportion of secondary vegetation area in the Amazon biome. This study is based on the theory of Forest Transition and the process of changes in land use, considering that the forest transition is a long-term phenomenon, in which the decline of primary forest area is accompanied by forest regeneration. The economic model used considers that the economic agents make the decision on the allocation of the land from its value in use. However, the process of land use change and forest transition may suffer interference from market failures, policies, and institutional factors. Analytically, self-regressive vector models with panel data (PVAR) were used in order to identify the pattern of changes in land use and to make future projections of land use. Moreover, panel data models were used to determine the effect of environmental policies and socioeconomic constraints on the proportion of secondary vegetation in the Amazon biome. The results of land uses up to 2050 indicate that pasture will continue to be the main land use. In addition, areas of secondary vegetation will continue to expand in the biome indicating that the deforested primary forest in long term tends to regenerate. Agricultural areas also showed a tendency to increase. Specifically, in relation to the area of secondary vegetation, it is verified that the agricultural and extractivism prices are important determinants of the forest regeneration of the Amazon biome. Furthermore, it can be seen that public policies to combat illegal deforestation through the application of fines have favored an increase in the area of forest regeneration. However, the policy of subsidized rural credit granting favors agricultural expansion over secondary vegetation areas.
