Effects of imposed visuals and instructions to image on immediate recall in students of varying ages and cognitive styles

James, Jane Whitlock January 1989 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to determine if levels of field dependence affects a student’s ability to profit from either imposed visuals or instructions to form visual images to aid immediate recall of concrete paired-axociate nouns. Also of interest are possible changes in the relationship between field dependence and visual strategy as students move from upper elementary to high school. It was hypothesized that the field-dependent individual is less able to profit from the use of interactive imagery required in a memory task of this nature due to the inability to impose structure in a non-structured situation. Participants in this study were 197 fourth, seventh and tenth grade students from a moderately affluent, suburban community in southwestern Virginia. The Group Embedded Figures Test was used to determine cognitive style. Within each grade level, an equal number of students classified as field dependent, neutral and field independent were randomly assigned to three treatment groups. The dependent measure of memory was a written test of immediate recall of 24 paired-associate, concrete nouns. The three treatment groups were: Control, who received only instructions to remember the words; Imposed Visual, who viewed line drawings of the two words; and Imagery, who received instructions to form interactive visual images of the two words. Data was analyzed using three-way Analysis ofVariance. All three main effects (grade level, cognitive style and visual strategy) were significant. There was no interaction, however. / Ed. D.

The Effects of a Short-Term Videotape Training Program for Guides Conducting Older Adults on Tours in Public Spaces

Wolens, Sylvia E. (Sylvia Elaine) 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was a test of a specific videotape designed to influence the actions of tour guides for older adult groups. The purposes of the study were to observe guide performances and older adult responses before and after training in techniques for sharing information with older adults in public spaces. The hypotheses were tested. 1) Guides after training would exhibit significant differences in behaviors of pointing, repeating, pausing, questioning, conversing, facing art when talking, talking inaudibly, pacing rapidly. 2) Older adult drop-outs would decrease on tours with especially trained guides.

Public Safety, D/FW Style: Production of an Informational Videotape

Holland, Marvin Glyn 08 1900 (has links)
This study consists of two parts, the completed videotape production and the production book. The videotape explores the history, organizational structure, and training requirements of the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport Department of Public Safety. A copy of the videotape is shelved in the North Texas State University Media Center Library. The production book describes background preproduction, production, and postproduction of the videotape. Problems, their effects, and solutions are described. The study concludes that an effective videotape can be produced in-house with limited time, equipment, and personnel, at a cost far less than commercially produced films. The study makes specific recommendations for guidelines and planning of future productions.

Using music therapy and visuals to facilitate language in exceptional preschoolers

Albert, Kimberly Joy 01 January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this project is to explore the effectiveness of combining music and visual supports as a means of facilitating communication in exceptional preschoolers. The results indicate that music and visual supports have some merit for increasing verbal responses.

A model for effective use of video materials to develop listening comprehension of Japanese learners of English

Takahashi, Hiroshi, 1937- 15 January 1993 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop and test a model in which video materials are effectively used to develop students' listening communication ability. In order to reach this goal, the researcher designed the study procedure. In phase one, literature was reviewed to establish the theoretical framework for the model. In phase two, the validity of the model was tested using the Delphi technique. In phase three, the model Was field tested in two high schools in Japan with 251 11th grade students and 3 Japanese teachers of English participating. In addition, there were 12 teacher observers. Two sets of data, one from the student questionnaire and one from teacher questionnaire, were collected and analyzed along with the researcher's observations. The lesson, based on the model, was well-received by the students and teachers. Almost 80% of the 249 students responding to a 5-point Likert scale question rated the lesson as excellent or very good. Among 15 teachers, 12 rated the lesson as excellent and 3 rated it very good. To an open-ended question to the students, "What was the part you liked best in today's lesson?", 108 students responded "the use of movie/video materials." Teachers were also favorable toward the use of video as a teaching material. Both the students and teachers responded that they thought learners would improve their listening comprehension through this type of lesson. Based on the findings from this study, the researcher has concluded that this model can be utilized in the classroom and will improve listening comprehension of Japanese learners of English. Even though this type of lesson can be taught by any teacher of English in Japan regardless of his/her English language skill, it can be implemented more effectively if teachers are appropriately trained. Therefore, a three-phase workshop for teachers was recommended. / Graduation date: 1993

The use of visual imagery and reflective writing as a measure of social work students' capstone experience

Orton, Dianne J. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DPhil (Social Work))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / Traditional means for social work students to share their capstone field work experiences in the academic setting have primarily focused on articulating this experience using verbal skills, reports and other forms of written documentation. The ability of students to explain the nuances of agency environments, clientele, the acquisition and demonstration of transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, organizing and planning skills and critical thinking abilities in a descriptively rich fashion is quite limited. The aim of the study is to determine the perceived meaning, and significance of students’ photographed artifacts. This qualitative study incorporated an exploratory design using visual imagery, reflective writing techniques and photo-elicitation interviews. This process provided students the opportunity to illustrate the depth and breath of their capstone field work experiences. The study resulted in 110 participant-produced photographs taken in three domains: At the agency, Outside the agency and Personal. Six overarching themes developed from the analyzed data: (1) safety, (2) environment and atmosphere, (3) transportation, (4) frustration and stress, (5) inspiration, coping and hope and (6) transferable skills. The findings reflect the unique perspective of students’ capstone field work experience that can be shared with social work students, educators, and practitioners.

Adult education on public television : an historic overview of the 1986-87 GED-On-TV Pilot Project in East Central Indiana

Robertson, Molly K. January 1988 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the GED-ON-TV project operated by Muncie Community Schools in 1986-87, and to look at the effect of the program on under-educated adults in east central Indiana. The study also offered recommendations for improving the operation of the GED-ON-TV project for use by other adult education providers throughout Indiana and the country.GED-ON-TV began to broadcast a series of 43 television in Muncie, Indiana, in November, 1986. The programs were designed by Kentucky Educational Television specifically for adult high school drop-outs who wished to prepare to take the General Educational Development (GED) Tests, and earn a high school equivalency credential. The series featured programs on reading, social studies, science, writing and math. The target population for the series was the 41,150 drop-outs in the six east central Indiana counties, who received the WIPB-TV signal, and who left high school somewhere between theprocedures used ninth and eleventh grade. The counties participating in the project were Blackford, Delaware, Henry, Jay, Madison and Randolph.A massive advertising campaign was launched to recruit students from throughout the area. The promotional campaign resulted in 994 inquiries to an "800" telephone number. Of these, 498 students enrolled in the program. At the end of the series, 157 adults took the GED Tests and 134 passed and received a high school equivalency certificate. The project surveyed all students who enrolled in the program and learned that over 58 per cent claimed that the learn-at-home series was the first contact they had had with any adult education program. This study explains in detail the operating by the project and offers 11 specific recommendations for improvement of the project that may be used by other adult education providers wanting to begin a GED-ON-TV program. / Department of Telecommunications
